What You Can Expect

Authentic Local Food Tour in Central Shanghai

Food tour in central Shanghai

Find your way to the Huangpi Nan Road metro station in Shanghai, where you will meet your guide and group. Depart on foot for the Xintiandi area.

Make your first stop at a local restaurant serving up the best soup dumplings in the city. Find a table among the locals, then taste the famous dish and participate in an in-depth discussion on the flavor and consistency of the broth, the quality of the meat filling, and the texture of the dumplings' skin. Learn about the history of this dish as a Shangainese staple.

Continue to the famous Yunnan Road, once the border between the French Concession area and the Shanghai residential areas, approximately 15 minutes' walking distance. See the border where French-style apartments suddenly give way to traditional Chinese stone door houses (Shikumen).

Visit three restaurants in the neighborhood to try local dishes and see how the native city residents eat and live. Taste dishes such as spring rolls, candied lotus rice, roasted duck, scallion oil noodles, red-braised pork, and parched chicken. Between stops, cleanse your palate with green or black tea and listen to your guide's commentary on Shanghai's culinary culture and traditions.

It was very enjoyable tour! We tasted local foods, beer, so many kinds of Chinese tea and so on and everything was perfect. Tour is not only for eating foods but also good for understanding Chinese culture and seeing local life. If you want to experience locan things, I highly recommend this tour.

Jim is so knowledgeable about Shanghai and the food scene. The highlight was a couple of craft beer stops and homemade Shanghai soup dumplings. A great way to experience Shanghai.

Jim, the owner and guide was wonderful. We had local brewed beer in the French Concession, yummy noodles with meat and fish, then off to a Tea Shop and sampled several kinds, then to a scallion pancake maker these were the best, and finally to a dumpling shop with two different kinds and a wash down with a local liquor. Jim is very knowledgeable and makes his tour very enjoyable as we also took walks through Li Longs, the back alleys where the locals live and work. Highly recommend this tour to everyone. We took the 1P tour.

Great tour from a highly knowledgeable host. Jim was very friendly and a delight. Authentic local noodle house was great, as was tea shop, dumpling restaurant, and other stops all delicious. This tour is perfect for travellers looking to try authentic local cuisine. You don't need to be very adventurous, all the food is great, but if you're a picky eater worried about whats in this/how much salt/fat etc a food tour isn't for you! And if you can't use chopsticks maybe bring your own fork :P
My only feedback was a wish that the craft beer we had to start the tour was bigger.
Would recommend!

This was probably the best tour we did while In Shanghai. We did it on our first day in the city and it was the perfect opening to our trip. Jim is super awesome and very knowledgeable. He has spent the time to plan the walk perfectly with the placement of things you need exactly when you need them! The food places are all places you will never find on your own and are all delicious. Jim changes it up so I don't want to say where we went because you may not go to the exact same places, but wherever you go I guarantee you will thoroughly enjoy the experience and hanging out with Jim.

Jim and Laura were excellent tour guides. They are very knowledgeable about food and culture in Shanghai which really helped me appreciate the brief time I spent there. They showed me around the local neighbourhoods in the former French Concession and Laoximeng area. I was very lucky that it was only me in the tour so it turned out to be a private one! We tried different foods and my top favourites were the Xiao long bao pork soup dumplings, fried dough dipped in freshly boiled soy milk. We also went to the tea ceremony and tried different types of tea, that was really a good experience and gave me a great appreciation of how tea is prepared in the traditional way. Jim also got me to try this super delicious ice cream which wasn't part of the food tour but he went out of his way to have me try it which was indeed a bonus ! I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Shanghai for the first time. Thanks Jim and Laura. You guys are the best foodie guides.

This tour was quite literally the highlight of our whole China trip.
Jim was an amazing tour guide with fluent English. We started in the French Concession sipping craft beer to walking around traditional Shanghai trying local food vendors. There was tea tasting, dumplings, vendor food and a surprise Chinese ice-cream at the end. Jim informed us about the history and the culture of Shanghai whilst answering all our questions. We had a small group of only 4 from various countries.
You may think a food tour would be a debatable thing to do in a foreign country, but all the places we were taken to were full of locals and had fresh food, cooked in front of you. The back streets were amazing and we could have taken Jim on the rest of our 17 day stay as a professional tour guide. Just amazing!

If you have one day in Shanghai, this is the tour I would recommend!!

Jim was absolutely the best. This young man loves his culture and sharing it with others. We had the greatest noodles, dumplings and a variety of other foods. The tea ceremony was special for me. We learned a lot about the areas, neighborhoods , culture and food. Loved this tour
