Overview

Climbing the Stairs to the Capitol, the Town Hall centre of Rome's first government, even now remains so. The Site is magical; the square with its buildings were restructured by Michelangelo in16C. It overlooks most of Rome. At its centre is the famous 2ndC bronze Equestrian Monument to Marcus Aurelius. Now a replica, you will see the original visiting the first Museum: this sculpture is still in its original gilt bronze. Poised under a glass pavilion especially built,all is full of light and colour emanating from the Roman sky.  Half way through the Museum, your guide will offer a coffee on the terrace of its cafe' which opens on a magnificent vista of Rome towards St Peter. You will return by the Lapidarium from where you will see the Roman Forum, its arches, street and buildings, and will descend on to Piazza Venenzia to the Trajan Forum and its Column. Your Tour of Ancient Rome begins on the Capitol Hill by the Equestrian statue of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, with a visit to the famous Capitoline Museums. Here is the city's superb collection of classical sculpture - the  oldest public collection in the world started in 1471 by a Papal Gift. 

Starting in the First Hall with an amazing marble statue by Bernini - Italy's greatest 17 C. sculptor worthy heir to Michelangelo -  of Pope Urban VIII, 17 C.frescoes and other sculptures will soon take you on to the main collection of Etruscan and Roman Sculptures:

Highlights:
The Spinario, the 1st B.C. bronze of a little boy plucking a thorn (spina) from his foot;
The Head of Brutus, circa 1st C.BC, one of the earliest bronze portraits known;
The Capitoline She Wolf, the 5thC  bronze statue of the She-Wolf which saved with her milk the twins Romulus and Remo, the first kings of Rome, and many other amazing statues, vases and marble reliefs. 

In the last Galleries you will find:
The Equestrian Bronze Statue of Marcus Aurelius; this 2nd C. Roman Bronze Statue portrays the great Emperor Philosopher and Warrior astride on his horse under an amazing 20th C. Glass Canopy built especially in the 1990s for it with few other statues, warmed under the sky of Rome full of light and colour; at night the stars are reflected in the gilt stride of the great Emperor.

Below are the ruins of The 6th century BC temple of Jupiter, the first and grandest Roman Temple on the Capitol and finally The Tabularium. From here it is possible to have a wonderful view over the Roman Forum, which your private tour guide will describe in detail.
