Small-Group St Petersburg City Highlights Tour Including Peter and Paul Fortress and Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood

Visit the onion-domed Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood on a St Petersburg highlights tour

Leave your central St Petersburg hotel by air-conditioned vehicle and head into the city’s historical heart.

Hear about St Petersburg’s short but illustrious past from your guide, learning how it was founded in 1703 and served as Russia’s capital through the 18th and 19th centuries, until 1918. Hear how, during this time, the city presided over many seminal events in Russia’s history, including three revolutions.

Head first for St Basil Island, the original hub of the city as planned by its founder, the still-revered Peter the Great. Hop out of your vehicle and stroll to the island’s eastern corner, called the Spit of St Basil Island. Drink in the sweeping city views from here as your guide points out landmarks such as the Palace Embankment, the Winter Palace and the two 18th-century Rostral Columns that still rise from the spit and were built as beacons for passing ships.

Continue to the Peter and Paul Fortress, the oldest building in the city. Discover how the complex was intended to protect against a Swedish invasion that never materialized, and was later used as a political prison.

Visit the Peter and Paul Cathedral inside the walls, and admire the lavish interior, home to the tombs of Peter the Great and Tsar Nicholas II and his family, murdered in 1917.

Drive on to the Nevsky Prospekt, passing the shops and neo-classical residences of this vibrant thoroughfare, and continue into Palace Square, framed by the splendid Winter Palace.

Take snaps of this former residence of the Tsars, before moving on to gold-domed St Isaac’s Cathedral, one of St Petersburg’s most imposing sights.

Admire this imperious church, and then head for the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, known for its onion-shaped domes. Pose for photos here and marvel at the opulent interior as your guide explains how the church stands where Tsar Alexander II was killed in 1881.

After around three hours, finish your tour with a hotel drop-off.

Excellent trip. Thoroughly enjoyed the peter and Paul fortress. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable. We are of an age where we had head of the Tsar and his family. It was nice to see their last resting place.

Our guide Marina was excellent. She would be particularly good with Australian tourists as she spends a lot of time there. She's very knowledgable about St Petersburg, gave us plenty of time and space for our photography.

My guide was perfect. She was very friendly and professional. Very instructive. I was blown away by the mesmerising beauty of Peter and Paul Fortress and The Church of the Spilled blood. I highly recommend this tour. It's not too long and not too short. Just perfect !

Really interesting way to see some of the key sights in SP - also - it's good to know that you do get to go inside the Church of the Spilled Blood - even though that's not clear from the description.

The great part of this tour was that we got decent seats and the show was of course very good. However it was a very rushed tour and we were under the impression that we'd be seeing inside of the other theaters as well but no joy there. It was all drive-by with little or no time for photos or good views. For the price, there should have been a return drop off to our hotel.

I will not use Viator every again. The tour guide was 15 min late picking us up. The van was dirty and smelled of heavy cigarette smoke. The vents did not work in the van and the lone window that was open did not circulate air to the back where I was sitting. It was a hot day and we were roasting in the van without air conditioning. The tour guide had a heavy accent and talked rapidly with the window open and no mic, so it was hard to understand her. When we were touring the sites, she knew her history, but wasn't able to answer additional questions. She was in a hurry to end the tour, and did so exactly on time without making up the 15 minutes she was late. Additionally, the tour stated it starts in your hotel and ends in your hotel, but the driver dropped all of us off in the center of town.
As a side note: I called Viator when I got to Russia to book additional tours. The person I spoke to seemed agitated that I called at almost 4 o'clock and everyone has already gone home.
I will NOT use Viator again.
