What You Can Expect

Colosseum Underground and Ancient Rome Small-Group Tour

Explore the fascinating underground passageways in the Colosseum

After meeting your guide at the Colosseum Metro Station, head to the ancient amphitheater, Rome’s most legendary landmark. Cruise past the entrance queue with your skip-the-line ticket, allowing you to waste no time inside this Roman icon, where gladiator battles once entertained more than 50,000 spectators.

With your guide, start your tour on the underground level, which is only open to a limited number of visitors each day. Walk through the maze of subterranean chambers to see where fierce animals were once caged, and listen to stories from your guide about the gruesome gladiator battles. Then walk up to the arena level, and follow your guide into the area where the battles were fought, instead of tracing the edge, as most visitors do. Tread lightly over pieces of the original floor as you look below through the gaps.

Then exit the Colosseum, taking a short break before continuing your tour with a walk up Palatine Hill, one of the Seven Hills of Rome. Wander through pine trees while learning from your guide about Ancient Rome’s origins, and see where the wealthiest Romans used to live.

Next, head down into the Roman Forum, following your guide around the ruins that once made up the city’s political and commercial heart. Hear about structures like the Arch of Titus and the Senate before your tour ends here, where you have the chance to stay longer, if you wish.

This tour was fantastically thorough and the knowledge that our guide Thomas had was simply amazing. The tour group was small so we were all able to listen and ask our questions easily. Our guide was fluent in english which was a huge relief as I had not taken into account the huge language barrier when I planned this trip.

I would highly recommend this tour over others!

Deborah was absolutely incredible! She knows her stuff and truly made this experience wonderful. Give her some time to warm up a bit, get you through all the massive crowds, once she gets going it will be great. This Tour is definitely a must-see, very fortunate to have done this and to see all the amazing structures and to walk in all the ancient places. Definitely do not want to spoil this for anyone, it's an experience that is worth it! Thanks again Deborah, my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed this trip with you.

Our tour guide, Giulia, made this tour for us. She was passionate about teaching us the history of the Colosseum and Ancient Rome. Love that this was a small group eight of us. Would highly recommend.

Tour guide was excellent and tour was amazing. We really enjoyed seeing the underground areas. The Roman Forum was grand! Our guide always offered to take pictures of us. We battled a thunderstorm the whole time, and still thought it was fantastic. A must do.

Mom, when can we come back to the Colosseum? I can't express how great our tour with Valentina and LivItaly was. At first, my two young children didn't seem interested in a four hour long walking tour about relics and dirt and buildings that had no bearing on their days. Then they met Valentina. She was so excited to meet them and immediately showed them her book of past and present Rome. She was effervescent and kind and patient and wonderful. She answered ALL of their million and one questions and gave details that were relevant to kids and adults. She took us through relics and turned dirt into a vivid display of history and lively visualizations to make us feel like we were there with the gladiators and Roman Vestile Virgins and Senators. She was remarkable and energetic throughout the whole tour. And even after the tour, she gave us a great recommendation for food near the colloseum! Don't waste your time with any other company. This one takes care of you and your needs and makes sure you get the most of your vacation.

Our guide Rachel was wonderful! You could just see her enthusiasm for history and sharing her knowledge, she even arranged the perfect weather :-. She was open for any and all questions and was very knowledgeable about the topics. She made the tour lots of fun!
I would definitely recommend this tour- especially if it is your first time to Rome or the Colosseum.

Worth every penny and then some as our tour guide was exceptional. This was a small group tour with only our family of 5 which was very nice and personal. He clearly has a passion for history and helped bring the history of this beautiful city to life. Was able to relate to the adults, young adults and teenager in our group. The guide spoke wonderful English and made it a very memorable experience from the Colosseum to the Roman Forum. Memories to last a lifetime.

Alex was, well I don't know if the word passionate is saying enough. She was more than fantastic and her depth of information was detailed and well presented. Of all the tour guides we had she was by far the best. Because of some disabilities we have she worked with our limitations taking routes that allowed us to see everything and she supplied detailed information.

Very good small group tour 4-people. Its was about three hours of the Colosseum, the underground and the extensive Forum. Well worth it. Got in to areas that are not available to general tickets. Highly recommended
