This was an amazing experience with our tour guide, Raffi. Things to know: a 4x4 is not as I assumed an ATV, but rather a Jurassic Park-esque army bus with wild suspension and rough and tumble look. The ride up the side of Vesuvius is fast, turbulent, and a little stomach-churning. A once-in-a-lifetime experience. Once the busses can no longer drive, everyone disembarks and hikes the rest of the journey. Prepare for weather- we were there in early September, but on an overcast day. It was cold, and windy! I was glad to have a sweatshirt. I have heard the opposite, that on very sunny days it feels as though you're being fried! Wear good walking shoes, the hike is steep! The second half of the excursion, lunch and wine tasting, was fabulous. Great food and portions, and great wine! Super hospitable family vineyard that we were happy to support. Definitely takes the majority of your day, but well worth it. Highly recommend!
A brilliant day out....even if we didn't have the weather, low cloud and drizzle...the 4x4 trip up the lower slopes was hilarious, just remember to hold on! The walk to the crater was ok, however if you have any issues with walking you may want to think twice, quite steep in places and walking over loose shale and volcanic sand. The meal at the vineyard was excellent, as was the wine and the homemade apricot schnapps...I may have dozed on the way back to Sorrento :-
Excellent guide, Vito, great access to the volcano and lunch at the Winery was excellent. All in all a really good day and highly recommended.
This was a great experience start to finish and well worth the money....make sure you are able to walk steep inclines and for about a mile...insure you have hiking shoes...you will be trekking straight up on a sandy rocky trail. The ride on the 4x4 was very unstable. It was great....enjoyed it very much...
Great day - good tour guide - nice lunch - good group size and freedom to explore - steep hike to rim but so worth it - only negative was our jeep driver who was going way too fast and blew a tire in a pot hole on the descent. We survived and enjoyed the day very much.
First class from the air conditioned coach, the 4X4 wheel drive quite exciting and the lunch was lovely and the wines perfect.
My only reqret that we did not have more time to enjoy each course of food and wine it felt rushed at the end which was a shame.
Pasquale our quide was very helpful and informated and there were a few older ones with us and he took great care with them to make sure they did not excert themselves too much the walk was nice and steady to the top.
Two of us enjoyed this awesome tour August 2016! Vito was our tour guide and he was nice, humorous and shared great information about the area, the history and Mt. Vesuvius. Our pick-up location was a Sorrento bus area and it was a close 8 min walk from our Sorrento Lodgings. There was a little confusion at the bus stop, as there are several tour companies and various tours happening at the same time and no specific area for your bus. Since we got there early we asked around. You just have to look at each bus, most buses have a 8x12 sign with the tour names so you need to look for that and then ask around. Once Vito and our bus showed up we drove from Sorrento towards Mr. Vesuvius and Vito discussed the plan for the day as well as the history. We picked up our 4X4 and drove upwards awesome pics. At the base, we began our walk up to the crater. Vito lead the way at a brisk pace. He stopped twice to point out a couple of specific things. Most were able to keep up, although a few people stopped on their own to catch their breath. Definitely recommend good walking/hiking shoes... there were a few people in sandals who were able to hike it, but most complained afterwards as it was rocky/sandy and a steep climb. At the top, a guide from Mt. Vesuvius explained it's history and current state more in depth. Vito told us what time to reconvene at the base and we were given personal time to walk the crater, take pictures and for those interested shop at the 3 little hut shops. We enjoyed the 4X4 back down the mountain, then headed to the winery where we were given a tour of the vineyard and the machinery. We then had one of the best lunches of our 2 weeks in Italy. With lunch there was an appetizer, dessert and 4 wines. We were able to purchase wine as well. If you're looking for something to do in Italy that is adventurous, educational and includes a great Italian meal this is it!
The organisation was excellent and the guide Vito very knowledgeable. The 4x4 ride was good fun and it was well worth the walk to the top. It was a bit cloudy but we could still see a long way. The lunch and wine tasting were the perfect way to spend the afternoon. The staff at the vineyard were very accommodating of our food preferences. The wine was lovely - especially the riserva.
I really enjoyed this - I wish that this included Pompeii but hey! I truly loved the lunch and wine tasting that we had - the food was exceptionally delicious. Really recommend this, would do it again!
Great trip! Great tour guide and value for money. The hike is quite tough but well worth it. The lunch and wine tasting were an excellent finish to a great day.
Very good tour. The hike wasn't too strenuous to the crater. The weather was clear for us, so the views at the top were great! My wife and I were pleased with the lunch and wines. Good variety. Loved the fresh spaghetti! I would recommend this tour.
A superb trip. Take suitable walking shoes and a walking pole if you are at all unsteady on your feet. The lunch at the vineyard was tasty and the wines very small tasters were quite pleasant.
The trip was absolutely amazing. We loved it and our guide Lane was so nice and very funny. Definitely will be recommendingredients this to friends.
This tour was amazing. Getting to the top of Mt. Vesuvius is breathtaking. The wine tasting exceeded my expectations - the food was delicious and the owners were so warm and accommodating. I would definitely recommend this tour!
Absolutely brilliant from start to finish. This has been the highlight of our trip to Italy. The views are spectacular and the four wheel drive was hilarious. The lunch and wine tasting was superb. I would highly recommend this excursion to anyone staying in the area
Good day out enjoyed the balance of the two parts the walk and lunch. Can't fault this. Except more wine but you have to be realistic
My husband and I were not quite prepared for this! Hike actually means hike - so get ready! We had the time of our lives. Lots and lots of laughs. The weather wasn't great at the top of the volcano but it was still an incredible experience we were actually in clouds, too!. You definitely need a glass of wine or a few! when you're finished so the incorporation of the vineyard and lunch is an excellent touch. Even the Jurassic Park theme trucks that take you up on the mountain are a blast. Definitely wear closed toe shoes and bring a jacket - it can get chilly! This was a once in a lifetime experience - not to be missed!!!

A very well organised trip very good lunch with plenty of wine
We would highly recommend this tour. We were collected from a coach park in central Sorrento. The park was easy to find and within easy walking distance from hotels. We boarded the coach and made our way to the vineyard first for a bathroom stop. We reached Vesuvius coach park and changed to the 4 x 4 vehicles, these vehicles take you most of the way up to the top and are very bumpy but lots of fun. You get to see how some magnificent views on the way up. Next comes the hike to the top, I would recommend sensible shoes as the pathways are gravel and it is quite steep, it takes roughly 20 mins depending on your group. The hike is so worth it as the views are magnificent and you can take some spectacular photos. At the top there is a bar to buy drinks and a souvenir shop also. You get roughly around 45 mins at the top and the walk back down to the 4 x 4's is much easier. We were then taken by coach to the vineyard where we had a lovely lunch and lots of lovely wine to taste. We had a real good laugh and enjoyed ourselves so much. You get to walk around the vineyard and learn a little about wine making. You can also purchase any wine that you like. I would highly recommend the white wine, it's lovely. Sadly our trip was over and we were taken back to Sorrento and dropped back at the coach park. Our tour guide was Raffy, she was very knowledgable and gave us lots of information. Raffy answered everyone's questions brilliantly, she certainly knows her stuff and she is a lovely lady too. Pointers for the trip - wear sensible shoes and even if the weather is warm, it can get quite cool as you climb Versuvius so a cardigan would be an advantage. Don't forget your camera and bottled water. This is a brilliant trip, not to be missed. A great price too. You will not be disappointed
This tour is great and definitely worth doing on your trip to Sorrento. The views from the top of Mount Vesuvius are just stunning and worth the trek to the top of the crater. The ride on the 4x4 style buses was a lot of fun and probably the most bumpiest thing that you will ever do!
We had Raffy as our tour guide and she was bubbly, lovely and full of energy.
The tour includes a three course lunch with a lovely selection of wines which you can also purchase after as well and take home as a memento.
We met some lovely people on this trip and it's also good value for money.
Couldn't be happier with this tour. The guide, the 4 wheel drive, Mt Vesuvius, the lunch and the wine tasting. All excellent.
