What You Can Expect

Rome Super Saver: Skip-the-Line Ancient Rome and Colosseum Walking Tour plus Frascati Wine Tasting Tour

Visit a wine estate in the Frascati region on this Super Saver

Skip the Line: Ancient Rome and Colosseum walking tour (3 hours)
Your day starts near the Colosseum, where you’ll skip the main entrance line and go straight inside with your priority-access ticket. With your guide, walk around the ancient amphitheater’s first two levels, listening to stories of gory gladiator battles, executions and other bloody events that were once held here. Look down on the floor of the arena as you walk around the perimeter, trying to picture the roaring crowds of 50,000 during the heyday of Ancient Rome.

Then exit the Colosseum and walk over to the Roman Forum, once the political and commercial center of the city. See sites like the House of the Vestal Virgins and Temple of Julius Caesar, and climb up Palatine Hill, one of the Seven Hills of Rome, for a view of the ruins and Circus Maximus, where chariot races once took place.

Your tour ends here. You have about two hours of free time to have lunch before the second half of your Super Saver begins (lunch is at your own expense).

Frascati wine tasting tour (3.5 hours)
In the afternoon, meet at a prearranged location to begin your excursion to the Frascati wine region outside of Rome. Board a coach for the picturesque drive through the hills of Castelli Romani, home to olive groves and centuries-old vineyards, on your way to the Principe Pallavicini estate, one of the most revered wineries in the Frascati region.

When you arrive, take a tour of the vineyards, historical buildings and gardens with your guide, who tells you about traditional Italian winemaking methods and how things have evolved over the many years of wine production in the region. Go inside the 3rd-century cellars, where wine is aged in acacia and French oak barrels, and then visit the estate’s 17th-century farmhouse for your wine-tasting session. With a sommelier, sample two red varietals, a white varietal and Pallavicini’s dessert wine, Stillato. Your tasting is accompanied by samples of tomato bruschetta and fresh-pressed olive oil.

After your wine tasting, your tour ends with the drive back to Rome.

Great value and one of the best possible tours. These were two separate tours that required that we travel by metro to meet the second tour for the wine tasting. This was not difficult but if youre unfamiliar with Romes Metro system it coulld cause concern. The knowledge of the guides for each tour was amazing. Claudia was our Colosseum and Forum guide. She is an archeologist and gave us an amazing, detailed understanding of all the sites,. Antonetta was our Wine tour guide. She was extremely knowlegable and the wine and total experience at the Palavincini Estate and Winery was exceptional. Well worth the money!

The tour was informative and thorough. The winery tour was great and the tasting... well. I didn't plan on bringing back 4 bottles of wine and a bottle of olive oil, but... here we are.

Note: this review is only pertinent to the Ancient Rome walking tour portion of the day, as we did not end up attending the Frascati Wine Tasting section. That was our personal choice and not due to anything with City Wonders etc.

Our tour guide was Marco and he was very informational and helpful! He had lots of good information to share and we really enjoyed him.

Be aware that the pace of this tour is fairly slow and it's a good bit of sitting/standing around as opposed to walking. I personally would have preferred LESS sitting and more walking but I may be in the minority there. It was a hot day so that may have played a part. I feel like I could have finished the Colosseum and the Forum area in about 1/2 the time it took the group, BUT then I wouldn't have had Marco, so overall it was still worth it. I just wanted to mention the pace for others that may read reviews.

Unbelievable trip and excellent value! We met the tour group outside the Colosseum in the morning and our guide was wonderful. She knew so much about the history and kept everyone interested even when some of the group wandered off, she managed to bring everyone back together! The headsets are a great way to still hear the whole commentary. We then had a good break for lunch and met up with another group for the wine tasting experience. The drive up to the hills was relaxing although a bit hot! as we learnt about wine before a little tour of the beautiful vineyard and cellars. We then headed to the tasting room for a fantastic immersive tasting experience of 4 delicious wines with tomato bread. An excellent tour and we'd thoroughly recommend it!

Such an interesting tour at the collosseum. Busy, but not like the Vatican. Our guide was great.
Then there was time to go for lunch and then head off to the wine tour. Nice close bus ride from Rome. Nice wines. Anna was our tour guide and gave us so many tips!

My husband and I loved this tour! It's definitely the way to see each of these sites and our guide was so incredible, I just wish I could remember how to spell his name. He was enthusiastic, insightful, funny, and answered all of our questions with detail. You could tell he loved his job and every person in our group was enjoying themselves immensely. The Colosseum was fascinating and the tour up Palatine Hill was gorgeous. It's almost surreal to be walking along streets and through doorways that old and with that much history around you. The House of the Vestal Virgins was pretty neat and standing beside where Julias Caesar took his last breath was surreal. The wine tour afterwards was nice but not the highlight. We'd done a full day Chianti wine region tour a couple days before and, in comparison, that one was by far superior, BUT...you did get a lot of wine and and the wine was delicious. The bathroom was out of order at the last winery we stopped at but thankfully the bus driver stopped at a gas station on the way home as Rome was an hour away. Book this tour for sure, you'll love it.

I purchased this tour for my father as a Father's Day gift and activity for both of us on our recent trip to Italy. It was a really special memory that combined some of our favorite things - travel and wine. Our guide for the Colosseum and Ancient Rome, Alessandro, was phenomenal. His passion and interest for the architecture and history of the Colosseum and Forum was unmatched and he made sure that we did not move on without having the opportunity to have our questions answered! He also did his best to make sure we were able to stop and fill water bottles and find places out of the sun to talk. It is absolutely worth it to skip the line with a group! It was already quite long at 10 a.m. when the tour started! After the Ancient Rome tour, we decided to take a taxi to the meeting place for the wine tour, we were able to have a quick lunch and met up with the tour group in a small park. Andy was our guide for the wine tasting and was extremely knowledgable about the region and pointed out some aqueducts and other vineyards on our way to Principe Pallavicini. The wine tour was in two parts, a stop at the vineyard to see the vines and some of the barrels, followed by the tasting which was held in the vineyard offices. The tasting was outstanding and we loved all four of the varietals provided by our sommelier! Time was given at the end to socialize, finish our wine, and purchase some bottles to take home. Andy also provided us with the website and address of a U.S. distributor who carries the wine in the event we decide to purchase more later on! This tour was a very special memory for my dad and I and I would recommend it to anyone planning a trip to Rome! Thank you!
