This tour is worth taking but be prepared for at least 4-5 hours driving for the return trip from downtown Shanghai to the locations east of the city. Our guide Kelly was terrific. Her English was excellent and her insights into today's culture in China were very interesting. Unfortunately we had a new driver with whom Kelly had not worked before and he got lost twice. This extended our driving time by at least 30 minutes as he had to stop twice to recalibrate his GPS and get instructions from the guide. He also smoked out the window at one point when we were stuck in traffic with the smoke blowing back into the van.

The visit to the gardens in Suzhou and the Tongli water village were worthwhile particularly the water village. We skipped the temple visit as we had lost time with the driver.

Tongli is an old area set in amongst new development. The government charges any one but locals 100 Yuan to enter. You enter by walking down a long tree covered street with shops of course and then you reach the canals. The main thorough fares are canals. They are about 20ft wide at most, enough for two boats to pass. There are stone bridges and walkways along the canals. Much of the town is given over to restaurants and shops but many elderly people still live there in not ideal conditions. We wandered through the town and had lunch at a quiet little place on the canal which served Chinese and western food. We walked though a former private home with a lovely garden then took a boat ride on the canal. The boat operator used a single oar with a rope apparatus to help him with the oar which was mounted on a small metal spindle. We took many photos and then headed back to the hotel. Traffic was terrible and it took us 2.5 hours to get back.

Very beautiful tour with our guide Shine.
We were picked up in time at the hotel and drove straight to the beautiful Humble Administrator's Garden, then we visited Suzhou and the tour ended in Tongli. We adored this peaceful place that reminded us a little bit of Venice. A boat tour is a must !!
