What You Can Expect

Exclusive Catacombs After Closing and Bone Chapel Tour

Make your way to the Piazza Barberini, where you’ll meet your guide at 5:45pm for a 6pm departure to the first stop of the day, the Museum and Crypt of Capuchins. Hear the story behind the macabre “Bone Chapel,” which is built with the remains of around 4,000 monks, and discover the beliefs and traditions that led to the chapel’s creation.

After your time in the Bone Chapel, continue to the Catacombs of Santa Priscilla in a private, air-conditioned minibus. Among Rome’s extensive network of catacombs, this site is renowned for holding the oldest-known image of the Virgin Mary. The Catacombs of Santa Priscilla were the original resting place for the remains of seven Popes, and the 8 miles (13 km.) of tunnels are illuminated with bright frescoes.

This 2.5-hour catacomb tour offers the once-in-a-lifetime chance to explore a fascinating historic site after it’s closed to the public, so you can experience the catacombs as they once were: dim, quiet, and peaceful. After you re-emerge into the Roman streets, your tour will conclude at Piazza Barberini, close to public transport and centrally-located attractions.

Our wonderful guide, Rhian, first led our select group to the Museum and Crypt of Capuchins. She explained everything about the Capuchin order to us including their beliefs, whilst taking us through the myriad of rooms in the Museum and pointing to select items. On entering the Crypt we were blown away!
The Capuchins take reliquism to a whole differrent level with their vivid and creative displays of entire skeletons or multiple parts of skeletons. There are wall displays, chandeliers, fire places, etc. all fashioned out of bones! After you get over the shock of what you see and try to understand the reason behind the macabre yet prolific 'art' in front of you, you respect what the Capuchin order has tried to do.
Our next destination was the Catacombs of Santa Priscilla. A virtual 8 mile labyrinth of an underground burial system that was used many centuries ago. It is exciting to still see certain hollows that contain some remains or still haven't been excavated. But what takes one's breath away are the ancient frescos, graffiti and prayer rooms that can be found in secret passages of the catacombs. Rhian would light them up with a single source of light, adding to their mysterious aura. Her explanations of everything throughout our tour were exemplary.
This tour cannot be done by people with mobility issues or issues with confined, dark spaces or those with asthma or bronchal problems. It would be immensely hard also for families with very young children and seniors. Primarily because there is a lot of walking involved, sometimes on uneven, narrow and slippery surfaces especially in the catacombs, the places accessed are damp, dark and musty, plus the bone displays in the Capuchin Crypt can be terrifying for those with a weak disposition.
However, for those who have no health issues, are reasonably fit and open to an eye popping, unforgettable evening, away from teemig crowds-this tour is a million percent for you! I truly hope you're lucky to have Rhian leading you!

We weren't sure this was worth it, but we learned a great deal and had a fantastic time. The guide was wonderful. Furthermore the catacombs were closed to individual visits for the month so only those on tours were able to enter. Well planned, well executed, Highly recommended.

Loved our tour yesterday. Anna, our guide, was excellent. She had a wonderful grasp on how the sites we saw fit into both the Roman culture of the time and Biblical history. The Bone Chapel was particularly fascinating. Highly recommend this tour. Plus it is great way to escape the heat of Rome in the summer.

This tour was so interesting! Anna was wonderful and very informative. The Bone Chapel was unlike anything I had ever seen before. The history and artwork of the catacombs was interesting and the 16 degrees were a nice change from the hot Roman summer!

Easy to find meeting point. Bone Chapel Tour was quick walking distance from meeting point and very interesting. Our guide was very informative and answered all questions easily. The catacombs we visited were probably a 15 minute van ride away. That was such an interesting tour, had no idea! And to find out and see how much has not been explored was amazing. Nice doing an after closing tour, we only ran into one other after closing group. Our group was by ourselves for 99 of the time. Gave us more time to explore, ask questions etc. Highly recommend.

The guide was very friendly, informative and had the tour involved. It wasn't just someone out the front flapping their gums. It always amazes me the different ways Religion exploited the human body.
