What You Can Expect

Ancient Rome and Colosseum Tour: Underground Chambers, Arena and Upper Tier

Ruins at Palatine Hill

Your tour starts outside the Colosseum, where you’ll meet your guide, a Roman history enthusiast, and skip the entrance line with your fast-track ticket.

Inside, begin below ground to explore the Colosseum’s tunnels, chambers and pits. This section of the amphitheater is only open to a select number of visitors each day, so enjoy this exclusive chance to see more than most people do. While you walk through the underground passageways, listen to stories about the wild animals who were held down here and the Roman gladiators who prepared for their battles here.

Next, head upward, stopping on the arena floor level. Most visitors are restricted to walk only around the edge, but you have access to walk on the floor itself, standing on the same spot where the battles took place. Not much of the original floor remains, but you can peer down through the gaps to see the underground chambers. Then continue moving up to the Colosseum’s upper tier, now open again after it closed in the 1970s. This top level may have been where Rome’s lower classes of spectators were relegated to sit, but it afford panoramic views of the arena—another unique perspective that many visitors don’t get.

Upon exiting the Colosseum, walk with your guide over to the Roman Forum, once the political heart of the city. Take in the sprawl of ancient ruins, and walk up Palatine Hill, once home to Ancient Rome’s wealthy residents, for a view of Circus Maximus, where chariot races took place. Your tour ends on Via Sacra, the main street of Ancient Rome that links the Colosseum to Capitoline Hill.

Great access to the Colosseum. Prepare to spend more time after the tour with Palantine Hill and the Forum. The tour only covers a portion of Palantine Hill and the Forum. Not the fault of the tour, just that both have so much to see. My tour ran from 11:30 to 2:30. But I stayed on Palantine Hill and the Forum until they kicked me out around 6:15.

A hugely informative tour with a great guide who is an architect/archeologist and clearly loves and has such a passion for the Roman ruins. We did wait for a short time in line to get into the Colosseum, but that was a factor of the security. This tour took the group down to the lower level and it was great to see and hear all that the Colosseum has to offer. The lower part is not open to the general public, so not only do you see a portion that most cannot see, it was not crowded either. Plan on standing the entirety of the tour 3 hours, wear comfortable shoes - ones that are okay for uneven flooring and stairs. The Roman Forum portion was great also with tons of information that one could only get with a lot of research. Highly recommended.

Great experience with an excellent and knowledgeable guide who really added a lot of information to the colosseum, forum and palantine. Access to the restricted areas also means you can avoid a lot of the crowds inside the colosseum.

This tour was amazing! We went for the morning tour, which was good as we missed the midday sun. Take a jacket with you, as the underground is cold in the early morning. The guides were well versed on history and were very friendly. We're glad we went for the tour with the underground and upper tier, as we were granted access to areas you wouldn't normally see, and get fantastic views. We avoided massive queues - which is always a bonus. Would highly recommend!
