Learn to steer and balance a stand-up paddleboard with a 1.5-hour lesson at La Jolla Shores, one of San Diego’s most scenic beaches. Paddle alongside your instructor and head out across La Jolla’s flat, calm water, then watch for the sea lions and dolphins that are drawn to the sheltered cove. Practice reading the ocean currents and work on perfecting your stance as you take in sweeping views of the California coast from the deck of a stand-up paddleboard.
Your lesson takes place in the lovely setting of La Jolla Shores, one of the best beaches in the northern San Diego area. You will begin with an introduction to stand-up paddleboarding (also known as stand-up paddle surfing) to get a good grasp of the basic paddling principles. Then you'll start the in-water portion of your lesson close to shore on the flat water.
You'll cover topics of surf sense, ocean awareness, board handling and the float plan. You will learn the proper stance, how to balance, how to get up, efficient paddling techniques, steering and how to turn around quickly. Once you have your balance, you’ll realize that stand-up paddling is a very pleasant way to tour the ocean.
This paddleboarding location is in one of the most idyllic spots on the west coast; La Jolla Cove and ecological preserve is a scenic and environmentally protected aquatic park with clear water and sweeping views of cliffs and caves. Keep your eyes open for the occasional sea lion, dolphin, garibaldi or sea bass.
Please note: SUP instructors are certified in CPR, first aid and lifesaving and the surf school is permitted by the City of San Diego.
