Return Details

Pier 33, San Francisco, CA 94133, USA
Start your San Francisco shore excursion by heading to Pier 41 to redeem your voucher. Then, walk over to Pier 33 for the Alcatraz portion of your tour.

Take a ferry ride halfway across the bay to reach Alcatraz Island, best known for its former penitentiary. Embark on an audio tour around the notorious “Cell Block”; learn about infamous prisoners such as the Birdman of Alcatraz and Al Capone; and visit the Mess Hall—known for its surprisingly good food. Along the way, learn interesting facts and anecdotes like how a 1962 attempted (or successful?) escape inspired both a book and a movie.

After your time on Alcatraz, you can enjoy free time to pick up some lunch (own expense) before the next portion of your tour, which meets on Post Street.

When you arrive on Post Street, board a comfortable coach bus. Drive along the bay, taking in views of Alcatraz and nearby Angel Island. Then head into the heart of the city to view some of its most iconic attractions such as the Golden Gate Bridge. If the weather cooperates, you may also explore Golden Gate Park, which is even larger then New York City's Central Park, or stop at the top of Twin Peaks for panoramic views overlooking the entire city. For a list of more stops on the tour, read the Itinerary section below.

Please note: The schedule for the day depends on the availability for Alcatraz. You will be advised of the tour schedule 72-hours prior to tour date. You will need to determine the time you return to your ship in San Francisco. Please allow yourself ample time to enjoy the excursion and ensure your timely return to the port. This excursion is not covered by our worry-free policy.

Alcatraz regularly sells out weeks in advance. Book ahead of time to avoid disappointment.

Alcattaz is its own special and unique place - thought provoking more than exciting but worth the trip. Bus tour of SF was excellent. We got to see many sites that would not otherwise have been available and our tour guide/ driver, Rich, did a great job of providing information and adding local color.

I was desperate to visit Alcatraz, and I wanted to have a concise tour of San Francisco due to my limited vacation time. This tour was affordable and convenient. My tour was held over two days and it actually perfectly worked out! The first day, I got to visit Alcatraz. I spent a good few hours in the island. I spent the rest of my day at Pier 39 and around that area. The second day, I had a fantastic city tour. I enjoyed the Japanese tea garden very much. Shout out to the awesome bus driver, Josh. If your driver is Josh, you are lucky. His tour guide was terrific. I wished I had another tour with him in the PM. It seemed like other tourists in my group booked with him in the PM for a different bus tour. I got to talk to other tourists in my group during the tour, and I loved that part as well. I highly recommend this tour.

Great Alcatraz tour without a city tour that had been paid for

The Alcatraz portion of the trip was great! The rating reflects the city tour portion. The company notified me a week before our scheduled excursion that they would be moving the city tour portion to a different day. We already had purchased non refundable tickets for a different event on that date so I Emailed and called asking what my options were for the six tickets that had been purchased. Viator also emailed the company responsible for the city tour portion of the excursion. I never received a response back nor did I ever receive any additional information about the city tour portion of the excursion.

Driver was great. I believe his name was Dan. He had a vast knowledge of the city and stories were interesting. Only thing negative about the tour is the time allowed at the stops.....would have liked to spend some time in China Town. Most stops only had 10 to 15 minutes to look around. That being said we did see a lot of San Francisco from the window of the bus. I would recommend this tour if you are only in the city for a short time.

I do not recommend this tour. When we arrived we were told our bus was broken and they were getting us a new one. So we waited close to an hour to be told we could rebook or get a refund keep in mind that the only reason I booked this 2 months ago was for Alcatraz because they had sold out as we lined up for refunds, we were told a bus was on its way. We loaded this bus - the driver was clearly called in last minute, but was entertaining in his own way. The SF Marathon happened to have been that morning as well, so the driver had to make adjustments admittedly no one's fault but it became clear about an hour and a half into the tour that the bus we had was the broken one and its warning lights were flashing. The bus was supposed to take us to Fisherman's Wharf for our Alcatraz vouchers, but the driver felt it was unsafe, so he brought us back to the GrayLine office. We did not see the Golden Gate Bridge, the Painted Ladies or several other sights we had been promised. We had to wait for yet another bus to take us to the Wharf and because of all of the delays we were not able to board the ferry for Alcatraz until 3:50 - which did not give us much time on the island. As reparation, we were offered a hop on hop off tour for the next day, but many if not most of us could not fit that in to the plan. I understand mistakes happen, but this was a very long and frustrating day. I paid 450 for the 3 of us and felt this was absolutely NOT worth the money. Plan to book Alcatraz about 3 months in advance and skip this tour altogether!

Tour on bus of SF was pretty good. Great bus driver who really highlighted some great facts and history as we drove by sites. Several stops at Golden Gate Bridge and Sutro Bath Ruins by coast were awesome for my teens on trip. Plus, the only way could get Alcatraz tickets; highlight of whole trip!
