Spent an amazing morning at Ostia. The guide was great - she'd worked on the dig here for 7 years so knew so much about the place. We were a small group of 4 which was fab rather than a huge group.
Its an area thats full of pine trees so if you are prone to being bitten do use insect repellent - I was bitten to death which was very unexpected in late October. A great tour, we got fabulous photos. Highly recommended - knocks spots off Pompeii
The area is amazing and our tour guide was very informative and engaging.
For those new to Rome, the meeting point of this tour can be a bit confusing, Make sure that you go close to the train station in Porta San Paolo, which requires that you cross the street a couple of times. Be wary of Roman traffic. :-
That said, the tour was very good. Our guide Sara is an expert in her field, that's for sure archaeology, and the tour she took us on was very, very good. However, I had hoped to see Portus, the port of Claudius and Trajan. That is situated some 3 km north of Ostia Antica proper, and so was out of reach on a tour that lasted some 4 hours.
I can strongly recommend this tour and Sara as a guide.
