Make your way to the Planeta Buonivini winery, located in the beautiful southern countryside near Noto. Completed in 2003, the ‘invisible’ winery was carefully designed to integrate into the surrounding landscape and features innovative underground architecture. A marriage of long-lived winemaking traditions with the newest technologies is on display in features such as a rebuilt palmento (millstone) using historic elements from early 20th-century fermentation pits. Begin with a walk through the vineyards and a short tour of the winemaking facilities, where you can watch the production process in action. Then, sample the finished product for yourself with a tasting of four Planeta wines paired with appetizers and the estate’s own extra-virgin olive oil. Finish the flavorful experience with a 3-course lunch of regional specialties such as Modica pies, sun-dried cherry tomatoes, pasta, and fresh seafood from the neighboring fishing village of Marzamemi. Round out the feast with coffee, fresh-baked biscuits and—of course—more wine!

The Planeta Wine experience is one...
The Planeta Wine experience is one we would definitely book again. Our guide for the tour, Viviana, was informative and pleasant and the winery itself is beautiful. It's wonderful to escape into the countryside after several days touring churches and city streets. It was a relaxing few hours full of delicious wine.
Speaking of which, we tasted four wines and they were all excellent, with a couple being wines we will purchase and drink again. The tour is brief, roughly 20 minutes walking past the vineyards and into the storage facility. Viviana answered all our questions about the wine making process. Then there is the tasting in the charming tasting room and then a simple lunch, ours was fresh salad and pasta, with ample servings of wine to accompany.
The staff was very accommodating as another couple had also booked a tour and then became lost. While we waited for their arrival, we were offered wine and a comfortable table outside or free roam of the vineyard.
If you're curious about Sicilian wine then I recommend this tour and ask lots of questions. As I mentioned, the tour of the facilities is brief so make the most of it. Again, the lunch was simple but very good and the wines were delicious. It is a lovely place to visit and something we would gladly do again.
