What You Can Expect

Colosseum Underground and Ancient Rome Small-Group Tour

Explore the fascinating underground passageways in the Colosseum

After meeting your guide at the Colosseum Metro Station, head to the ancient amphitheater, Rome’s most legendary landmark. Cruise past the entrance queue with your skip-the-line ticket, allowing you to waste no time inside this Roman icon, where gladiator battles once entertained more than 50,000 spectators.

With your guide, start your tour on the underground level, which is only open to a limited number of visitors each day. Walk through the maze of subterranean chambers to see where fierce animals were once caged, and listen to stories from your guide about the gruesome gladiator battles. Then walk up to the arena level, and follow your guide into the area where the battles were fought, instead of tracing the edge, as most visitors do. Tread lightly over pieces of the original floor as you look below through the gaps.

Continue up to the top level, where Rome’s lower classes sat, and take in a bird’s-eye view of the arena. Then exit the Colosseum, taking a short break before continuing your tour with a walk up Palatine Hill, one of the Seven Hills of Rome. Wander through pine trees while learning from your guide about Ancient Rome’s origins, and see where the wealthiest Romans used to live.

Next, head down into the Roman Forum, following your guide around the ruins that once made up the city’s political and commercial heart. Hear about structures like the Arch of Titus and the Senate before your tour ends here, where you have the chance to stay longer, if you wish.

This tour was absolutely fantastic! Our lovely guide Alessandra was so knowledgeable in Roman history and was very patient - we learnt so much more being in a small tour group. The access to the underground area was amazing as was the very top level - fantastic views - well worth the extra money! Lots of ground to cover but well worth every step - so many ancient buildings to see on one site. Would highly recommend this trip.

This was an amazing experience I highly recommend to visitors of Rome. Our tour guide, Lucca, was fantastic!!! His passion, enthusiasm, and love for Rome was obvious, and set the tone for a wonderful 3 hours of touring the Colosseum and the Roman forums. This is not to be missed! In a small group of 6, we were taken to the lower and upper levels of the Colosseum for special views of the entire complex and great photo opportunities. He really created an image in our minds of what it must have been like thousands of years ago. He is very knowledgeable, warm, and, for us, was the perfect guide! There is a lot of walking, so bring comfortable shoes. I cannot recommend this tour enough!

We visited with Thomas who took us all over the Coliseum, the Paladine Hill and the Forum bringing it to life with interesting explanations - just the right level of detail. Seven booked this tour and they kept the promise of no more than six by sending two guides and splitting the group. It was awesome to stand on the reconstructed floor of the Coliseum and look up at the walls. Downstairs was well worth the extra fee.

Well this is a great tour. Being a small group of six it was easy to get around and get to places that other larger groups can't get into. My wife and I learnt so much from 'Parmel' our guide who was extremely professional, knowledgeable and friendly. We highly recommend this tour for price and content Sometimes you pay a little more but get much more in return! Exceptional Tour!

We had an amazing time and our tour guide Luca, was very knowledgeable and made it a fun experience! I highly recommend this tour...as it permits you to see a couple areas that most tourists on a regular tour cannot see without the proper tour guide.

We cannot recommend this highly enough. Ancient Rome comes to life and you get a real understanding and insight into an extraordinary period of time and place. Even for us who have travelled to Rome on many occasions and studied Ancient History and Latin that includes our kids we learnt a lot from this tour. And above all else it was fun. I doubt we would have enjoyed it as much with a large Tour.
The highlight was our guide Lucca whose personality made the Tour great.
If you have not been to Rome this is the best Tour to start to understand Rome's past and its presence.

Our tour guide, Rachel, was fabulous! We learned so much about the inner workings of the Colosseum and appreciate the way we were taken to so many key positions for viewing and photo taking. Thank you for a marvelous tour of the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, and the Forum!

This tour was fantastic! Our guide was so knowledgeable - I felt like it was a history class as much as a tour in a good way!. I will say this was our last tour on the last day of our vacation and it was a lot of walking. I wasn't sure we were going to make it through Palatine Hill, but I'm so glad we persevered, as the big payoff was the Colosseum! The underground, as well as going to the very top were definitely worth the extra!
