What You Can Expect

Colosseum Underground and Ancient Rome Small-Group Tour

Explore the fascinating underground passageways in the Colosseum

After meeting your guide at the Colosseum Metro Station, head to the ancient amphitheater, Rome’s most legendary landmark. Cruise past the entrance queue with your skip-the-line ticket, allowing you to waste no time inside this Roman icon, where gladiator battles once entertained more than 50,000 spectators.

With your guide, start your tour on the underground level, which is only open to a limited number of visitors each day. Walk through the maze of subterranean chambers to see where fierce animals were once caged, and listen to stories from your guide about the gruesome gladiator battles. Then walk up to the arena level, and follow your guide into the area where the battles were fought, instead of tracing the edge, as most visitors do. Tread lightly over pieces of the original floor as you look below through the gaps.

Continue up to the top level, where Rome’s lower classes sat, and take in a bird’s-eye view of the arena. Then exit the Colosseum, taking a short break before continuing your tour with a walk up Palatine Hill, one of the Seven Hills of Rome. Wander through pine trees while learning from your guide about Ancient Rome’s origins, and see where the wealthiest Romans used to live.

Next, head down into the Roman Forum, following your guide around the ruins that once made up the city’s political and commercial heart. Hear about structures like the Arch of Titus and the Senate before your tour ends here, where you have the chance to stay longer, if you wish.

We did this tour last year and loved so we booked it a second time this year to share with our teenage grand daughters and they loved it as well.

Incredible place to tour. The tour guide Rachel was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about all the areas toured, was a great communicator and made me feel very at ease being a solo traveller. The tour itself was well paced, I did not feel rushed at any point and there were some amazing sites to see and learn about. The ability to tour the VIP areas was a fantastic bonus, worth the extra price of admission. I would highly recommend this tour and/or tour guide to anybody considering the tour.

This tour was fantastic! Luca, Luca, and Rachael led 3 small groups that totaled 17 people. Each was very knowledgeable and had a warm and friendly personality. We clearly had privileged access to the Colosseum. When we were on the Colosseum floor, the underground where the animals and prisoners were kept, and on the upper level, there were 17 people plus 3 guides and the Colosseum official who opened locked gates for us--no other tourists permitted. We were never in the huge crush of tourists that visit the Colosseum daily. Our guide, Luca gave us each Roman names, based on our given names and places of birth, and a role in the history of the Colosseum, which made us active participants as the history unfolded. We learned a great deal about the history in a very intimate and personal small group setting. This tour is pricey but worth very penny.

This tour, which we took in May 2016, encompassed some of the must-see sights in Rome! If possible I would highly recommend a small group tour such as this one. Our Italian tour guide was terrific, so knowledgeable and informative! And especially during the busy tourist season, it really pays to book a tour in advance and skip the line.

Enjoyed the tour of the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. We did learn that water is not allowed into the Colosseum, however, empty water bottles are okay and there are places to fill them up, after you pass security. Luca was a wonderful guide who knew the history, can work the camera wonderfully and manage this small group 6 people very well. It is worth knowing that you will be walking a bit. We had an elderly couple who had to sit and wait in part of the Roman forum as the rest climbed the hill for a wonderful view of the Forum and Rome. I recommend this tour to anyone interested in seeing the Colosseum and knowing what was it like and how they did it.
