What You Can Expect

Rotorua Maori Hangi Dinner and Performance

Rotorua Maori Hangi Dinner and Performance

After hotel pickup, you’ll travel by air-conditioned coach to Tamaki Maori Village, situated deep within the forest about 15 minutes from Rotorua. En route, your guide prepares you with information in anticipation of an authentic Maori hangi dinner, and shares protocol for visiting your indigenous hosts at the marae.

Hear an eerie cry of welcome before you enter, and experience the powhiri (welcome ceremony) by a proud descendent of New Zealand’s ancient warriors. Pass crackling open fires and traditional whare (houses), and listen to classic instruments as you observe a re-enactment of daily activities and traditional arts and crafts typical of a pre-European Maori village.

In the wharenui (meeting house), see haka song and dance in a powerful performance by a Rangiatea cultural  group. When it’s time for the hangi feast, dig into slow-cooked meat and vegetables roasted in underground earthen ovens.

Your 3.5-hour tour ends drop-off at your hotel in Rotorua.

An absolute must do while in Rotorua! The bus picked us up at our hostel and immediately began telling us how we as a tribe would be greeted by Maori elders and the protocol to follow. We were then taken in the village to learn more about Maori customs, weapons, games, and watch our tribesmen learn the Haka. We were entertained by beautiful Maori song and dance before a sumptuous feast with more song and celebration. It was a wonderful evening spent learning about a new culture with our warm, generous hosts.

Wonderful experience that should be on everyone's list when visiting Rotorua. The performers were very talented and informed on Maori culture. I loved the little areas that told a little bit more of history, from the tattoo culture to the games played by warriors. Additionally, the Hangi was delicious!

Although quiet a cool night the villagers and staff were extremely friendly and answered all questions asked. This is my second time to this Hangi and throughly enjoyed the Esperance the second time as much as my first. Performance and food were exceptional - would recommend to others.
The ride home should not be missed either - not going to tell you as it would spoil it....

There is personal interaction with the Maori people and you can tell that they are passionate to teach others about their culture and heritage. They almost get you sucked into all that they have to offer short informative classes, food, and language. Everyone there also has a great sense of humor to keep you entertained while absorbing all the information. I would strongly recommend that everyone stops by!
