What You Can Expect

Ancient Rome and Colosseum Tour: Underground Chambers and Arena

Ruins at Palatine Hill

Your tour starts outside the Colosseum, where you’ll meet your guide, a Roman history enthusiast, and skip the entrance line with your fast-track ticket.

Inside, begin below ground to explore the Colosseum’s tunnels, chambers and pits. This section of the amphitheater is only open to a select number of visitors each day, so enjoy this exclusive chance to see more than most people do. While you walk through the underground passageways, listen to stories about the wild animals who were held down here and the Roman gladiators who prepared for their battles here.

Next, head upward, stopping on the arena floor level. Most visitors are restricted to walk only around the edge, but you have access to walk on the floor itself, standing on the same spot where the battles took place. Not much of the original floor remains, but you can peer down through the gaps to see the underground chambers.

Upon exiting the Colosseum, walk with your guide over to the Roman Forum, once the political heart of the city. Take in the sprawl of ancient ruins, and walk up Palatine Hill, once home to Ancient Rome’s wealthy residents, for a view of Circus Maximus, where chariot races took place. Your tour ends on Via Sacra, the main street of Ancient Rome that links the Colosseum to Capitoline Hill.

Please note: The order of sites visited may be reversed during your tour.

I have traveled a lot in Europe but I have never met such a fantastic guide as Halina. She is extreme knowledgeable but more importantly she delivers her words with enthusiasm. STRONGLY RECOMENDED

My 75 year old mother did this tour with me and thoroughly enjoyed it. There were two guides. The first guide met us and the small group outside of the Colosseum and walked us inside. She gave us a good history lesson while we waited on the second tour guide to take us underground. The underground was very interesting and worth the visit. The second tour guide then took us to the third level and then quickly got our headsets back. Some of the group were upset that we were asked to go back down and to exit the Colosseum for the rest of the tour because photo opportunities were lost. It would have been easy for the second tour guide to allow the group to take 5 mins for photo opps. Some guests did leave the group because of this. However, those that stayed we proceeded with our first guide and she was amazing. We walked to the antiquities park which was the heart of Rome near the Colosseum. She shared so much history and was passionate about sharing it. The whole tour is definitely worth while if you are a history buff. Just make sure you take your photo opportunities!

I could not recommend this tour enough, a brilliant insight into ancient Rome. Undoubtably the best way to learn so much in a short period of time. We took an early morning tour leaving at 8:30 I have to be honest i wasn't looking forward to the very early morning especially when i was on holiday! However on reflection it was an excellent choice. We were not rushed and enjoyed better views of the Colosseum, the forum and Palatine Hill. The guide was friendly, knowledgable and spoke excellent English, and most importantly walked at a sensible pace! Plenty of walking and steps to climb but don't let that put you off!

Amazing tour and gives you enough of Rome you want to come back for more. It was the perfect amount of information and the group wasn't too large.

Our guide Mrs Lisa was very attentive and provided us with Colosseo and Palatinum historical information. The astonishing opportunity to visit the underground of the Colosseo was incredibily worthy and it was guided by Mrs Cristine an outstanding archeologist. Both guides should be connected by phone

This was a great experience! It was the one tour type event we booked in Rome. I teach study abroad in Italy and I usually play tour guide for people on my personal travels to Italy. But my husband wanted to do a tour of the Colosseum and we had a great time. Susanna was so personable and presented all the information with a great flair for details and a passion for Rome. She took care of all the practicalities time for photos, keeping us all together, etc. while being approachable and open to questions and spending more time in one area than in others if we wanted. She spoke English very well and has a clear voice. The information she provided was great and she was never stumped by a question. The fact that the tour allows you to go out on the stage and to go underneath the floor makes this an unforgettable experience. And Susanna was the icing on the cake!
