What To Expect

Your tour to two of Utah’s most fascinating geological destinations starts with pickup from hotels in downtown Salt Lake City for the drive to the Kennecott Copper Mine, one of the only man-made structures on Earth that can supposedly be spotted from space.

With your guide, you’ll journey into the Oquirrh Mountains to see mining operations such as waste-rock repositories and large trucks that carry heavy loads. From an overlook at 9,000 feet elevation, you can view the mine while learning about its century-old history, from its origins as a small company to its current status as a major copper supplier and one of Utah’s biggest private businesses.

Next, leave the copper mine for Great Salt Lake, aka the Dead Sea of the United States. Hear from your guide about how the lake—the largest saltwater lake in the western hemisphere—was once part of ancient Lake Bonneville, a large body of water from the Ice Age. At Saltair Resort on Salt Lake’s south shore, you can watch out of some of the 250-plus species of local birds. Your tour then ends with return to the city for hotel drop-off.

I learned so much about open pit mining. The ride up to the viewpoint was a little scary, but well worth it. Our guide was pleasant and knowledgeable. The Great Salt Lake is interesting, and it was fun to wade in the water to get my bragging rights.
The Copper Mine and Salt Lake...
Ellen K, Jul 2017
The Copper Mine and Salt Lake themselves were very cool destinations, but our actual tour guide, Michael, had such a monotone voice, that he made even the most interesting fact or statistic seem boring. That was the unfortunate reality of this 5-1/2 hour tour. On top of this, we weren't told beforehand that we would have an opportunity to go into the Lake, so none of us in our group brought a bathing suit. Finally, the tour info on Viator stated the tour ended at 6:30pm, but we were told when we actually showed up for the tour that it ended at 7:30pm. We did in fact get back by 7:30pm, but it's a good thing we didn't have anything planned for later that evening. All in all, I wouldn't recommend this tour. It felt very amateur, and considering the 69 cost per person, I was expecting a much nicer experienced and more engaging tour guide.

This was a very interesting and amazing experience. Logistics were a bit confusing, but everything worked out well. Both guides one for the lake and one for the mine were very knowledgeable.

Good tour. I booked it in the morning of the event. Got a call with details of the pickup. Everything was good and as promised. The only downside is that on the second part of the tour the mine tour drivrs microfon wasnt loud enough, so we missed evrything he was telling us about. He tied to turn the volume up, still didnt help. Otherwise - worth the money

The tour is amazing! But be prepared with the long journey on the van.

Great trip, with the host / driver being very knowledgeable on the areas we covered and able to put it over in an interesting and understandable way. He was very enthusiastic and the use of his arms enhanced the talk especially when driving! The views of mine and from this lookout over the Salt Lake area were spectacular as was the drive to and from this point. Excellent trip, and I recommend you do it!

Both tour guides were fantastic! Friendly and knowledgeable. The pick up at and return to my hotel were on time and flawless. Both the Salt Lake and Mine were interesting. The views, especially up to the mine overlook, were spectacular. I would recommend this tour to anyone!

The tour is good overall. Tour guides are informative and helpful, and both spots are beautiful. However, it would be better if there are more free time at the Great Salt Lake.

Beth W, Jun 2016
This tour is a whole lot of riding in a van. There is a short stop at the salt flats and another short stop at the lake. I don't know if there is a better place to visit the lake, but where we went the shore was a bunch of black gunk that your foot sunk into up to your ankles. It was not something we wanted to wade into and we didn't really have time anyway. The guide said we could swim if we wanted to, but we didn't bring bathing suits as we did not know we would have the opportunity to actually go into the water. After seeing the gunk, and given the very short time we were there, however, I'm glad we didn't plan to swim. After the lake, we rode in the van up the mountain. Yes it is a very bumpy ride but not as bad as our guide made it out to be - he kept talking about people getting sick. The view from the top is spectacular. However, you don't actually get to go anywhere near the mine, not even the gift shop. All of that was OK, but the ride back to SLC was long and boring. Our guide rambled on about the urban growth in the SLC area and had a very negative attitude about it. We can now check those two things off our bucket lists, but I wouldn't really recommend this tour.

Loved the commentary, the drive up and the sheer beauty once you're up 9000ft. A definite must do and see, would love to spend more time around the lake.

The sites were breath taking, but the guide was too energetic, not well organized, repeated things too many times, and became very annoying to listen to.

Great combination trip to see both attractions. Had time to wade in the Great Salt Lake. Guide showed us the brine shrimp in the Lake. Another guide took us to the top of the mountain, over very rough terrain, and we enjoyed looking down at the copper mine.

Danny D, Oct 2015
It did not exceed with my expectation. The tour was so poor. Especially, the Copper Mine I thought we would be taken to the company, but go to the mountain with the tough and dangerous road. I recommended that do not take this tour. You would be better rent a car and go by yourself.

The tour guide provided Interesting information on the trip. Do not take if you get car sick. The drive to the mine has many twists and turns.

Dan B, Sep 2015
The guide/driver was very knowledgible about the area and provided many interesting and historical facts along the way to the mine. The tour of the Salt Lake was equally as interesting. Well worth the trip to see both of these landmarks.

The tour was good in overall, but we spent more time inside the van than outside. Our guide was excellent with huge knowledge about the area.
