Meet your guide and group of no more than 10 riders at the bike station in central Rome. With the help of your guide, select a bike to match your riding style: either a standard road bike or a hybrid mountain bike. Both are suitable for the 37-mile (60 kilometer) round-trip ride ahead. To take part, you should be physically fit, and able to cycle this distance.

When you’re ready, hop on your bike and leave Rome behind, following the fairly busy Appia Nuova road southeast into the Alban Hills, a winemaking area of volcanic hills, vineyards, and lakes. The wooded hills are scattered with charming villages called the Castelli Romani or ‘Roman Castles.’

Reach the pretty village of Castel Gandolfo, the summer retreat of the Pope, and make the steady and regular climb, without steep sections, to the rim of a volcanic crater overlooking Lake Albano. On reaching the top, relax at a café overlooking Castel’s main piazza and lake.

Sip a cappuccino as you gaze out over the Papal Palace and church, and then ride along the shores of Lake Albano and up to a hillside viewpoint to soak in sweeping views over the town.

Breeze back downhill catching glimpses of the lake below, and pass through Marino, another wine town that’s also known for its sparkling water.
Then, continue to Frascati, a lovely medieval town famous for its white wine, and dotted with historical villas built by various popes through the centuries.

Stop at a traditional osteria (restaurant-bar), with a long winemaking heritage, and enjoy some of the best local Frascati wine made from the grapes grown on the surrounding slopes, accompanied by fruit, bread, or other snacks.

Finally, cycle back to Rome where your trip ends at the original departure point.
