What You Can Expect

Civitavecchia Shore Excursion: Rome Day Trip with Skip-the-Line Vatican Admission

Visit St Peter's Basilica inside Vatican City

When your cruise ship docks at the Civitavecchia port, board your coach for the approximate 1-hour drive to Rome, depending on traffic conditions, to begin your shore excursion. Upon arrival in Vatican City, use your skip-the-line ticket to jump past the queue and go straight inside the Vatican Museums.

A complex of 54 galleries, the Vatican Museums are home to artworks collected by the Roman Catholic Church over many centuries, most famous of which is the Renaissance art by Raphael and Michelangelo. This is not a guided tour, so you are free to explore the galleries at your own pace, stopping when you wish to admire paintings, statues, murals, sculptures and artifacts. The most popular rooms include the Gallery of Maps, Gallery of Tapestries, Raphael’s Rooms, Pio Clementino’s Rooms, the Belvedere Courtyard and the Pinecone Courtyard.

Of course, you don’t want to miss the Sistine Chapel, where you’ll gaze in wonder at Michelangelo’s iconic frescos The Creation of Adam and The Last Judgment. When you leave the museums, enjoy some time outside in St Peter’s Square, and perhaps enter St Peter’s Basilica, one of the world’s most significant catholic sites, whose dome dominates the Rome skyline. It’s home to more Renaissance art.

If you have time after your visit to the Vatican, you may explore the nearby area at your leisure before you must to your coach for the drive back to the cruise port.

Please note:
When you arrive at the Vatican Museums, you must present your passport or ID card in order to receive an audio guide. If you aren’t able to do so, a deposit of 25 euros (approx.) is required. Your ID or deposit will be returned at the end of your tour.
