Overview

Although the Mission District is the epicenter of San Francisco’s Latino culture, the multicultural neighborhood was home to Irish, German, and Italian immigrants not long ago. On this small-group food tour, discover how these immigrants and others have shaped the neighborhood by tasting local specialties including Mission-style burritos, Italian sandwiches, San Francisco clam chowder, and, best of all, a “secret” dish. What To Expect

Make your way to the Mission Cultural Center to meet your guide and your small group of 12 people or fewer.

Begin your walking tour with a San Francisco classic: the Mission burrito. Crammed full and masterfully rolled, the Mission-style burrito inspires debates as fiercely as it does appetites. Hear the legends behind the beans as you chow down.

The other stops on your tour may include a famous bakeshop, Italian deli, traditional clam chowder shop, local ice cream shop, and a mystery spot. Skip the line and the wait for each dish, and learn about the Mission’s rich cultural and architectural heritage as you walk around between bites.

Complete your culinary walking tour of the Mission in early afternoon.

    Must Do

Mark the tour guide loves what he does. I felt fortunate to experience a neighborhood that is so dear to his heart. We have been to San Francisco at least a half dozen times and never visited the Mission District I was amazed at the beauty and rich cultural past of this district

Open up to the Mission District Experience
    Brian_N, Oct 2021
Mark brought a wealth of information to the tour as a member of a long-time San Franciscan family. Interesting facts and history at every turn. …and then, the food! Delicious variety enriched with Mark’s experience in the culinary arts. After years of being in and out of San Francisco, I have a whole new level of appreciation for the culture, history, diversity…and flavors.

When we first arrived in the Mission district, we were struck by the depravation. But we visited back streets and alleys, and learned to appreciate the culture here. We ended with a deeper understanding and respect for the people who live here.

I don't think I can say enough good things about this tour. I really enjoyed how long it was and how much history Mark had to offer. It was nice to have choices at most of the places we stopped at and I enjoyed Mark's recommendations of what to get. Do this tour!

    Ken_D, Oct 2021
Mark was knowledgeable warm and friendly. He knew the neighborhood and the food he was teaching us about.
    Can’t miss tour.
    Kim_P, Oct 2021
This tour went above and beyond my expectations. Mark is a fourth generation San Franciscan who intimately knows both the neighborhood and cuisines. The tour involved an in-depth tour and history of murals in the Mission district in addition to culinary culture and samples. You will have left overs bring a bag

    Tamale lady story is awesome
    Dale_H, Aug 2021
All the stories about the mural and what it represents. Eye opening for me on the history of SF. Burrito is good. Wish the tour guide would honor the alcohol as it says on the ticket.
