What You Can Expect

Colosseum Underground and Ancient Rome Small-Group Tour

Explore the fascinating underground passageways in the Colosseum

After meeting your guide at the Colosseum Metro Station, head to the ancient amphitheater, Rome’s most legendary landmark. Cruise past the entrance queue with your skip-the-line ticket, allowing you to waste no time inside this Roman icon, where gladiator battles once entertained more than 50,000 spectators.

With your guide, start your tour on the underground level, which is only open to a limited number of visitors each day. Walk through the maze of subterranean chambers to see where fierce animals were once caged, and listen to stories from your guide about the gruesome gladiator battles. Then walk up to the arena level, and follow your guide into the area where the battles were fought, instead of tracing the edge, as most visitors do. Tread lightly over pieces of the original floor as you look below through the gaps.

Then exit the Colosseum, taking a short break before continuing your tour with a walk up Palatine Hill, one of the Seven Hills of Rome. Wander through pine trees while learning from your guide about Ancient Rome’s origins, and see where the wealthiest Romans used to live.

Next, head down into the Roman Forum, following your guide around the ruins that once made up the city’s political and commercial heart. Hear about structures like the Arch of Titus and the Senate before your tour ends here, where you have the chance to stay longer, if you wish.

Another great experience. Viator booked us with LivItaly tours and our guide David was fantastic.

Our tour of the Colosseum took us to spots away from the crowds and we had time for photos. Our guide was very knowledgeable and was able to really impart the feelings of the gladiators and spectators. Continuing on to the Palatine Hills our guide used his virtual reality I pad to show how the are looked when first constructed. What a great way to see sights and learn about Ancient Rome.

I just wanted to say that Rachel was amazing and exceeded all expectations. I honestly can say that she only enhanced my experience at the Colosseum and I am grateful we had her. Her knowledge, energy and passion is everything that you want from a guide. And the fact she was english speaking, made it easier. I have had a few tours throughout Italy and whilst the guide speak english, you can't understand them, so with Rachel being american - added bonus.

One of the other huge benefits it that it's small group and access to the VIP. I booked all my tours in Australia prior to coming over so couldn't remember what I had actually booked, so it was great that it was only 6 people. This tour is just amazing.

I've done this same tour with Viator in the large group and small group format with different family members along visiting with me. No question: it's worth it to pay extra for the small group tour experience! The website said it our group would be no more than eight, but it ended up being just six of us. The previous summer I had done the same Viator Colosseum/Forum tour but in a large group of 20-25. The extra cost was totally worth it. And our guide was fantastic! She was so knowledgeable, interesting, and patient. Great at taking questions and giving us what felt like an unhurried and in-depth understanding of what we were seeing.

Francesca was an incredible guide. My mom and I went on the tour and loved it. We were able to see the underground part and get the history behind everything and we traveled to the upper levels as well. She gave us time at each spot to stop and take pictures and ask questions. It was the best part of our Rome trip. Plus the small group size was perfect!

Fantastic tour of the Colosseum and Forum! There were just 2 couples in this group and small group tours are the only way to see the sites in Rome.

Out of our 9 day trip to Rome, with 7 tours booked, this one was our absolute favorite! I would give it 6 stars if I could. Our guide, Francesca P, was outstanding - a fountain of knowledge. There were only 6 people in our group, and the tour took us to areas not open to general admission, so we never had difficulty hearing our guide. The Colosseum underground and Roman Forum are truly a must-see but be aware that there is lots of walking for this tour. And take your camera, as there are lots of great photo ops!
