What You Can Expect

Ponza Island Day Trip from Rome

Your day trip from Rome starts as you leave the city by air-conditioned vehicle for the drive to the coast, where you’ll hop aboard a ferry for the ride across the Tyrrhenian Sea to Ponza Island, located 21 miles (34 km) offshore. When you arrive, trade the ferry boat for a converted fishing boat, on which you’ll enjoy a cruise around the island with your captain, an island native, as well as other Italians visiting Ponza.

Hear interesting stories about the Italian island and its history between stops at some of its most beautiful coves and bays, where you’ll have lots of time to jump in the water for refreshing dips. A swimmer’s paradise, Ponza offers idyllic locations where you can swim and admire the way the water’s color varies between shades of blue and light green. Go snorkeling, if you wish (you may include equipment rental when booking), or just lay your towel on the boat deck to work on your tan.

You’ll enjoy lunch on the boat whipped up by your captain, who prepares a fresh pasta marinara (mariner’s style), served with wine and bottled water. Check out some of the many grottos (sea caves) sprinkled along the cliffs, the best known of which is Circe, named after the sorceress from Homer’s Odyssey. (The specific grottos you visit depend on the daily sea conditions.)

After the boat cruise, enjoy free time on the island to explore its narrow streets on your own, maybe shopping for gifts in one of the boutiques near the port, if you wish. When your time on Ponza ends, return to the mainland, and then hop in your tour vehicle for the drive back to Rome, where your day trip concludes.

Total travel time between boat and bus is 2.5 to 3 hours going, and the same for coming back.

Great break away from the museums and monuments across Rome, especially for our 4 kids 10-19. We had 4-5 opportunities to swim, including through caves, jumped off some 15ft high rocks, and just absorbed the gorgeous scenery. Spent an hour wandering and eating around the island's main town. Don't go if you get sea sick, and plan on being gone the entire 13 hours about 2.5 hours travel each way. Totally worth it to see another side of Italy. Our guides were enthusiastic, friendly.

Great tour ! amazing time. We did this with our two 6 year olds and they loved it. Make sure kids are good swimmers if you take them along, there are many stops around the island and some involve swimming through caves :- Amazing views, the water is like cristal. Great tour !

13h tour seemed daunting, but was well worth it and highlight of our trip. 5 stops to swim/snorkel, each location more beautiful than last. Water crystal clear w/magical scenery. Capt. led swim thru caves/grottos, then made a great fresh tuna pasta lunch. One hour free to explore the port. Amazing!

A GREAT tour - Kimberley is a friendly and well informed tour guide and the captain and mate highly skilled and agile with the boat! Awesome for snorkeling or just swimming, and boat comfortable for group of 30-35. Ponza's beauty blew us away, highly recommend!!

This was such a wonderful day trip from Rome! I would highly recommend this tour. The island of Ponza is absolutely gorgeous and totally untouched. It feels like a much more beautiful and authentic Capri. The tour gave you tons of time to swim and stopped at lots of different swimming locations around the island. It also gave us about an hour in town which was really fun and enough time to explore a little and have a drink. The beauty of the island really speaks for itself. Make sure to bring some food if you get hungry before 14:00. You do not eat until much later and could get hungry earlier.

Ponza is a hidden gem- less developed and touristy then capri . My tour was in mid June and it was very hot in Rome - Great way to beat the heat and to get a tan ! The tour guides were both lovely and kind. Beautiful! Bring your own towel , goggles, snacks. Beautiful place, must do !

My husband and I spent 10 days travelling Europe which included several tours and TONS of walking. We planned this Ponza excursion on our last day before returning home and it was the best end to a busy trip! We were able to relax and soak up the sun all day. Our guide, Kimberly was amazing! She was very informative about Ponza and was extremely attentive to all of our passengers. The captain prepared a delicious pasta lunch served with wine and we had expresso for dessert. Swimming through the grottos was incredible and we made some friends that we plan to keep in touch with. We highly recommend this trip to recoup before you return home! It's a nice change to the busy touristy areas around Italy.
