This day trip to Rome by minivan is a great way to immerse yourself in the beauty and bustle of Rome for just one day.
The best way to see Rome.
We were picked up directly outside of our cruise ship and driven directly to Rome in a van which carried the whole of our family 7 people quite comfortably. Our guide, Simone, was friendly, knowledgeable and spoke excellent English.
We were visiting Rome in the heat of August and with young children, so it was important to us to make things as simple as we could. The tour was very convenient: there was no messing around with connections and rail timetables. Nor did we have lengthy walks while we navigated between sites. We returned the air-conditioned van and were at the next stop within minutes. Due to the size of the vehicle and his local knowledge, Simone was able to get much closer to the sites than any tour bus.
It was superb value at less than half the price of the official tour offered by the cruise ship. And while it cost much less, we had far greater control. Simone provided an itinerary but we were were free to tailor it. The proposed itinerary was due to end with a view of the Colosseum from the outside. We were able to move this to the start and visit the interior instead, although we did have to queue for an hour for tickets.
We also visited the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain, the Piazza Navona, stopped to view the forum and the Palatine Hill, ate at a local restaurant, then saw the Vatican and the Castel of Sant'Angelo. We could have seen more, but we chose to spend more time at the Colosseum and to return to our ship slightly early.
Sightseeing is difficult in the August heat. By around 3pm we had reached our limit. Simone then took us directly back to our ship. It was great to have this flexibility.
With so much to see we had to maximise our time in Rome. We felt that we did. It was a very convenient and comfortable way of seeing the sights if you stop at Civitavecchia on a cruise. Excellent value for money and highly recommended.
Very little communication. Our driver did not speak fluent English so there was somewhat of a language barrier. He did meet our requests as to the sites we wanted to see.
There were four of us... and... two of the four have been to Rome a number of times before.
I do not see myself or anyone in my group using this service in the future.
