Itinerary

The Sound of Music Film Locations in Salzburg:

  • Mirabell Gardens - The Mirabell Gardens were laid out in the 18th century. Maria and the children were seen dancing around the statue of Pegasus, the winged horse, and throughout the gardens singing 'Do-Re-Mi.'
  • Leopoldskron Castle - The front side of the castle was used as the Trapp family home, the children were boating on the Leopoldskron Lake and fell into the water. The Venetian room was copied from the castle and used as the ballroom.
  • Hellbrunn Castle - This hunting castle was built in the early 17th century by Prince-Archbishop Markus Sittikus. In the gardens the glass pavillion was reconstructed for the pleasure of those fans still returning after 30 years.
  • Nonnberg Abbey - Nonnberg Abbey is the oldest convent in the German speaking part of Europe. Maria was a novice there. The baron and Maria were married here in 1927. The scenes for the movie made here include the opening with the nuns going to Mass and Maria coming too late.
  • St Gilgen and Lake Wolfgang - Scenery shown at the beginning of the movie was filmed at Lake Fuschl on the way to St Gilgen. Like the Mozart family, visitors from all over the world appreciate the beautiful village in the Salzkammergut.
  • Wedding Church Mondsee - Mondsee Cathedral was used as the location for Maria and the Baron's wedding in the film.

Please note: The coach will visit all film locations listed above. You will get off the bus at Leopoldskron Castle, Hellbrunn Castle, St Gilgen and Lake Wolfgang and Mondsee.

As a fan of the movie and having watched it countless times, I decided that a stopover in Salzburg was an absolute must during our European tour. Almost missed the tour as the departure point in tour info was Tour departs from the bus terminal at Mirabellplatz in front of St. Andrew's Church and we were there 30 minutes before so that we would not miss it. The bus terminal, however, was on the side of the church, not in front of and the tour bus was hidden behind large kiosks at the terminal therefore we could not see the bus. We eventually found the bus just as it was about to depart. Tour guide, Wolfgang, made tour interesting and we enjoyed it very much to sing along with the famous songs.

What a fun tour!! Christina did an awesome job showing us fun sites and sharing local tidbits about the filming of the Sound of Music in Austria. Saw the famous gazebo, large home on the lake, and toured the lake district outside Salzburg which is so gorgeous. Fun sing alongs and great music too.! Easy meet up location in central Salzburg as we walked to it from our hotel. Nice clean comfortable buses too.

This was one of two scheduled tours I booked for Wife and I, on a month - long, self- planned trip to Vienna / Salzburg/ Innsbruck / Paris / and back to Vienna. Well done and balanced tour, with excellent Staff. It was worth it (not T- trap).

Our tour was not only informative but fun!! Our tour guide pointed out many sights from the movie and a few we got to see in person but the best part was that he was so knowledgeable and made us laugh throughout the whole 4 hour trip! I would recommend this tour to anyone visiting Salzburg. It is a great way to see the city itself and learn the culture as well as being submerged into the movie!! Thank you for a wonderful experience!

Its pure fun. The tour leaders really showed enthusiasm and made it fun. Your fellow travelers really love the movie as much as you do. So sing to your hearts content and make those hills come alive. Sorry that some of the Hollywood illusion will be revealed but dont let that deter you.
