A wonderful tour ! Our guide Lisa made a first class job, as it was a private tour for just two. Xitang was very nice at evening, with its narrow streets full of candlelights.... We had some surprises from Lisa and Miki, including a kind of pre-dinner at a local small-hotel, tasting of Xitang Liqueurs, dinner at a small restaurant by the Riverside and, finally, a fun karaoke night with them singing like pros. A MUST during a Shanghai stay. By the end of the tour, Miki offered us some nice presents, and that made us that night so special that we'll never forget. Thanks a lot for everything, Lisa and Miki. Hope to meet you again !

Only visiting Shanghai for a few days, my friend and I were a little hesitant to leave the city to visit the countryside. Boy, are we glad we did! Xitang is an absolutely magical place and is a good glimpse into the local culture and history. The charming water village provided much needed contrast to the buzz and density of Shanghai. What was once an important trading post due to it's position and water access, Xitang now caters to tourists without feeling overly touristy a feeling which we like to avoid. Small bars and shops line the old canals, while countless explorable alleyways connect traditional homes to the main areas. Here, it is easy to get the sense of stepping back into time.
Miki Tours does an excellent job, possibly the best tour experience we've ever had. The driver picked us up on time at our hotel in a comfy and clean vehicle. Along the route, Miki explained various points of interest. She seems extremely passionate about what she does and has a huge wealth of knowledge about everything we encountered along our way, being able to answer even trivial questions about what certain buildings are for, or the way life works in China. Once we arrived at the village she took us around and explained the history of different buildings, bridges, and corridors something we didn't expect to find so fascinating, but the way she narrates made it so. Miki was very engaging with me and my friend, asking us about what we like and then catering the experience to us we mentioned liking to have a drink so she took us to sample rice wine, for example. She then took us to a bar for a round of beers, and before we knew it she had everyone in the bar singing together. And then, just when we thought it couldn't get any better, she took us to an absolutely delicious family style restaurant, where we tried a dizzying array of local dishes, each one seemingly more delicious than the last. After a bit more walking to help digest, we arrived back at the van, which took us back to Shanghai just in time for a reasonable bedtime, or in our case, a night on the town.
I would highly recommend anyone who has a few days in Shanghai to give this tour a try, or any tour led by Miki Tours' company. All of her suggestions were perfect. Miki, if you're reading this, thank you for the great time!

The guide and experience were fantastic. Miki totally customized the tour to us, while throwing in a lot of great surprises along the way. She clearly knows the town very well, and even took us on a bonus tour of a less developed water town when we said we had more time. My tour companions mentioned they felt like a local friend was showing them around their hometown. This tour costs a little more than some of the other water town tours but we thought it was an awesome value based on the amount you will see and experience! Based on other reviews I was hoping this would be a great tour but it far exceeded my already high expectations.

This was our favorite trip during our recent visit to Shanghai. We had organised the trip through Miki tours and were met at our hotel by Zoe who was a fabulous host for the evening. The ride in the taxi from our downtown hotel took just over an hour but was completely worthwhile. The water village looked fabulous in the evening and wandering through the many streets was fascinating before a fabulous dinner in one of the riverside restaurants. We even went for a tour down one of the alleys bouncing with party life and had a drink in one on the many live music bars. If you do one trip when in Shanghai then this is the one I would recommend

We were met by Miki at our Shanghai hotel. She was on time and took us out to the car. She connected our phones to her wifi, which was an unexpected bonus.

The journey to Xiang went very quickly and throughout the journey she told about China and the surrounding villages. She explained what we were going to see and experience on the tour.

At Xitang we saw that village by day and by night are totally different. We arrived just before 6pm and was dropped in a side road. Miki explained and the farming history in the village , it was informative and fun

Miki took us through hidden alleyways that we would never have found on our own. The building at the side of the waterways have all been converted to shops, bars and restaurants. We were taken to sample snacks and local drinks. Very refreshing. We then went to a local bar to try the local beer, the was karaoke if we wished we declined but Miki sang to us instead it was brilliant

We then went to a restaurant called the 7 table Inn, Miki advised in ordering and the food was excellent, the best we tasted in the whole of our trip. Following this we went to sample rice wine then on to see the street food. We walked in the footsteps of Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible 3. I watched this again on the flight home and recognised the area.

All the time Miki was taking photos of us with her camera because of the low light after the sunset produced much better photos These were emailed to us after the tour.

I would highly recommend everyone does this tour. There are several other water village tours available but you don't get the personal service or value for money that Miki offers. Also the other tours are very busy and because there are so many going to the same place at the same time, you are cramped together. It was the highlight of our trip to China and Asia

This was the highlight of our trip to China. I have always wanted to visit Xitang after Mission Impossible 3. Miki, being a local, showed us all the hidden alleyways and gems that we would have missed. As night falls, the mesmerizing beauty of the village is especially enchanting! Thank you Miki!

Our Xitang water village tour was with a very passionate guide, Miki. She is extremely knowledgeable about the region. At the beginning of the tour, each member of the group was given a fan to cool ourselves in this hot Summer weather .

When we arrived at sunset, there were no big tour groups anymore.
This town looked like it had a busy daytime, and came back to its original peace at sunset.
We enjoyed walking in the old alleys , the night view of Xitang is stunning! When night falls, when all lanterns are lit over the old Ming and Qing buildings, we feel like walking back in time to China 's Ming Dynasty. The only words I can say is : So beautiful!

Xitang is definitely worth a visit, We have enjoyed very much sitting at the river side enjoying refreshments from a local Xitang family's home and dinner at nice restaurant.

As a frequent traveler to China , I have been to many famous water villages like Zhouzhuang , Zhujiajiao , etc ...... . So far Xitang is my favorite water village , I think I will come back again with my family and stay here overnight my kids would love trying the many local bars here as they love to sing there are more than 200 different bars I think !
