Trace the footsteps of Lady Mary Crawley on a full-day tour of rural ‘Downton Abbey’ locations from London. Rewind to the early 20th-century Britain portrayed in the hit TV period drama, and tour the Oxfordshire village that doubled as Downton as you hear anecdotes about the series and actors. Plus, visit Highclere Castle, the real-life Downton Abbey, to explore its above-stairs rooms and gardens independently. Highclere admission and round-trip transport included.
  • 9-hour ‘Downton Abbey’ country locations tour from London
  • Travel to the Cotswolds village that doubled as Downton in the hit TV series
  • See the church and buildings used as the village pub, hospital, and home of Matthew Crawley
  • Visit the real-life Downton Abbey of Highclere Castle and explore its rooms independently
  • Hear behind-the-scenes trivia about the actors and making of the series
  • Highclere admission fee and round-trip transportation included
  • Small group of 15 participants or fewer
Make your own way to the meeting point in central London in the morning. Meet your small group of no more than six, and settle into your air-conditioned vehicle with your guide and separate driver.
Then, soak in the views as you head toward Oxfordshire. Along the way, admire the rolling pastures and stone villages of the Cotswolds, the quintessentially English region of hills where much of the award-winning Downton Abbey series was filmed.
Arrive in the charming Cotswolds village that doubled as the fictional Downton, and hop out for a guided tour. Stroll through the pretty lanes to see the church and buildings that served as the village pub, the former home of Matthew Crawley, and Downton Cottage Hospital as your guide shares anecdotes and behind-the-scenes gossip about the much-loved series, and its actors and storylines.
After a bit of free time here, continue to Highclere Castle, the beautiful Jacobean-style mansion that served as the Crawleys’ family home in the drama. On route, learn about the castle’s 1,000-year-old history and intriguing snippets about life ‘above and below stairs.’
On arrival, take in the splendid gardens and turreted exterior of the 19th-century house, and head inside. Enjoy ample time to explore the above-stairs rooms independently using a self-guide information sheet, including the main hall, drawing room, and library. Immerse yourself in the world of the Crawley family as you walk around, building a picture of what real life was like here more than 100 years ago, in the era the series was set.
If you wish, visit the café at Highclere for a light lunch, or perhaps bring a picnic to enjoy in the beautiful grounds.
Afterward, relax on your return journey, ending your tour with a drop-off in central London.

Had a great time .Our Guide Jan was great. He gave us background information on characters on the show which was very insightful. Traveling to Bampton was so wonderful our guide had set photos to refresh our memories of shots of the small town .Great town. The tour allowed enough time to eat and shop still having enough time to tour the castle at your own pace. Had time to enjoy the beautiful grounds. Our driver Ray was so thoughtful so allow us to make restroom stops . Delightful man.

Comfortable, informative and just a great day out of London. Val had so much to offer, even my mom, who had never seen the Downton Abbey series, enjoyed the stories and scenery. The village and castle were delightful!

We thoroughly enjoyed this tour! Our guide, Lottie, was personable and informative, and it was great fun to be with other Downton fans. The day had a nice balance of structured and free time. Highly recommended!

Well described tour and a great driver and tour coordinator. The clips of shows made the entire riding experience enjoyable and caught us up on filming locations.

I was completely disappointed in this tour, it was nothing like I have experienced on other tours. The guide was not friendly, if not down right rude! The tour consist of the guide flipping through a photo album showing you behind the scene photos. This was extremely boring and cheap. My sister asked the guide where the nearest bathroom was, and he told her to wait he would tell her in a few minutes, this is unacceptable! He should have stopped for 30 seconds and pointed her to the nearest toilet, instead once he felt like it he told her of a coffee shop that has toilets, then proceeded to tell her to buy a coffee! I don't think he need to tell her anything other than where to go. Once at the castle, you are on your own. This tour was extremely overpriced for what you get, I would not recommend it.

When they said small group they meant it. Ours was only six and we were in a small van but being small we got to know each other during the trip which was great. During the trip our guide Stewart entertained us with good stories and even a Downton Abbey trivia contest. He played the intro music to the show as we drove into the castle grounds which was cool. We were able to see the main rooms downstairs and upstairs that were used in the show. The main focus in the rooms was on the family that lives there full time. Pictures of their family everywhere as they should be. We had a nice lunch outside and had time to walk the grounds adjacent to the castle. The tour actually started in the town of Bampton which served as the village outside of the castle on the show. There we saw the buildings used as the Hospital, the church where Matthew and Lady Mary were married. This is an old town and it looks just like the show period setting. Overall a tour well worth the cost if you are a Downton Abbey fan.

I have taken a lot of tours over the years and this one was by far the best. Our tour guide and driver were the best! I loved that we got a lot of time to explore each area we stopped at without being rushed. Definitely recommend for any Downton fan!

Our tour started on time at the designated meeting place. Steven, our guide greeted us and showed us to the van, where our driver Jimmy was waiting. The drive is a bit long heading to the first stop however, Steven and Jimmy, along with the other guests made it an enjoyable experience. Steven is very knowledgeable about the tour, and was very friendly and helpful with trivia facts. We felt we had just enough time to leisurely see all that we wanted without feeling rushed. We have to give Jimmy the Outstanding Driver of the Year award for being so very kind in driving back to our hotel to return our wallet which we mistakenly left in the van. We thank you SO MUCH Jimmy, this could have been a really bad situation, we appreciate your kindness.

For the price of a private tour....I was disappointed....the van was uncomfortable...the tour guide was pleasant and informative but expected her to stay with us during the town visit and castle was kinda like we were driven there in a personal vehicle, not a comfortable tour van...and told a few interesting stories then set free to discover for ourselves....I loved what we toured....just disappointed in transportation and guide attentiveness. Not worth the extreme cost....
