What You Can Expect

Costa Rica Day Trip from San Jose

Visit La Paz Waterfall Gardens

After early morning pickup at your San Jose hotel in an air-conditioned coach, enjoy an on-board breakfast and steaming cup of Costa Rican coffee. Stop for a guided nature hike among the mountains outside of San Jose to take in the lush scenery and try to spot local wildlife.

Continue on to the Doka Estate coffee plantation, where the same family has been growing and roasting coffee beans for generations. Tour the beautiful, 350-acre (141-hectare) estate, where rich volcanic soil makes an ideal growing coffee-growing climate. Learn how beans are cultivated, harvested, and roasted, and sample an aromatic cup of Doka’s signature brew.

Your next stop is Poás Volcano National Park, home to the still-active Poás Volcano that reaches an impressive 8,884 feet (2,708 meters) above sea level. Take a short hike to the edge of the volcanic crater for views into the smoking cauldron below, and admire the sky-blue Botos Lake that fills a neighboring, dormant crater.

After descending from the volcanoes, head to La Paz Waterfall Gardens, a private nature reserve that boasts miles of scenic hiking trails and more than 100 species of native wildlife housed in various habitats. Meet some of Costa Rica’s tiniest winged creatures at the Hummingbird Garden and Butterfly Observatory, and get an up-close encounter with reptilian residents at the frog exhibit and serpentarium. Soak up the lush tropical scenery with a riverside hike, stopping at one of the many waterfalls along the way.

Break for a lunch of traditional Costa Rican cuisine before driving back to San Jose, where you’ll be dropped off back at your hotel in the afternoon.

I booked this trip for my first day in Costa Rica before joining my weeklong tour. It was a great day and a wonderful introduction to the rich ecosystems of Costa Rica. Though it was too cloudy to see the crater of the volcano , the hike was nice. The coffee plantation tour and breakfast were very good. Coffee production is such an important part of the culture and economy. The La Paz butterfly gardens, nature preserve and waterfalls were the highlight of a very good day. Absolutely beautiful and very interesting. The food for both breakfast and lunch was good, the guide was good and fellow travelers were friendly. Highly recommend.

Awesome tour! Very enjoyable. The Doka Coffee farm was very interesting, so much fun to see the entire process of coffee making and to actually pluck and taste the beautiful red ripe coffee berries. Breakfast was delicious although basic. The drive to Poas volcano was scenic but unfortunately we couldn't see the crater. It was all covered in thick fog and despite waiting for 30 minutes as other mentioned it didn't clear up. We still enjoyed the short walk up to the viewing area. Lunch at La Paz lodge was also delicious. The grounds and all the observatories are fantastic. Waterfalls are spectacular, it is a bit of walk but everything is paved and didn't quite feel like a hike. We enjoyed all the beautiful views despite it being a rainy day, my only regret is that everything we saw at La Paz other than waterfalls had been set up. The animals were in cages it was like visiting a zoo, and the beautiful landscaping all along the private property had been designed to be there. It was all beautiful and native to the area but had been planted there.

Fantastic trip. I thought this was great value for money as we took in the Doka coffee farm, Poas volcanoes and wonderful La Paz wildlife retreat and waterfalls. With Marco providing the information/ advice/ jokes/ enthusiasm and Ricardo keeping us safe on the road, the whole day was great fun as well as being educational! - many thanks. We had a great group of people from many parts of the world who all got on so well - great team building event!. By the way, the breakfast and lunch were super

A very pleasant and interesting tour that I enjoyed a lot. The weather was good so even if it was some clouds hiding the volcano as we arrived they split after only a few minutes so that we could see and take pictures of the landscape. A nice lunch was also included and the tour was topped by a knowledgeable and humorous guide.

At first I was a little skeptical about tour. However, my tour was beyond my expectation. The tour guide and driver were one of the most welcoming and amazing people I and #39;ve met. I and #39;m from NY. To my fellow American traveler, always say thank you, be on time and tip like we always do at home. - Elliott A
