It's quite a hike to get to the Volcano, but well worth it.

Absolutely amazing. I was so excited for this excursion and it did not disappoint. I was always interested in rocks and volcanos as a child, so this was very special to me. The guides were excellent and safety was the top priority. The soup at base camp when we got out of the volcano was delicious

This is definitely a once in a lifetime experience! My boyfriend and I went on this excursion in mid-August. Our tour guides were Harpa and Nina. Nina joined us down in the volcano. She shared information about the volcano and was more than willing to take countless pictures for everyone in our group using our own phones/cameras!
Our group consisted of 7 people. After being picked up from our pick up location in the morning, we then transferred to another van. It was approximately a 30 minute drive to the destination. There we were able to use the restrooms and get some water before starting our 2 mile hike. The hike takes approximately 45 minutes to complete and was not too bad, there was a pathway to walk along. Once we reached the volcano, there was a house next to it. There we were again able to use the restrooms and have water, tea, and coffee. We were able to leave any bags we had with us in the house so we did not have to carry them with us into the volcano. After putting on the harnesses and helmets we were ready to descend into the volcano! Being inside the volcano was truly an amazing and memorable experience. Looking back at the pictures we took, it is hard to believe they are even real and that we were there! We got to spend about 40 minutes inside the volcano, walking around and taking pictures. Afterward, we went back into the house and had some soup. We did not get any sweets, but it is mentioned in the tour description that it is not a definite. There are also souvenirs available for purchase here. The prices are very reasonable, as compared to everything else being super expensive in Iceland. We bought two souvenir shirts which came out to be approximately 20 USD each. They also had other clothing items such as hats and fleeces as well as chocolate bars and books about the volcano. During our hike back our guides stopped at a small cave and let us quickly go inside and take some pictures.

This was an excellent experience, unforgettable. The majestic colors of the magma chamber are like no others. The walk to the volcano was extremely long and the pace was quite brisk. Not fun :-. The equipment harness, bandana, helmet was appropriate. The safety of the workers was exceptional. The soup that we enjoyed after our 30 minutes in the volcano, homemade by the guides, was amazing - delicious and hot.

I cannot say enough about this adventure. We were picked up at noon and returned to our hotel around 5 p.m. Once we arrived at the end point for bus travel, we were decked out in long yellow raincoats as it was pouring rain and set off with our guide for a 2-mile trek through a lava field to a hut close to the entry into the volcano. There, we were given coffee or tea and hard hats and fitted with harnesses. After a short hike to the entry site, we boarded the lift that descends into the volcano. It is a LONG way down. The view is amazing downward, upward and all around. Once at the bottom, we exited the lift and listened to a guide describe what we were seeing. We were free to walk around for about 25 minutes before we ascended in the lift. The walk is hazardousthe lights on our hardhats were very helpful in locating the exact spot to put one's foot. There are no handrails to hold on for support. Upon exiting the lift at the surface, we returned to the hut where we were offered hot soup and coffee or tea. WC facilities are available. After our rest, we were off for the 2-mile hike back to the bus and our return to the hotel. This is the only place on earth, they claim, where one can descend like this into a volcano. Despite the drenching rain and the long hike, this adventure will be what we remember most from our 10-days in Iceland.

What an amazing experience! I was so nervous about doing this but the walk to the volcano was pretty easy and the descent was not at all scary! I would do this again in a heartbeat!

Worth every cent. The guides where very patient with me as I walked slower than the rest of the group. I chose a pick up and return to hotel tour Descent into Thrihnukagigur Volcano and Hike which I booked via Viator prior to leaving my home country. The tour only operates 15th May to 30th September and is an all day adventure. I was picked up from my Reykjavik hotel at 9.30am and transported to the bus depot where you are connected with another bus to take you to base camp. Once at base camp you are fitted out if you wish with rain coat and pants .It is then off to the volcano about a 40min level but sometimes rocky hike. There is a defined trail to follow a guide will be in front as well as a guide at the back of the pack. On route the lead guide that I had was pointing out things of interest like the fault in the earths crust that you actually walk across via a bridge and can see. Upon arrival at the hut you are offered soup tea coffee etc after which you are outfitted with helmet and safety harness and off up the hill to the entrance of the volcano. Once at the top a window cleaners cage awaits you. You are hooked up and lowered inside the volcano. Hold your breath and be ready to be surprised but remember to take those photos. After being lowered to the bottom and you exit the cage you are instructed where you can and cannot go. There is a path of sorts marked with red top painted sticks seems to be how things are marked and guided through Iceland one side goes 30 metres to the bottom and one goes 80 metres to the bottom but both go in a circuit and you end back where you started. You are given about an hour to explore alone. Be warned very very rocky and only your headlamp and internal lighting to guide you. After marvelling at the fact that you are inside a volcano and nothing like Jules Verne Journey to the Centre of the Earth and observing all the colours and majestic of it all it is time to ascend the volcano. So strapped up again and this time up yo

It is the correct use of the word 'AWESOME'. Amazing trip and worth every Krona. Great guides and felt super safe with our Mountain Rescue guide who worked the Elevator that takes you down. Ragga was a great guide too. Loved the walk in and out to the Three Peaks. AND the ladies in Basecamp make a magnificent soup. As they say - just DO IT

Really worth doing. Although pace was quite quick given the very wet and windy conditions, the terrain was quite flat although rocky and steep/slippery in some places. Overall I would highly recommend doing this tour.

This attraction is essential for any tour of Iceland. In a country not known for its warmth - interpersonal or climatic - the staff of the tour enhanced the powerful experience. The 2 mile walk to the volcano was paced to make all participants comfortable and the charming guide kept it interesting. And the trip into the volcano is all once could ask for a tourist attraction.

Great tour - my husband and I loved it, but BE ON TIME. The pick up instructions were a little vague and we missed our pick up by 1 minute they won't wait. Fortunately they had extra room in a later tour usually they are all booked solid. Be ready 30 minutes prior to your tour start time e.g. for an 8 am tour be in your hotel lobby by 7:30 at the latest.

The volcano was fabulous, but the 2 mile hike could have been not a near run for someone a bit over 5 ft 3 in tall. Our guide was about 6 ft 4 in, and was way ahead of me, and I am a good walker. I was out of breath trying to keep up! No time to look up, trying to not trip on rocks at a near run.
