What You Can Expect

Joint Security Area (JSA) Tour: Get Close to the North Korean Border

Joint Security Area (JSA) Tour: Get Close to the North Korean Border

Meet your guide at the centrally located President Hotel, departing Seoul by coach toward Panmunjom — a former ‘truce village’ centered in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and site of the 1953 Korean Armistice Agreement, which split the Korean peninsula in two at the end of the Korean War.

Your first stop is the Unification Park, where you’ll discover multiple monuments commemorating Korean War heroes during a 30-minute tour including the War Correspondents Monument and the Human Bomb Heroes Monument. Afterward, you’ll depart to Panmunjom for the JSA portion of your tour, passing the Unification Bridge and a series of checkpoints en route.

On arrival at the Joint Security Area, follow your guide to the briefing room for an orientation, First established as the site of military negotiations between North Korea and the United Nations Command (UNC), the JSA is now the only place where it is possible for the two Koreas to engage in diplomatic dialogue face to face. During your tour, see where South and the North liaisons meet at the Freedom House, and learn about inter-Korean dialogue at the MAC conference room.

Continue to the Bridge of No Return and learn from your guide about the Ax Murder Incident of 1976 when two US Army officers were killed by North Korean soldiers. First used for POW exchanges in 1953, the bridge is named for the irreversible decision of whether to remain in the country of captivity or return to one’s place of origin.

Afterward, recharge with a stop at a Korean restaurant for a traditional bulgogi (beef) lunch (vegetarian option available) before returning to Seoul, with drop-off at the President Hotel in the evening (arrival time subject to traffic conditions).

The tour is just for the JSA and does not include the DMZ as the description might lead you to believe. The guide was great, very informative and even gave my girl friend some pants when it seemed like her skirt was just barely too short. The tour company realized the description mistake and made it right, They care about their customers and I would recommend this tour is you only wanted to visit the JSA.

Tour was informative and guide was knowledgeable.
It was good to go to go war memorial even if we only had 30 minutes to look at stuff. So recommend a pre trip.
Lunch was really good.
Tour could of been a bit longer for price paid finished at dmz at 3.15 and was back in Seoul at 4.20.

The JSA is interesting and a very unique experience. The tour guide could tell more about the history / background, especially at the memorial. Compared to organizing your tour locally or with other agencies it is overpriced because you will not get a premium tour.

We enjoyed the day and standing on the North Korean side was exciting, but we found the first half of the day was drawn out a bit. We found the tour director hard to understand but she was very lovely so didn't get the full history behind it as we could not understand everything said had to really concentrate on what she was saying. More time at the war museum would have been good, as it seemed very rushed.

The tour itself was great and a lifetime experience. The only problem was that the travel agent had a large group of people that day, so all the focus was on that group and the rest of us were totally neglected in some cases (sat at the back of bus, in a corner for lunch, in the back in the tours...

1 star rating: I do not recommend this September 2016

BEWARE.... What is listed in the description was not what we received. What's listed:
1 Seoul day trip to the Joint Security Area near Koreas north-south border
2 Visit the War Memorial of Korea in Yongsan and gaze at multiple monuments at Unification Park
3 Tour the JSA with a knowledgeable guide and learn about talks between both Koreas
4 Hear about the tragic events that took place at the Bridge of No Return
5 Have lunch at a Korean restaurant in Limjin Gan Park Transport by comfortable coach included
6 Listed as taking approximately 8 hours

We did not get to visit the War Memorial of Korea in Yongsan and the monuments at Unification Park and the tour was a half day, lasting about 5 hours not 8.

The tour itself was great. I am just disappointed that the description does not accurately reflected what was actually included and feel that the price shouldn't be almost 100 if all you get is a half day tour of just the JSA.
