What You Can Expect

Ancient Rome and Colosseum Tour: Underground Chambers and Arena

Ruins at Palatine Hill

Your tour starts outside the Colosseum, where you’ll meet your guide, a Roman history enthusiast, and skip the entrance line with your fast-track ticket.

Inside, begin below ground to explore the Colosseum’s tunnels, chambers and pits. This section of the amphitheater is only open to a select number of visitors each day, so enjoy this exclusive chance to see more than most people do. While you walk through the underground passageways, listen to stories about the wild animals who were held down here and the Roman gladiators who prepared for their battles here.

Next, head upward, stopping on the arena floor level. Most visitors are restricted to walk only around the edge, but you have access to walk on the floor itself, standing on the same spot where the battles took place. Not much of the original floor remains, but you can peer down through the gaps to see the underground chambers.

Upon exiting the Colosseum, walk with your guide over to the Roman Forum, once the political heart of the city. Take in the sprawl of ancient ruins, and walk up Palatine Hill, once home to Ancient Rome’s wealthy residents, for a view of Circus Maximus, where chariot races took place. Your tour ends on Via Sacra, the main street of Ancient Rome that links the Colosseum to Capitoline Hill.

Please note: The order of sites visited may be reversed during your tour.

Really worthy. I am really grumpy in the morning but the tour guide of course she didn't know it really cheer me up. The explanation is amazing and for me was really worth to visit this part of Rome with a guide.

This tour was amazing - from seeing every part of the Colosseum and Roman Forum to the amazing facts provided by our two tour guides - Masimo and Gabriel - it was well worth the cost! I would highly recommend this tour for anyone who has a week in Rome - all of the Viator tours were amazing and this was near the top of the list!

I have traveled a lot in Europe but I have never met such a fantastic guide as Halina. She is extreme knowledgeable but more importantly she delivers her words with enthusiasm. STRONGLY RECOMENDED

My 75 year old mother did this tour with me and thoroughly enjoyed it. There were two guides. The first guide met us and the small group outside of the Colosseum and walked us inside. She gave us a good history lesson while we waited on the second tour guide to take us underground. The underground was very interesting and worth the visit. The second tour guide then took us to the third level and then quickly got our headsets back. Some of the group were upset that we were asked to go back down and to exit the Colosseum for the rest of the tour because photo opportunities were lost. It would have been easy for the second tour guide to allow the group to take 5 mins for photo opps. Some guests did leave the group because of this. However, those that stayed we proceeded with our first guide and she was amazing. We walked to the antiquities park which was the heart of Rome near the Colosseum. She shared so much history and was passionate about sharing it. The whole tour is definitely worth while if you are a history buff. Just make sure you take your photo opportunities!

I could not recommend this tour enough, a brilliant insight into ancient Rome. Undoubtably the best way to learn so much in a short period of time. We took an early morning tour leaving at 8:30 I have to be honest i wasn't looking forward to the very early morning especially when i was on holiday! However on reflection it was an excellent choice. We were not rushed and enjoyed better views of the Colosseum, the forum and Palatine Hill. The guide was friendly, knowledgable and spoke excellent English, and most importantly walked at a sensible pace! Plenty of walking and steps to climb but don't let that put you off!
