What You Can Expect

4-Night Christmas Package in Salzburg Including Mozarteum Concert and Horse-Drawn Sleigh Ride

Visit Salzburg's world-famous Christmas Markets at leisure!

Your 5-day package will begin on December 23 with check-in at your 4-star hotel, located near big-name sites like Salzburg Dom and Mirabellplatz. Enjoy four nights of accommodations and a Salzburg welcome package in your room.

Soak up plenty of time to tour the vibrant city of Salzburg on your own. Roam the medieval squares, UNESCO-listed Old Town and local restaurants and cafes. Your package includes a lavish Christmas Eve feast and a musical concert at the Mozarteum on Christmas Day. Then, top off your trip on Boxing Day with a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the wintry Austrian landscape.

Itinerary

Day 1: December 23
Check in to your Salzburg hotel in the early afternoon, and spend the rest of your day in the romantic Austrian city independently. Perhaps visit its outdoor ice rink or soak up the festive atmosphere with a warming hot chocolate inside one of the city’s legendary cafés (own expense).

Overnight: 4-star Hotel NH Salzburg City, Hotel Am Mirabellplatz, Radisson Blu or similar

Day 2: December 24, Christmas Eve (B)
After a sumptuous breakfast at your hotel, your Christmas Eve is free for you to do as much or as little as you wish. The famous Salzburg Christmas Markets are open from 9am - 3pm, so perhaps take a wander around the stalls, enjoying the aromas of mulled wine and gingerbread while browsing for last-minute gifts or gourmet food.

Return to your hotel in the evening for your Christmas dinner. Austrians celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve rather than on Christmas Day itself, so get ready for a lavish feast! Courses served at each hotel vary, but expect a festive meal featuring hearty Austrian specialties like cheese fondue, ham and sausages with sauerkraut (cabbage). If your hotel does not offer a Christmas dinner, then head to Braurestaurant Imlauer – a rustic brewery-restaurant in the center of town. Drinks (in your hotel or at the Braurestaurant Imlauer) are at your own expense.

Sample Menu: Braurestaurant Imlauer
  • Salmon and trout roll on a bed of marinated tomatoes
  • Borscht (beetroot soup) garnished with creamed horseradish
  • Pan-fried seabream with a ragout of leeks, or beef fillet with root vegetables and truffle mash potatoes
  • Cherry compote and crushed ice
Overnight: 4-star Hotel NH Salzburg City, Hotel Am Mirabellplatz, Radisson Blu or similar

Day 3: December 25, Christmas Day (B)
Enjoy breakfast and then spend your day at leisure. While many of the city’s shops are closed, the main Salzburg sites are free from crowds, meaning it’s perfect for a leisurely stroll around the Altstadt. Maybe take a walk around its medieval squares and pose for photos in front of Salzburg Dom, the impressive city cathedral.

Many cafés are open, so lunch and dinner can be enjoyed at your own expense in town. In the late afternoon, head to the Mozarteum (or Mozart-Wohnhaus) to enjoy its renowned Christmas concert, performed by students at the University of Music and Dramatic Arts. Take a seat inside the building’s Wiener Saal – a prestigious Salzburg concert venue – and relax while listening to the 3-hour classical music performance.

Overnight: 4-star Hotel NH Salzburg City, Hotel Am Mirabellplatz, Radisson Blu or similar

Day 4: December 26, Boxing Day (B)
After breakfast, walk to Mirabellplatz in the center of town, and then board your luxury coach to travel to the mountains just outside the city. In one of the pretty mountain villages, swap your mode of transport for a beautiful horse-drawn sleigh, and travel along the Salzach River valley, passing through many of Austria’s picture-perfect ski resorts. Head through Schladming, the town that hosted the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, and then ascend the Steirische Ramsau mountain to visit Dachstein Glacier.

Spend time at leisure in one of the mountain villages to explore and enjoy lunch in one of the local inns (own expense). Then, return to Salzburg, where your day trip finishes in the early evening. Enjoy dinner in your hotel or in town at your own expense.

Overnight: 4-star Hotel NH Salzburg City, Hotel Am Mirabellplatz, Radisson Blu or similar

Day 5: December 27 (B)
Check out of your hotel after breakfast, finishing your 4-night Christmas package in central Salzburg.

Amazing! fantastic! Wonderful! Accommodation was a bit old and poky but other parts of the same hotel seemed more modern and up to date. The sleigh ride had no snow but we went off on wheeled carts and the views were spectacular. It was still worth going! Highly recommend this to people wanting a fairytale Christmas.

The concert was very good with a nice evening of music and it was close to our hotel for easy walking. We enjoyed the visit to the Alps although there was no snow so the sleigh ride turned into a wagon ride, but that's the chance one takes. It was still a joy to be in the grandeur of the mountains around you.
