Rotorua to Auckland via Waitomo Glowworm Caves One-Way Tour

Rotorua to Auckland via Waitomo Glowworm Caves One-Way Tour

First discovered in 1887, the Waitomo Caves rank among New Zealand’s most popular natural attractions. You’ll explore the caves on a guided 45-minute tour during this one-way trip from Rotorua to Auckland.

After morning pickup from your hotel, get settled in a luxury coach for the journey north. En route, you’re driven past the picturesque Mamaku Ranges and through the arboreal tunnel of Fitzgerald Glade. Click away at the countryside views as you listen to onboard commentary about the sights.

Upon reaching the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, follow your guide down into the underground chambers where stalagmites, stalactites and other limestone rock formations decorate the otherworldly cavern walls. A boat ride takes you deeper into the Glowworm Grotto to see the tiny radiant lights emitted by thousands of glowworms hanging from their silk threads.

Afterward, enjoy free time at the Waitomo Caves Visitor Centre or relax in a serene setting under the trees. Take a break for a buffet lunch (if option selected), or purchase your own café-style meal (own expense).

Then continue onward by coach toward Auckland. Pass through the ‘Bridge City’ of Hamilton and the dairy capital of Waikato before arriving in the 'City of Sails' by mid-afternoon. Your tour concludes here with hotel drop-off.

Good trip, some nice stops besides the cave, the cave itself is worth of money paid, - so highly recommended!

A good way to travel from Rotorua to Auckland, with an interesting stop at the very cool caves which would otherwise be quite inaccessible. Driver was fun, knew alot about the area and was responsive to the group.

The Caves are very interesting., but boat riding time was very short. Tour guide was very generous and knowledgeable.

The tour of the cave was great. Seeing the Waitomo Gloworms is a must if you are in NZ. I can't say the same for Intercity Tours that operates this tour. Had several tours with Intercity in NZ. Their drivers are surly and while they will pick you up at your hotel, they don't tell you they don't drop off at your hotel. So plan for an additional taxi ride.

Photography at selected locations should be allowed, otherwise a great tour.

2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better June 2010

The bus driver didn't pick us up from the hotel, it was at a centre located in Rotorua. The tour we booked said we would be picked up. Waitomo Glowworm tour was okay but the time expended there was too short for the price we paid. Finally when we arrived in Auckland the bus stopped at their central offices, and again they didn't leave us at our hotel, again very close to their offices.
