What You Can Expect

Ancient Rome and Colosseum Tour: Underground Chambers, Arena and Upper Tier

Ruins at Palatine Hill

Your tour starts outside the Colosseum, where you’ll meet your guide, a Roman history enthusiast, and skip the entrance line with your fast-track ticket.

Inside, begin below ground to explore the Colosseum’s tunnels, chambers and pits. This section of the amphitheater is only open to a select number of visitors each day, so enjoy this exclusive chance to see more than most people do. While you walk through the underground passageways, listen to stories about the wild animals who were held down here and the Roman gladiators who prepared for their battles here.

Next, head upward, stopping on the arena floor level. Most visitors are restricted to walk only around the edge, but you have access to walk on the floor itself, standing on the same spot where the battles took place. Not much of the original floor remains, but you can peer down through the gaps to see the underground chambers. Then continue moving up to the Colosseum’s upper tier, now open again after it closed in the 1970s. This top level may have been where Rome’s lower classes of spectators were relegated to sit, but it afford panoramic views of the arena—another unique perspective that many visitors don’t get.

Upon exiting the Colosseum, walk with your guide over to the Roman Forum, once the political heart of the city. Take in the sprawl of ancient ruins, and walk up Palatine Hill, once home to Ancient Rome’s wealthy residents, for a view of Circus Maximus, where chariot races took place. Your tour ends on Via Sacra, the main street of Ancient Rome that links the Colosseum to Capitoline Hill.

Amazing experience.
The tour guide was the best we had in our trip to Europe and showed us as much as possible while giving us heaps of worthwhile information.

Really excellent guide! Loved this tour. A good mix of local and history knowledge, didn't feel rushed. Visiting the underground section was very interesting and the archaeologist who conducted that part of the tour was very good at providing the right amount of details.

We were given time at the end of the tour we wrapped about 5:00PM to stay in Ancient Rome and explore it some more but most of us were done by then having been out in the hot sun on our feet for hours. Make sure and have an empty water bottle to fill for this part of the tour. You can't take full water bottles into the Colosseum any more but you can fill them once you are in from water fountains there. Also, toilet access is a bit challenging so be aware of that given the tour duration.

The tour gets a 5 star because of the venue, not because of our guide who was a bit 'dry' and not very enthusiastic. It was fantastic to have access to all the colosseum's levels. Definitely recommended to go as early as possible in summer, before the heat gets too much!

Everything was well organised and is a must to do in Rome. Our guide Gigi was immense. Not only was he very knowledgeable but he presented his subject with wit, passion and fun.

This was a great tour. Our guide Tiberius was incredibly knowledgeable and obviously passionate about Rome and it's history. Being able to go through some of the less trafficked areas was great and gave some good insight. Be prepared to climb lots of stairs, but but the views are well worth it.

Both the Viator and Colloseum tour guides were very knowledgable and gave us little bits of information to help understand what we were seeing. This was a great tour and one I recommend to others

Wonderful way to see ancient rome! Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and took us through the best of the Colosseum and ancient Rome. The only negative was a 2 pm tour in August was very hot. The morning tour might be cooler.
