Choose a start time when you book, then meet your guide at a location near the Colosseum. Get to know your guide and group over a welcome drink, then kick off your tour with an hour-long intro to the sights of Ancient Rome.
Pass along Via dei Fori Imperiali, and stroll past the Roman Forum, home to Trajan’s Market and a wealth of archaeological treasures. As your guide talks, you’ll make use of a headset to ensure no commentary is missed.
Then, head to the Colosseum for your 75-minute after-hours tour. Free from the daytime crowds, the Colosseum is somehow more impressive; with more free space, the scale of the ancient structure becomes strikingly apparent.
Learn about the site’s construction from your guide, and wander around the main arena floor where fierce gladiatorial battles were fought. Head down into the dungeons, where gladiators and animals awaited their fate with trepidation, then make your way to the Colosseum’s second tier to see where the bloodthirsty Romans cheered. Your tour then ends outside the Colosseum.
Upgrade: Colosseum and Roman Forum by Night (3 hours)
Book an extended tour on a Friday evening, and enjoy after-hours access to the Roman Forum, too. After exploring the forum, you’ll visit the 6th-century Santa Maria Antiqua Basilica, a restored church that only reopened to the public in 2016.
Please note: The Rome metro service closes at 11:30pm on weeknights. If you book the upgrade option, you may need a taxi after the tour ends.
