What You Can Expect

Skagway Shore Excursion: Glassblowing Lesson at Jewell Gardens

Glassblowing shore excursion in Skagway

Take home a memorable souvenir of your Alaskan cruise when your cruise ship pulls into Skagway. Head to Jewell Gardens, located just outside the northeastern edge of downtown, about two miles (3 km) from the port. You can walk, take the Skagway city transit or bike from the port. This shore excursion is not covered by our worry-free policy, so please allow yourself plenty of time to enjoy the gardens and ensure your timely return to the port.

Your 2-hour glassblowing experience begins at the ‘hot shop,’ where the glassblowing takes place. Your gaffer (a nickname for a glassblower) shows you the equipment. Watch up-close a live demonstration of the process, and gain insight into the ancient art of transforming molten glass into ornaments, jewelry, dishes, vases, ornaments, dishes and more.

Then, try your own hand at blowing a glass ornament. Even better, Jewell Gardens will ship your ornament anywhere in the world — on the house — so you don’t have to worry about getting it home in one piece.

After the lesson, enjoy a guided tour of the glass gallery to check out more pieces of hand-blown glass, and then meander through the organic flower and vegetable gardens. Thirsty after the heat of glassblowing? Beer and wine are available for purchase at your own expense.

Or, visit the garden railway, where a model train from the White Pass & Yukon Route winds through a scaled-down version of old Skagway and then travels through mountains and forests.

Please note: A minimum of two people per booking is required.

I booked this lesson, so I could do something with my mom. We both seriously enjoyed the lesson and were thrilled with the ornaments we made. I highly recommend this excursion option.

My mom and I enjoyed this excursion very much. It was a highlight of our trip and one that will not be forgotten. Our glass ball we made arrived one day after we returned home and it was packed without breaking. Thank you for the memory.

My husband and I were on a cruise around southern Alaska and stopped at Skagway. We saw this excursion to Jewell Gardens and signed up to go. It was such a great day at the gardens. The lesson we had with Travis was such a delight. We each made a beautiful glass ornament for our garden back home and learned quite a lot about the entire glass blowing process. We capped off our day by dining at the small cafe at the garden and ate a lovely lunch there. Most of the produce was grown at the gardens. I had a terrific bowl of chicken rhubarb chili. Delish!
