Go beneath Rome's Colosseum for a 4-hour, underground tour of the largest amphitheater ever built. Step into the darkened chambers where gladiators prepared to meet their match in the arena, and see a recreated timber elevator that shows how animals were lifted up toward the spotlight. Then set out to visit both the nearby Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, Rome's centermost hill and one of its most ancient parts.
This tour was a little long for the teens in our group. We toured the Forum first and the teens were bored waiting for the underground. It was worth the wait. Great tour lots of history. Our guide was great. I would recommend this tour.
Our family of 4, including 2 teenagers took this tour and it was amazing! Our tour guide, Francesca was so informative and very funny. She went out of her way to take care of us during the tour and even after by suggesting good restaurants to try near where the tour ended. Seeing the underground of the Colosseum was so incredible, it was worth the extra money to get that experience.
We only booked one guided tour on our recent two-week trip to Italy, and it was this one. Our goal was to have access tot he Colosseum Underground, but we got so much more from the tour than just that.
Our guide, Francesca, was engaged the entire four hours with the group as we explored the Forum and Colosseum. She answered questions and kept everyone's interest going, without letting anybody monopolize the group's time or her focus. She brought an excellent perspective and her passion for the subject matter was on obvious display.
Booking a long tour like this is a costly investment in both time and money -- but we were very glad we did.
Alessia was totally awesome! I couldn't believe our luck to get a tour guide with this type of background. She was so knowledgeable in the areas that were pertinent to this tour.
This was fascinating, even though it overlapped with an earlier Colosseum tour I had taken. The tour guide was easy to understand, and explained things I hadn't heard previously. And seeing the underground added a tremendous dimension to the Colosseum! I enjoy back-stage tours in theaters and plays, and this didn't disappoint. I would only warn: there is overlap with other Colosseum tours.
Of the nearly 10,000 visitors per day to the Colosseum, only about 500 get to go under the stage to where the gladiators actually entered the arena. It is almost impossible to book tickets yourself as they sell out in seconds. So - booking a tour like this one is your next best option. But as you can imagine - this tour sells out quickly, so book as far in advance as you can. You won't be disappointed. After our thorough tour of the Colosseum, our guide took us across the way to an equally interesting tour of the Palestine Hill and Roman Forum. Wow! I can't believe how much they covered in one tour. Well worth the price. My one warning is be sure you're up for a lot of walking. Wear good shoes, bring water, and be aware of the weather - it rained on us a bit. Luckily, there are street venders everywhere that can sell you water, hats, umbrellas, and just about anything you could need. According to my Fit Bit, we walked about 4.5 miles on this tour. And went up 19 flights of stairs.
We booked the early morning 8:30am small-group colosseum underground tour which started in the Roman Forum and it felt like we had the place to ourselves!! Our tour guide, Elise, was fabulous!! She is an archaeologist by trade and was a wealth of knowledge. Our Colosseum tour guide, Gabriel, was excellent. He was very animated in his delivery, bringing to life the history of the Colosseum. I am very happy we booked the smaller, early morning tour as the crowds definitely picked up as the morning went on. I would definitely recommend this tour to others!!
We loved this private tour and enjoyed the tour guide,Vincent? and his passion and knowledge. We would definitely recommend this tour!
Great tour! Amazing to see the underground parts of the Colosseum. Our son absolutely loved it. Roman forums and the Palantine Hills were magnificent. Lots of walking though!
