I hesitated booking at first, as this isn't one of the BIG attractions in Rome, but so glad I booked a tour! The greenery and open space in both Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este are a much needed break from built up Rome. The ruins at Hadrians' are amazing to see and imagine what it once was like. Villa d'Este is beyond beautiful and some of our best pictures and memories are from the fountains. We booked through Viator and I'd recommend them, though the pick up is a little confusing. Email them prior to confirm pick up and times.
Book this trip, we told everyone we met at other tours in Rome about it.
This tour was such an incredible surprise. Two Villas and so amazingly different. We were on this tour with Gray Line I Love Rome by Carrani Tours. This tour was captained by Claudia, whose descriptions and walking tours were amazing. She was clear and precise and made the morning an incredible experience. Hadrian's Villa is a huge complex 250 acres. The complex combined with Claudia's stories really fires the imagination. The orientation at the beginning overlooking a large model really helps put this complex in perspective. Once you start to walk around it, you are amazed at the scope of it all and are stunned by the ruins. Claudia's stories filled in the gaps and helped to understand the Emperor's vast achievements. The most beautiful part for me was Hadrian's pool named Canopus and an artificial grotto named Serapeum. An Egyptian city named Canopus was where a temple named Serapeum was dedicated to the god Serapis. The pool was surrounded by columns and arches, a few of which remain today. In stark contrast, the Villa d'Este is a beautiful museum almost eclipsed by the hundreds of fountains throughout the terraced gardens. Walking along the paths is magical, taking in the playful and majestic fountains including a stepped wall with green foliage and 100 fountains. The reflecting pools and huge fountains at one end of the gardens. Inside the museum are gorgeous frescoes. The entire tour was so much more meaningful with Claudia's commentary and description. Well done.
Make the time when in Rome to get onto this tour, it is worth it. Our guide was well informed. English spoken
Villa D'este is amazingly beautiful and Hadrian's villa is loaded with history. Great guide and highlight off our Rome visit. Bus driver dropped us off with plenty of time to add a visit to Villa Borghese.
Very interesting tour, the ruins of Emperor Hadrian and #39;s Villa Adriana were great. Almost 2000 year old arches and dome that are still standing. Villea DeEste garden and fountains were quite beautiful. Great tour guide too.
Very interesting and informative. Our guide not sure what her name was was very likable and had much to say about the archeological site. Her english wasnt perfect but very understandable. It was impossibly hard to get a hold of the I love Rome agency to make sure if we will be picked up. Had to call 5 different numbers and do a ton of research to get a hold of them. The pickups are only done within the Aurealian Walls they say, which location is not clearly defined.
The tour was very nice, but actually we should have had ear-phones to hear much better the explanations.
Quite an interesting tour, Hadrian's Villa and the city of Tívoli! The views and the landscape are out of this world! It was a smooth and pleasant drive by bus with plenty of time to have lunch and take pictures.
This tour delivered what was promised and the guide did a good job of keeping the large group together in spite of the constant rain.
The tour venues were fantastic. Could easily have spent twice as much time as the tour allowed, but the time was managed well and well spent. The ride was pretty short and quite comfortable. I was in a group with four languages spoken so two guides each handle two languages. They did a pretty good jog keeping everyone informed and moving, however, I would recommend a single language tour. That was not their issue. I had itinerary changes that limited by options.
The two sites visited were great! Much to see and learn. The guides provided info in three languages which they did well. Considering the time spent together five hours, however, more info could have been provided.
Our guide Eduardo was fantastic and very knowledgeable. I only give it 4 stars out of 5 because I felt it was slightly expensive.
quite a large group
the guide was knowledgeable but quite dry
altogether a nice experience
It was a good tour, although I feel that we could have spent less time in Hadrian's villa and more in Villa d'Este because it is gorgeous. For a half day tour, I would recommend just going to Villa d'Este and leave Hadrians Villa to another time. It would have been nice to visit the palace section in Hadrian's villa but we didn't have enough time. Our guide was excellent, unfortunately I can't remember her name.
The sights were magnificent. Tour bus was comfortable but P.A system was not easy to hear.
Our group's English speaking guide was not comfortable with his material, hesitant and too soft spoken for this role.
We enjoyed the tour. We had hotel pick up but not drop off so we had to pay to get back to our hotel which was near the Vatican Museum. So, why did we have to wait for our pick up? There were 2 guides and narrative was in 5 languages. We thought our tour was English only.
We enjoyed this trip but the guide was difficult to hear at times and would frequently speak with her back to us. If I had to do it again, I would have chosen a tour with earphones and the tour guide speaking into a mic. Both sites are really worth seeing though. We particularly enjoyed the garden at Villa d'Este.
time was tooooooooo short for this trip. no time was given to see the beautiful 5-6 floor garden and beautiful fountains. Not even 5 minutes to take pics. We were left on the top and told to come back in 20 minutes. 20 minutes were not even enough to go down, forget about coming uphill. So waste of money.
The tour guide, while nice, was not that informative. She repeated the same information over and over again. Also, I would have preferred more time at the gardens as that was more interesting and easier to explore without a guide.
The time at Villa Adriana was only 45 minutes which is ridiculous for such a major site. We only saw a very small section. There was too much talk and not enough seeing. There was enough time at Villa d'Este, but not enough to see any of Tivoli.
We called the tour company that morning and told them we were on our way. We called back a second time and told them we would be there but we were having trouble finding the address. We arrived four minutes late and we were told the tour had left. We asked why since they knew we had signed up and we had called. No one tried to call us to find out where we were. They could not wait four minutes when they knew we were coming? We did another one of their tours. The woman checked her list three times to make sure everyone was there and the tour left 15 minutes late. They offered us another tour that they said was more expensive. We took it but it was actually much less expensive than the one we had signed up for. I would recommend finding another company.
