Venture beyond Bucharest to explore Romania’s medieval legends on a private day trip to the Curtea de Arges Monastery and the ruins of Poenari Citadel, known as the ‘real Castle Dracula’ for its ties to Vlad the Impaler. You’ll also soak up the natural beauty of the Carpathians at Vidraru Lake on this completely customizable adventure.
  • Private, full-day tour of Wallachian highlights from Bucharest
  • Hear local legends and pay tribute at the tombs of Romanian kings at the ornate Curtea de Arges Monastery
  • Visit the fortress of Vlad the Impaler at Poenari Citadel, the 'real' Castle Dracula
  • See one of Europe's highest lakes, Vidraru Dam
  • Flexible itinerary and private guide
  • Hotel pickup and drop-off included
Meet your guide and climb into a private vehicle after morning pickup at your Bucharest hotel. Enjoy the ride as you escape city limits and enter the tranquil landscapes of the Romanian countryside. After about 2 hours, stop at the Curtea de Arges Monastery, an impressive Byzantine-style church that dates back to the 16th century and houses the tombs of several Romanian kings. Admire the Moorish arabesques and ornate interior while learning of the many dark legends that surround the monastery’s construction.
Continue on to Poenari Citadel, a crumbling medieval fortress once occupied by infamous Wallachian prince Vlad Tepes. While other castles may claim ties to the bloodthirsty man who inspired the Dracula legend, this is the real deal. Reaching the hilltop fortress requires good physical condition for a climb of more than 1,000 stone steps; you’ll be rewarded with commanding views that ‘Vlad the Impaler’ himself once set eyes on.
Finally, get a dose of the area’s natural beauty at Vidraru Dam, also known as Vidraru Lake. Be sure to keep your camera handy for stunning shots of this man-made lake framed by the majestic Carpathian mountains, and taste traditional cuisine during a lunch stop at a local restaurant (own expense). Relax on the return drive to Bucharest, where the full-day tour concludes in the early evening. Throughout the day, you can set the pace of the tour, lingering at certain stops that interest you for a customized day in the country.

So first we went to the monastery. It seems hit or miss if you can take photos inside. There was a church behind it though where we could. Both were pretty cool to see! And especially knowing the history of these kings was amazing to see!
After this we went to vlads ruins. It is pretty cool to see from the bottom. To get to the top is 1400 steps. I highly recommend you try to do a test run or two of 1500 stairs/steps to see if you can. If not...I would recommend just staying at the bottom and taking pics from there. The tour guides were super helpful and advised me multiple times about the steps and tried helping me....sadly I am a bit of a fattie so couldn't make it more then half way lol. But that's my fault. Is still awesome to see from the bottom though. Trip down is a LOT easier. Stairs are vastly different then walking though. Just be aware if your not in great shape haha. Tour guides tried their best to help me though so kudos on them :
After that we ate food at the place right there. They even let can wrap it so u can take it back to your hotel with you.
Finally we went to the dam / Vidraru lake. Was pretty awesome to see! I felt better by that point again hehe.
