Fantastic 3 day California Pacific Coastal Trip
Kieran D
, Oct 2018
Just yesterday we completed our 3 day Pacific Coastal trip & it really was something special. We could not have had a better guide & driver. Kelly was not just exceptional in her duties but she was at all times informative, caring and so helpful seeing to all of our needs as an Irish couple taking such a trip for the first time. The coach had plenty of room and was very comfortable. The two overnight stays were first rate and both The Spin Drift Inn in Monterey & The Rigdon House in Cambria are indeed superior lodgings. The scenery & the views all along the route were quite simply spectacular.Kelly is clearly a most friendly & decent young lady and overall a lovely, thoughtful and kind person. My wife Noeleen & I couldn’t recommend her & the 3 day trip down this amazing coast highly enough - definitely a 10 out of 10 👌👏🏻Thanks so much Kelly & Viator for 3 wonderful days in California that neither of us will ever forget 👍😊Kieran

My husband and I had a fantastic tour down the coast of California. Adam, our guide, was very friendly and knowledgeable. The scenery was beautiful and we got to see unexpected sights like a redwood forest and elephant seals nursing their babies. I would highly recommend this tour.

The road journey was well planned...
Diana Ashley K

The road journey was well planned and arranged. Tour guide took the extra effort to help us with the check-ins. Only set back is most of the small towns that we stopped over could have slightly more than 1hr to explore. Half of the time we need to be checking o watches to make sure we don't miss our time. Lucky to book the tour during winter that from a group tour became a private tour. Overall everything was great, the hotel accommodations were pleasant and decent. Only one suggestion, for the train ride from Santa Barbara to LA, the tour guide should have booked the train tickets online in advance and reserve the business class seat, considering that we paid premium for the entire tour. We had unreserved seats and was forced to stand till like 3 stops later and struggled fighting for luggage spots with others. And, if possible to have food arrangement or at least have arrangements with certain number of restaurants to give us extra discount when dine in using the tour promo code?

TOUR OPERATOR COMMENT: Thank you for your feedback. Regarding the issues at the train station - Please note, at the end of our trips, we arrange a ticket for our guests at the Santa Barbara train station and in 8 years of operating, we've never had an issue getting our guests on the train. We do not offer the "business class" ticket unless it's a special request because the train is really quite nice and not typically busy. During this particular departure, the catastrophic mudslides occurred, which killed 13 people and created chaos in the greater Santa Barbara area. The mudslide destroyed the 10-lane Highway 101, a main vein out of Santa Barbara. Due to this unforeseen circumstance, the train station was packed full and the trains were extraordinarily hard to get onto. Clearly, had we known that this sort of natural disaster would occur creating such dire consequences, we would have figured out a way to reserve the guests tickets in advance. We hope future guests will be understanding that this is not a typical circumstance.

Thoroughly enjoyable scenery and sights, good accommodation etc. However the guide Mark did not give us much information about the areas we were travelling through which was disappointing.. Also it was a 12 seat bus and although he had a strong clear voice, we could not hear him down the back of the bus so therefore missed out on things. We suggested using a microphone as other guides do.

We were very happy with the quality of the tour we went on and we were given an excellent insight to all of the main points on the coast road. We found the stopover points to be well timed and the places that we visited of high quality. We found Mark our guide to be exceptionally helpful and knowledgeable. He was extremely courteous and very well informed. We highly recommend this tour to any prospective person who wants to see the coast road without driving themselves. Mark , Our driver, chauffeur and all you could ask in a guide was exceptional. My wife and I were the only ones on the tour, which made it extra special and allowed us to stop longer where we wanted and enjoy the moment..We would arrive at our destination and go on the tour arranged or just simply enjoy the surroundings and when we checked into our hotel , Mark had already had our bags taken to our room. Mark made us feel very welcome from the very first morning to the last day arranging our bags on the train to La. The only thing would be the Hotel in Camberia , which was very nice and comfortable, was a little away from restaurants , when you don't have transport. But all in all a very enjoyable trip and again many thanks to Mark for all the stories and been such a superb host. Niall and patricia

The drive was very smooth as Mark Olson did a very good job in driving but he is not an experienced tour guide in explaining about interesting places.Stay in Cambria Blue Bird Inn not pleasent as the breakfast starts at 7.30 AM Very cold and merely two items. There is no Coffee maker in the room and when requested i was given a one that was not working . All three days one person was occupying the seat next to the driver which is a good position for taking photographs. The driver should have atleast noted this and should have advised the occupants to rotate the seats.

This was the high light of our trip. We were looking forward so much to it and we were not disappointed We did this trip in March 2017 as we wanted a relaxed trip with a small group and not drive ourselves We'll we hit the jackpot We had a private tour with Kelly and she was amazing nothing was a trouble and plenty of spare time to enjoy Unfortunately we couldn't go by Big Sur due to landslides but that didn't matter as we saw so much If you can afford the superior accommodation I can thoroughly recommend it, especially Spin Drift in Monterey a boutique hotel which is a little treasure not to be missed What more can I say if you have the time this is definitely a trip not to be missed

This 3-day Tour was a 30th wedding...
MaTeresa_H
, Feb 2017
This 3-day Tour was a 30th wedding anniversary gift for my husband and myself, and it was the best gift ever. As it turned out we were the only ones who booked the tour for Jan. 29-31, and it was like we had booked an exclusive tour for ourselves. This meant a more relaxed schedule for us and more flexibility for stops and more opportunities for photos. Kelly was a punctual guide from the moment she picked us at 9am at our hotel in San Francisco. She was very conscientious in giving us the details of the overall tour itself, and the itinerary for each day. Kelly was likewise a very good driver and very knowledgeable about the sights along the Pacific coastline along which our tour ran. We stopped to be awed by the hardy surfers in Santa Cruz braving the winter cold waters of the Pacific Ocean, though Kelly warned us about the dangers that sudden surf surges could cause. We stopped at a quaint roadside store to get some coffee - quite good by the way - and were surprised to learn that there were small pockets of civilization in the US which didn't have indoor plumbing! After that we spent the good part of an hour strolling around Santa Cruz and browsing the bookshelves of a real bookstore - more books rather than novelty items. Next stop was Monterey where we marveled at the magnificent creatures of the deep, including quite a creepy octopus. I was fascinated by the corals and the fishes and even the jelly fishes. Watching these creatures gliding gracefully in the aquariums in all their magnificent colors was mesmerizing. And the food in the cafeteria was tasty too. Nice! We loved the vibe of Monterey. It was very dynamic and young and quite hip. Day 2 had us driving towards Carmel via the 17-mile route to Pebble Beach. The houses were quite awesome in that part of the world. We got a glimpse of the Big Sur, and enough time to look around, take some pictures, and admire the dramatic meeting of sea, sky, rocks, and mountain. Because of the storms in the previous week, we had to turn back because of road closures on 101. Carmel itself was pretty, almost like the postcard version of a real town. In this case it was truly a really lovely part of the world. I enjoyed looking at the shops which offered items beyond the usual tourist souvenirs. I bought some lovely stationery from a specialty store and a Christmas trinket from a Christmas store. We also looked at the different posters of houses for sale posted at the window of the realty agents. Husband and I were quite amused at the prices at which these houses were offered. They were not for the faint of heart and for the slim of pocketbook. The afternoon part of this day was spent in the Hearst Castle, doing a tour of the cottages and the kitchen. Again we had the luck of the draw whe it came to the guide. He was a master storyteller who combined history and romance to the usual description of house details and idiosyncracy. We would gladly visit this castle again just to hear more about the life of the Hearst family. Finally we spent the night in Cambria, very charming with stores that had names like Love Me 2 Times Thrift Shop and a restaurant which went by the name The Sow's Ear. That's where we had a delicious dinner and felt quite young again amid a clientele who mostly looked comfortably retired. Next morning, we had coffee and Danish at Solvang. Solvang is another lovely town, with a hint of European. We ended this part of the tour in Santa Barbara where we bid a fond goodbye to Kelly. Santa Barbara was enjoying almost tropical weather, allowing us to shed the winter layers of our wardrobe for the day. The train station itself looked like a movie set, but it was a real train station and the Amtrak train which rolled in almost on the dot at 2 pm was a real train. A train ride was a very relaxing and ultra-comfortable way to get to Los Angeles to the end of our tour. We definitely can recommend this tour to other people. My husband and I enjoyed every minute of the tour, most specially because we had it on an exclusive basis. We will always remember our 30th wedding anniversary with gladness, made memorable by these three days of meandering along the Pacific coastline from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

Loved this tour! I wanted a trip down the coast from San Francisco that included Big Sur and Hearst Castle, and I did not want to drive it myself. Adam was a very informative guide, and the small group of 7 travelers was a fun and friendly mix of people from Turkey, Brazil, New Zealand, Seattle, and Ohio. This tour also included Monterey, Pebble Beach, Carmel, Cambria, Solvang,Santa Barbara, and a train ride to Los Angeles where it ended. I'd definitely recommend this one!

It was an amazing trip and we can recommend it without any reservations!!! Mark our tour guide, was very attentive and friendly, a safe driver, and ensured that we had a stress free experience. He was also very knowledgeable and fun to have around! We were 5 woman in our group of different ages and from different countries and it was so interesting to get to know everybody, certainly a huge benefit of such a small tour group. The tour was well balanced with beautiful coastal scenes, small villages to explore and visits to bigger cities like Santa Cruz and Santa Barbara. Wish we had time to linger longer in Carmel, a picture perfect little town. Hearst Castle was also a highlight. The train ride to Los Angeles was a positive experience, with our luggage being taken care of, - a smooth ride!

This was a well paced, and well organized tour. The size was just right-- only 6 of us, and the tour guide was wonderful. Hotels were well located and comfortable and there was time to enjoy the stunning natural sites and shop or eat in the gorgeous coastal towns. I hadn't thought visiting an aquarium would be a high point, but the Monterrey Aquarium is something special. It was a fantastic trip!
