What You Can Expect

Castel Sant'Angelo and Ponte Sant'Angelo Walking Tour in Rome

Discover the ancient Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome on a small-group walking tour

Meet your guide at the Castel Sant’Angelo, a short distance from Vatican City overlooking the Tiber River. Collect a headset if you prefer to listen to the guide that way, and learn a bit about the castle before you prior to actually going inside.

Built in the 2nd century BC, the Castel Sant’Angelo was the final resting place of Emperor Hadrian when this land was still well outside the city limits of Rome. As the city expanded, the castle eventually became part of Rome’s fortified walls and then, by the 14th century, served as a papal retreat as well as a prison.

Hear the legend of how the Archangel Michael is said to have alighted at the top of the Castel Sant’Angelo in 590 AD, which residents believed put an end to the plague that was decimating the city. It’s from this legendary incident that the castle gets its current angelic name.

Still outside the castle, take time to admire the 10 Bernini statues that line the Ponte Sant’Angelo. The bridge dates from Hadrian’s time, but the statues were added in the 17th century.

Enter the castle (own expense) with your guide to explore the inside of this fortified structure. See the incredible papal apartments with gorgeous frescoes on the walls, and contrast those with the cramped prison cells elsewhere in the castle. See what’s left of Hadrian’s tomb in the lower levels, as well as the towers and ramparts of the fortifications.

The final stop on your tour is the rooftop of the castle, where you can enjoy excellent views over Rome and a close-up look at the statue of the Archangel Michael that adorns the top of the castle.

The tour ends after roughly 3 hours when your guide leaves you outside the castle.
