Overview

Combine a Kennecott Copper Mine visit with a visit to Great Salt Lake on this interesting excursion from Salt Lake City that introduces you to some of Utah's natural resources. With a guide, you’ll view the Kennecott mine, one of the largest excavation and open-pit copper mines in the world from a picturesque mountain overlook before heading to the western hemisphere’s biggest saltwater lake, where you’ll learn about its geological history and watch for birds.
  • Discover two Utah treasures, one natural and one man-made, on this tour from Salt Lake City
  • Explore the world’s largest excavation copper mine with your expert guide
  • Visit the Great Salt Lake, the largest saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere
  • Hotel pickup and drop-off included from downtown hotels only
Your tour to two of Utah’s most fascinating geological destinations starts with pickup from hotels in downtown Salt Lake City for the drive to the Kennecott Copper Mine, one of the only man-made structures on Earth that can supposedly be spotted from space.

With your guide, you’ll journey into the Oquirrh Mountains to see mining operations such as waste-rock repositories and large trucks that carry heavy loads. From an overlook at 9,000 feet elevation, you can view the mine while learning about its century-old history, from its origins as a small company to its current status as a major copper supplier and one of Utah’s biggest private businesses.

Next, leave the copper mine for Great Salt Lake, aka the Dead Sea of the United States. Hear from your guide about how the lake—the largest saltwater lake in the western hemisphere—was once part of ancient Lake Bonneville, a large body of water from the Ice Age. At Saltair Resort on Salt Lake’s south shore, you can watch out of some of the 250-plus species of local birds. Your tour then ends with return to the city for hotel drop-off.

I learned so much about open pit mining. The ride up to the viewpoint was a little scary, but well worth it. Our guide was pleasant and knowledgeable. The Great Salt Lake is interesting, and it was fun to wade in the water to get my bragging rights.

The Copper Mine and Salt Lake...

The Copper Mine and Salt Lake themselves were very cool destinations, but our actual tour guide, Michael, had such a monotone voice, that he made even the most interesting fact or statistic seem boring. That was the unfortunate reality of this 5-1/2 hour tour. On top of this, we weren't told beforehand that we would have an opportunity to go into the Lake, so none of us in our group brought a bathing suit. Finally, the tour info on Viator stated the tour ended at 6:30pm, but we were told when we actually showed up for the tour that it ended at 7:30pm. We did in fact get back by 7:30pm, but it's a good thing we didn't have anything planned for later that evening. All in all, I wouldn't recommend this tour. It felt very amateur, and considering the 69 cost per person, I was expecting a much nicer experienced and more engaging tour guide.

This was a very interesting and amazing experience. Logistics were a bit confusing, but everything worked out well. Both guides one for the lake and one for the mine were very knowledgeable.

Good tour. I booked it in the morning of the event. Got a call with details of the pickup. Everything was good and as promised. The only downside is that on the second part of the tour the mine tour drivrs microfon wasnt loud enough, so we missed evrything he was telling us about. He tied to turn the volume up, still didnt help. Otherwise - worth the money

Great trip, with the host / driver being very knowledgeable on the areas we covered and able to put it over in an interesting and understandable way. He was very enthusiastic and the use of his arms enhanced the talk especially when driving! The views of mine and from this lookout over the Salt Lake area were spectacular as was the drive to and from this point. Excellent trip, and I recommend you do it!
