This place is SOOOOO cool! You can actually walk the routes a bit faster than what the park advises, so definitely take full advantage to go see everything. You are literally looking pits and pools of mud, dirt and natural gases - but it was way more fascinating than I ever expected. As a glam girl that doesn't love the outdoors I did this for my husband, who geeks out on science, I loved every minute of it and would definitely go back to see it all again.
It was well worth the visit as the various thermal activities along the route provide different sights and interest. The route was pretty easy to walk hence even my 80 year old mother was able to navigate. Surprisingly, the air quality was pretty decent with not much of sulphur smell, much better than some of the volcanic areas I visited before. However, Lady Knox Geyser was not as magnificent as I envisaged. Overall, it was a good item on the itinerary for NZ North Island visit.
It was a wonderful experience. With so many parks on offer, it was difficult to know which to visit, but Wai-a-Topu filled all our needs. It was a fascinating park and the ranger who gave us a talk was amazing. Sara was personable and one of the most knowledgeable guides we have come across, and she shared it all in an entertaining and interesting fashion. thoroughly recommend a visit.
We visited here because of its fame in New Zealand and it was on our drive from Rotorua to National Park to do the Tongariro Crossing. Honestly it took us only about 35 minutes to go through the whole park. Expect lots of people to be there. It is worth a stop if driving by but not worth making a special trip just to see it.
