WE were dumped from our cruise ship at 8 am just before carnaval , with a day to spend before our late night flight home .Fortunately we had booked a tour to Petropolis to avoid samba madness
Our driver Marcello was delayed by traffic and wasa late picking us up . He was appolgetic and did every thing possible to make sure we had an enjoyable day .He was a skilled driver , safely navigating horrendous traffic ,and an excellent guide .The drive into to the hills beyond Rio was spectacular .The history of Petropolis as an Imperial summer home was a revelation , as was the 1930'sl Art DEco hotel/ casino complex . This was an amazing building with room after room of surprises . We kept expecting to see Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers around every corner.
Marcello steered us to an enjoyable lunch at a chirascuria and encouraged us to walk it off with a guided tour of the city .Among the highlights were a visit to the Cathedral and Santa Dumos the pioneer aviator strange little house and museum.
We left Petropolis as the sun was setting over the hills and the winding road down to Rio . Marcello dropped us at the airport in good time for our flight . We recommend Marcello as an excellent driver , a very knowlegable tour guide who took pains to find out our interests , and most of all as a considerate companion who was intent on providing us with a most enjoyable day out.
PS
this our second review of this trip , the first is still out there in Cyberspace

We chose the private tour to Petropolis as had been to Rio de Janeiro before and wanted to be away from then hustle and bustle of the big city. The private tour gave us flexible and basically we made up our itinery. Marcelo, our guide picked us promptly at the cruise terminal. Serra dos Orgaes was breathtaking. Quitandinha was like a resort in Austria. Marcelo provided us with coolers filled with bottled water and snacks. As parking was a bit tricky at the Palace Museum, he provided us with his cell phone so that we could text him to pick us. That was smart and efficient. After our break at ten Museum cafe, we drove into town and saw the heritage buildings and visited the oCathedral. Marcelo talked about the history of Petropolis and the royal family. We also visited the Santos Dumont Museum and the Crystal Palace. We also stopped by Fatima's Shrine on our way back to Rio. Marcelo suggested other places the Brewery tour, the chocolate factory etc but we gave those a pass.
At our request, we made a detour to Copacabana Beach as we had never set foot on this beach.
Throughout the tour, Marcelo provided us with background info on the attractions and let us know that we could stay as long as we wanted in any given place.
We would recommend this tour for anybody who has seen the must see attractions in Rio. Marcelo is an excellent guide and we were very lucky to have him.

I wish I could give 10 stars. Way to go Marcelo!

We were a family of 2 adults and a 12 years old.

When I booked this tour in Viator, We expected just a tour guide who could show us around Petropolis. But we got a lot more. Marcelo, our private tour guide, with fluent English, made us feel at home throughout the tour. It was more like two families going on a picnic.

Marcelo had neatly packed water, drinks and snacks for us in couple of backpacks. His car was super clean. He arrived on time and was quite flexible with the timings. We felt safe with his driving. Marcelo's reommendation for lunch was great. While Marcelo was good at sharing interesting facts like a professional tour guide, he also handled my DSLR camera well and got us some good pictures.

Marcelo was kind enough to also bring his wife as we had space in the car. Thanks Marcelo, that made us feel we are on a family picnic. When Marcelo had to drop us at a convenient spot and go for parking, his wife assumed the role of a tour guide proactively and kept us engaged with some interesting facts. Athough it was a bit challenging for her to speak fluent English, she tried her best and succeeded as well. She was very eager to share facts and her views. Our heartfelt thanks goes to her.

I wanted to share my feedback on TripAdvisor. It is unfortunate Marcelo has some issues in setting up TripAdvisor account. On the positive side, his absence on TripAdvisor helped me to avail his services sorry for being selfish, Marcelo. If Marcelo had been on TripAdvisor, I am sure his itinerary for the next 3 months would have been packed full.

Despite the low clouds and drizzle we greatly enjoyed our day trip to Petropolis. It was very interesting to see additional history of Brazil in the museum. The town itself was very pleasant to walk around and a great contrast to Rio de Janeiro. Not all of Brazil is on the beach!
Our guide, Marcelo, was flexible, attentive to our needs and presented options so that we could choose what we were most interested in.
