Enjoy pickup from your Reykjavik hotel at the recommended 8:30 a.m. departure time, or arrange an alternative time if you wish. Be sure to bring warm clothes, sturdy shoes, and a camera.
Then, journey southward in your private, air-conditioned, and admire Iceland’s landscapes as you follow Highway I through the Hveragerði and Selfoss regions.
Let your guide know if there’s anything you want to see more or less of. There are many places to visit, and as your tour is private, your guide can tailor the itinerary to include the sights and activities that interest you most. Your tour will also include a break for lunch at a local restaurant or café (own expense).
Stop first at the base of Eyjafjallajökull, the volcano that last erupted in 2010. View the massive peak, and then stop for photos at the Seljalandsfoss waterfall, one of Iceland’s most beautiful waterfalls.
Depending on the weather, stop at lesser-known falls, such as Nauthúsagil and Gljúfrabúi. Make other stops at sites like the 40-year-old DC-3 airplane wreck at Sólheimasandur.
View the fairy tale-like Skóagoss waterfall, and if conditions allow, visit the Sólheimajökull glacier, a massive tongue of glacial ice extending from the Mýrdalsjökull glacier. Walk to the glacier edge to scan the ice formations, crevasses, and ridges, and opt to take a walk on the ice with assistance from a local guide.
Lastly, trace the southern coastline to admire its raw beauty and black-sand beaches. See the rock arch promontory at Dyrhólaey, sandwiched between dark sand bays, and with luck, spot some of the puffins that make their home in the cliffs.
Afterward, return to Reykjavik where your day trip concludes with a hotel drop-off.
