What To Expect

Begin your day trip with pickup in central Siena. Meet your guide and hop aboard your minivan, setting off toward Montalcino.

Travel into the Tuscan hills and stop first at a small winery for a walk among the vineyards. Swirl and sip the famous Brunello di Montalcino, and check out the cellars with your guide.

Next, arrive in the town of Montalcino, the region’s namesake. Soak up some free time to roam the area independently, enjoying the views of the valley below, perusing the shops or tasting more of the celebrated Brunello wines.

Afterward, journey to a family-run winery, where you’ll meet the winemakers. Delve into some of the region’s culinary favorites with a lunch of antipasti, pasta or risotto and dessert, complemented by delicious local wines.

Appetites sated, continue to the ancient Benedictine abbey of Sant'Antimo. Learn about the stunning structure’s history as you follow your guide inside. On occasion, visitors will hear the monks singing Gregorian chants while taking in the scenery.

Top off your trip with a visit to a third winery for a fascinating lesson on production, the aging process and more. Take a seat for a final tasting before returning to Siena.

Traveler Tips

It is a full day so don't plan on doing much else on that day.
There are a few tours leave from the same spot in the morning but you venture off onto your own tours.
We also had 30 minutes to explore Montalcino on foot, which is something that other tours don't offer.

An absolute must-do activity!
Nichole_P, Jul 2022
We had an absolute blast on our Montalcino wine tasting and could not recommend it enough. We loved learning about the wine itself as well as the three individual family-run vineyards we were able to visit. Each one was so unique and everyone was so knowledgable and nice. Lunch was fantastic and we overall had an outstanding day. It's important to say that our trip would not have been as fun without our guide and driver, Guillermo. He was an exceptional guide full of so much knowledge not only about wine but Italy and Siena itself. He knows everything about everything and we really appreciated how passionate he was and how much we learned from him. I wish he could take us on every tour!!

Great way to explore Tuscany
James_P, Oct 2022
A fabulous way to enjoy the day in Tuscany. We had 6 people total on our tour. It took about 1 hour to get to the Montalcino region. We stopped at 3 wineries total, each gave a brief tour and history of the winery, with tasting and opportunity to purchase. First stop was a monastery. Second stop was our first small family winery. Then we stopped in Montalcino. Second winery was lunch, then finished at a third before heading back to Siena. Driver was excellent the entire day, with history about the region and its wines. And navigating impossibly small dirt country roads in a large comfortable van with professionalism and ease. All wineries were great, but the second just blew us away. Villa A Tolli is a very small ancient village in the countryside. The family manages a B&B, olive oil, vineyard and winery business on the property. Our host Anthony is a wine consultant, he is a US native, and he basically gave us a Masters class on vineyard agriculture and Brunella wine making. We enjoyed a 3 course lunch starting with bruschetta, then pasta with Ragu, then nonna cake. It was spectacular. The quality and flavors were amazing, we tasted and discussed several wines throughout. This was my favorite and the best meal in Italy on our 2 week trip. There were 2 wines available for purchase and they provide shipping options My only feedback in the wine tour is that I would have preferred another winery instead of the monastery. This is a magical region to explore further, we may be looking into the b&b next.
Great way to experience Tuscany wines
David_C, Sep 2022
This was an excellent experience on our first full day in Siena. Our guide, Daniele, was very knowledgeable and experienced in wine making and the region. He lives not far from Montalcino. He made the day much more interesting and fun. He explained many aspects of wine making, Tuscany and the Brunello wines that I'm glad to know now. The 3 wineries we visited were all friendly and welcoming, even though we were there at during the harvest time. They shared a lot of information about their wineries and the wines they produce. The wines were all excellent. We ordered several bottles shipped and can't wait until they arrive. We bought a couple more and took them back to our apartment in Siena and enjoyed them the next few days. We highly recommend this trip to anyone visiting the area who would like to learn more about these wines and of course, taste several of them!
Good wine, good banter and good value for money
Daniella_S, Jul 2022
This tour is highly recommended. We were only in Siena a few nights, but so glad we gave this trip a go. Will, our driver, was brilliant - so friendly, funny, factual and accommodating and built great rapport with each of us. The things we learnt, the sites we saw and the wines we tasted were great! I don’t want to spoil any surprises for future guests, but the secondary winery/lunch really is incredible - cava doviche! This is great tour and gave a great taste for any budding wine drinkers!
Fun, Educational, but relaxed and First-Class
Ashish_L, Jul 2022
The story matters. Daniel, our guide, presented us with the “story” of Montalcino, and the birth of Brunello. With a tremendous pedigree and passion for wine, Daniel provided us with a first-class tour of three diverse and unique vineyards. In between visits, Daniel shared his knowledge and the rich history of the area. While the tour is exhausting (8-9 hours, summer heat), it was well worth it; an escape from the tourist crowds, hosted by wonderful vineyards, and a delicious lunch. Anyone with an interest in wine, and a willingness to learn about Brunello, should attend. Daniel was spectacular; it was like having a university lecturer deliver a tour.
Become a mini-expert in Brunello di Montalcino!

Great tour! Highly recommend. Will be recommending to friends who come to Siena. Danielle is a great tour guide. He was enthusiastic, well-educated about wine, shared local knowledge, and had great relationships with winemakers. He told us background and history as we were driving to each place. Although it was 9 hours, the day flew by. We were 7 guests plus Danielle. Wonderful lunch. Didn’t feel rushed. Plenty of opportunities to use restrooms. We first drove to one winery and did a tasting around 11. On the way to next winery, we stopped and walked around a beautiful old abbey. Then we had family-style lunch and a tasting at the same time. Next we drove to the town of Montalcino and walked around on our own for 30 minutes. Finally we stopped at one more winery for a final tasting, then drove back to Siena and got back around 7pm. We got 3-4 wines at each place. Usually one rose, one Rosso di Montalcino, and of course a Brunello di Montalcino. Delicious!
Fantastic day tasting Brunello wine
Lester_H, Sep 2021
It was an amazing day in the Siena countryside. The scenery was fantastic and the three wineries we visited were very good. I had looked forward to this excursion for a long time and it was worth the wait.

One of highlights of our trip
APTravelgirl, Aug 2021
This was probably one of the highlights of our two weeks in Italy. We wanted to do this tour, not just for wine, but also to see the Montalcino area without having to drive. There were 4 of us total in tour so very personal and small, which is always nice. It lasted about 9 hours so its definitely an all day tour. We went to three wineries, all different from each other so that made it interesting. We also went to an Abby and to the town of Montalcino so we could walk around. We had an amazing lunch with the most gracious host in one of the wineries in their house. It was so amazing. Our tour guy Daniele was so nice and informative and we really just had the best time. Highly recommend if you have the time.
It was fun to visit the wineries...
Charles D, Oct 2016
It was fun to visit the wineries around Siena! The time in Montalcino is very short, maybe 30 minutes, so if you want to explore that town this trip might not be the one for you. All three wine tastings were good, the first two winery tours brought you to the vineyards and explained their processes, while the third wine tour was very short. The small group environment was a lot of fun and our tour guide was great. Overall would certainly recommend!

The best day of our stay in siena....and we had wonderful days...unforgettable because of the choice of family owned small vineyards producing high quality wines...including one that piped Mozart to help the vines grow, another where we served delicious lunch at the dining room table in a 16th century farmhouse and the final, organic farm with chickens and dogs close at hand as we sipped wine at a table in the midst of the early spring .. Charming and informed guide..a stop at an 11th century abbey where monks chanted around noon
A Fabulous Day
John_B, Oct 2019
Of all that we saw and did in our 10-day trip to Tuscany, this was tops. We expected it to be interesting and fun, but it was also an adventure. Our driver, Amber, was terrific. She picked us up in the van and off we went into the countryside and up hills, deep into the wine-producing land and through villages. The ride is not for the infirm or faint of heart--the roads are rough and steep and you get rocked around in your seatbelt. There was an early change of plan because of a bicycle race in the area of our first vineyard stop; Amber and the other drivers punted and we were taken to a wonderful family vineyard and home for a tour and tasting on their lovely patio. Then on and up to a gorgeous hilltop vineyard for a sit-down lunch with the other van groups, 30 of us in all. Fine wines, wonderful food, amazing scenery. We were taken to yet another lovely winery and toured more of the area before being driven back into Siena. It was a long day, just great, well worth the price.
Tasty wines and good tourguide

This was a great wine tour starting from Siena in Tuscany. Our guide (Ambra) met us at a central point in town and off we went to Montalcino for some great wines to try. We visited vineyards of different sizes and met welcoming hosts there as well. Lunch was at one of the vineyards. We even had time for a stop in the center of Montalcino, which was cute. I recommend this tour to anyone interested in learning more about the Brunello wine of Montalcino :) Hope you get Ambra, she is so fun and nice.
Fantastic!
Brian_C, Aug 2019
Our tour guide ‘Danny’ was so passionate and knowledgeable about the region. We got to see, taste and explore some amazing places. There were a couple of surprise stops sprinkled into the day which were fantastic! I will definitely recommend this tour and our tour guide to all my friends and family planning to visit the region.
Best Wine Tasting Tour Ever!!!
Pioneer06319440742, Jun 2019
Words really can’t describe the tour that my twin 21 year old daughters and I took yesterday. We were entertained for almost 9 hours by our guide Guillermo as we visited 3 incredible wineries in Maltachino. The views were almost as spectacular as the Brunello wine we tasted. If you’re in the Siena area during your trip, please carve out a day to take this tour. You will NOT regret it!! Grazie, Guillermo!!!
A Memorable wine tasting day

My sister and I met with our tour guide Elio and a small group in Siena. We traveled to three wineries and tasted a number of vintage wines and had a lovely lunch at one of the vineyards. Our tour guide was one of the best of the many tours with Viator. Great day all around.

Fantastic Tuscan Experience!

We had a great day on our tour! We got to visit 3 lovely small wineries and even had lunch with one of the owners and his family right in their house. His wife cooked us a great 3 course lunch that we got to enjoy with their wine and olive oil.

Ronald C, Oct 2017
This was easily one of the best tours of my entire two-week trip in Italy. A lovely drive though the tuscan countryside to visit three top-notch vineyards and to taste Brunello di Montalcino wine. What could be better, except perhaps a home-cooked meal at one of the stops - a feature that was ALSO provided for. Couldn't ask for a better wine-tasting trip. It even included a few brief stops to see a couple of non-wine related sights and to let us stretch our legs.
