What You Can Expect

Lapland Northern Lights Adventure from Rovaniemi Including Sausages over Campfire

Go in search of the magnificent Aurora Borealis in Lapland's wilderness

Dress warmly and travel independently to the start point in central Rovaniemi, or enjoy a pickup from one of two hotels outside town.

Settle into a comfortable coach or minivan with your guide, and travel north into the snowy wilds of the Arctic Circle.

Along the way, listen to intriguing facts about the natural phenomenon known as the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis. Discover how the luminous ribbons of light are triggered by electrically charged particles hitting the Earth’s atmosphere and why they only occur in the northern latitudes.

Sightings can never be guaranteed as the lights are dependent on weather and chance. However, your expert guide will use their local knowledge to find the prime potential viewpoints, maximising your chances of witnessing the lights.

After approximately an hour, leave the main road to travel further into the snow-covered countryside. Hop out of your vehicle and walk to the frozen Ounasjoki River, considered a great location for sightings.

Absorb the stillness around you, and scan the dark skies as your guide builds a crackling log fire. Hear stories about the lights and Lapland’s countryside as you enjoy delicious sausages and a hot drink.

Watch for the lights, and with luck, catch a display of the glittering green, blue and yellow veils in the sky.

Next, visit Poro-Pekan Pirtti, a little museum set in a traditional weatherboard cottage. Meet the amiable owners, whose family built the house in 1894 and stroll through the rustic rooms to view the displays of antique Lapland artifacts and curios.

Later, drive back to Rovaniemi. Your trip concludes with a drop-off at the original departure point.

Please note: the order of activities as described above may alter on the day of your tour depending on weather conditions, daylight hours and other seasonal factors. Due to the dependence on the weather conditions, seeing the Northern Lights is not always guaranteed.

Obviously there is no guarantee on seeing the lights and in this instance we did not. I think there needs to be more information on the agenda of the itineary - we had 7 year old girls with us and it was way too long for them - if I had known the full agenda beforehand we would have organised baby sitters for them.
