What You Can Expect

South Iceland Tour from Reykjavik: Waterfalls, Volcanoes and Glaciers

Walk behind the water of Seljandsfoss Waterfall

After morning pickup from your central Reykjavik hotel, relax into your air-conditioned vehicle and journey toward Iceland’s spectacular south coast.

On route, admire the barren but beautiful scenery as your guide shed lights on the geological forces that have sculpted Iceland’s extraordinary volcanic landscapes.

Bring some food and drinks for lunch, or if you wish, use a stop on route to buy snacks (own expense). You’ll get a break to enjoy your lunch around midway through your tour.

Drive through fertile farmlands and typical Icelandic villages and listen to tales of their rich Viking history and heritage. Stop at the spectacular Seljalandsfoss waterfall, and snap photos of its rushing waters as they plunge from a former sea cliff. If you wish, take a walk along the path behind the fall to enjoy close-up views of the curtain of water.

Catch glimpses of the Eyjafjallajökull and Hekla volcanoes (depending on the weather), and stop to see the Sólheimajökull glacier. Marvel at this rugged tongue of ice, a raw finger of ancient frozen water characterized by jagged ridges, sinkholes and other ice formations.

Look for the Westman Islands rising steeply off the coast, and travel to the black beach of Reynisfjara, where black pebbles sit beneath cliffs of pillar-like basalt stacks. Legend has it that the stacks were formed when two mischievous trolls were turned to stone.

Make a stop to see another of Iceland’s picture-postcard waterfalls — Skógafoss. Admire the 196-foot (60-meter) cascade and then relax on your ride back to Reykjavik. Your tour concludes with a hotel drop-off.

A MUST!!!! It was an amazing experience. Walking on the Glaciers and all...especially with the global warming effect to think about. Who knows how long we still have the chance to do that...Just make sure you're fit enough because you need to hike up. An elder couple hiked half way but decided to stay behind because of the steep path that lay ahead. All in all just amazing

Our tour guide Lorenzo was fabulous and very informative. Really interesting day trip. The highlight though was the Glacier walk. It was awesome. We took our two 20 something children with us and we all said it was one of our best ever experiences. Well worthy the money and what was a long but memorable day. Thank you Lorenzo for a fab day.

This is a must do when you are in Iceland. You will experience and see things on this tour that you will never see anywhere else. The glacier hike was the highlight for us. Our guides were terrific and the experience breathtaking. Everything from pick up to drop iff was well organized and we were treated to a day of fun and adventure with our experienced guides.
I want to return and brig my boys with me so they can experience it for themselves...already been back 2 weeks and still sing about it!

This was a great tour! Some suggestions on the poor description online:

1 We only drove past the volcanoes 5KN away, and at no point had intentions on getting closer. I wouldn't include this in the name of the tour but rather keep it as a description in What you can expect.
2 Food is not included, however, there is a rest stop that has coffee/food. As well this is a restaurant at the black sand beach. Do bring cash in the event the c/c machines are down. We had this issue but fortunately stopped at a local Bonus grocer and made our own sandwiches for the trip.
3 The Glacier was AMAZING. Nowhere in the description does it truly explain what you will be doing. This was by far the best part of the trip. You will have the opportunity to put on a pair of crampons, helmet and harness and hike up the glacier with your tour guide.
4 I would recommend bringing snow pants, if you have them, as well as a pair of dry socks. I would also avoid wearing jeans in the event they get wet.

This was one of the best excursions I had ever taken. It was a tour of the southern coast. Our guide, Willy, was great about stopping and giving us information, answering questions, and making suggestions of what to do after the trip was over. He knew the country well and gave some great insight. The glacier hike was beautiful and the waterfall visits were quick but breath taking. A good trip for those that are either alone or in a small group because it was a smaller tour than you might get from other companies. I can't say enough good things about Grey Lines and am looking forward to taking more of their guided tours in the future if I make it back to Iceland.
