80 million years ago, during the cretaceous era, there was a warm shallow ocean here. Deposits from the plants and animals that lived in the ocean are what created the limestone. The limestone, rich in fossils, stretches from Tykarp / Ignaberga to Kristianstad and Bromölla.

The mining for the cretaceous limestone in Ignaberga probably started as early as the 12th century. In the surroundings there are traces of the mining in smaller quarries and partly or completely collapsed mines.

Tykarpsgrottan is the youngest mine and the only one you can visit in the area. Here the farmers started mining in the mid-18th century and ended in 1888.

Several movies have been shot down in the mine. Here, amongst many other places, parts of Astrid Lindgren's Ronja the Robbers daughter were recorded. The old mine acted as the beer cellar in Mattis's castle where Ronja and Birk meet up in secret after being separated by their families.
