Forget going to St Petersburg in the summer when all the other travellers have taken the best hotels and there are people in all your photos. Get there early January, beat the crowds and get the snow capped photos that will impress all your friends.....well that was our reasoning anyhow. Coming from Australia you are not going to find any city covered in snow and the Russians know how to deal with it.
Sure, it was -25 for a couple of days but if you layer up and have good boots it doesn't matter. Our guide knew all the facts and was so nice we also booked her and a driver to take us to the Catherine Palace and a city tour the next day for 5 hours. The workmanship will blow you away and the fact the nazis flattened it and they rebuilt it has to impress everyone. The Amber Room at the Catherine Palace was stolen and never found so they reconstructed a new one, piece by piece as per the original photos !!!
SPECIAL TIP Early Jan is Russian Xmas time, taking a tour gets you in the side door so you don't have to line up in the snow :
Its a must to have a guide take you through this magnificent museum.
We really enjoyed this tour. Very knowledgeable guide. Showing the highlights of the hermitage. Handy helpful tips too. Highly recommend. We went on a Wednesday which meant that we could enjoy rest of day looking around in our own time.
Great! We were picked up by Elena in our hotel and had a nice and informative walk to the museum and then another 2.5 hours there. The museum is huge so it is good to have someone to show you around and tell you interesting stories about the most significant rooms and painting.
Our tour guide was very informative and set the pace of the tour to suit myself
and my grandson. As my grandson is studying history at university, she was able to answer all his questions in depth.
The Hermitage is a wonderful museum which I would recommend to everyone to visit with our tour guide. Thank you.
Amazing-we had the same guide for this tour and the Catherine Palace-Lida-she was brilliant-really interesting, informative and kept the four of us totally engrossed for well over three hours!
We were collected at our hotel at 10am. Our tour guide was Leider, only my husband and myself on the tour. We can't praise Leider enough, her knowledge and professional approach was superb, we spent 3hrs with her, she is a very pleasant and very nice young women, and we felt over lucky to have her for a guide. I would highly recommend both the tour and Leider.
If you get the tour guide Roman, you will get the best tour you've probably ever had. We spent 5 hours in the Hermitage, and an hour walking about the city from our hotel where he met us to the Hermitage. Full of enthusiasm, knowledge and facts. He knows everything about everything in there. Really quite amazing. Can tell he loves the museum, loves the city and loves Russia. Great guide, and the museum is good too!
We were picked up at our hotel at 10AM and had a guided walk thru centrum towards the Hermitage Hotel. I highly qualified guide told us about the buildings we passed.
At Hermitage we were met be another guide that had our entrance-tickets no waiting at all, and had a very nice guided 2h-tour in the Hermitage.
I can highly recommend this - great value for money.
Leider was a very knowledgeable and personable guide. The Hermitage is huge and she was helpful in making it not feel too overwhelming. A very good tour.
Our trip was fantastic the courier named Leader was spot on time and very very good. She was so good we booked a further trip to the Summer Palace for the following day. Again spot on time and very informative. She also arranged our transfer from our hotel to the airport. The taxi arrived 30 mims early which was fantastic. Overall we will certainly recommend you to other people.
Overwhelming experiance, Even a full week would not have been enough.
Our guide was prompt, very friendly and knowledgable. We were the only two on the tour and were treated with some extra attention. Thank you Lida. To see what we saw at the Hermitage in the time would not have been possible without a guide. The only way to go.
The Winter Palace is spectacular. It contains many works of art by some of the most famous painters of the past. The interior rooms are just beautiful and the outside of the buildings are splendid. We loved it all!
There was a bit of a mix up and our tour guide was sent to the wrong hotel but once she turned up we found it very interesting and informative. We had about 2-2.5 hours in the Hermitage which really was enough to get a taste of the place. Our guide showed us the most interesting room and paintings.
Our visit to the Hermitage was excellent we had had a whistle stop tour 2 days before as part of our cruise to St Petersburg so had an impression of the palaces. we asked the guide to take us to areas we hadnt visited and would like to spend more time at. She was very obliging and informative about the exhibits we wanted to see. overall St Petersburg was as expected though it took some time to get our bearings as the first tour had gone round in circles as we later discovered. Everything is within close walking distance once you have your bearings. Finding good restaurants proved a little difficult. However we enjoyed our 4 days there
Only us 4 in the group. Superb guide, Catherine, fantastic museum, which I certainly would not want to attempt without having had a walk through with a guide first. A must.
We felt very privileged to have a personal guide to the hermitage who was excellent, she managed to guide us through the crowds for wonderful exclusive close up views of the pictures, her English was faultless and her knowledge immense
I could not recommend this tour highly enough, terrific value for money
The Hermitage is huge. Our guide was able to get us thru to see the major exhibits and works of art. She certainly knew her way around the buildings. She was knowledgeable on the art and the history of the Hermitage. After the tour, we decided to stay on and continue to explore the museum and even with a map of the building we still needed to ask for directions to find things. I'm so glad we had a guide for the first 3 hrs, who was able to provide us with the maximum exposure to the treasures in the Hermitage.
We got picked up at the hotel and driven to the Winter Palace and we joined another family from South Africa, so there were 6 of us on the tour. The guide, Albina spoke very good English, she lead the tour for a full three hours and provided everyone an opportunity to get souvenirs at the end of the tour prior to leaving. The guide also explained the Palace Square and the buildings around it. Expect large crowds at the Hermitage. I love the small group tours as they provide you with a fuller experience and opportunity to see the exhibits.
The guide was excellent and the masterpieces also. Well organized building and facilities.
A wonderful experience with breath-taking architecture and décor which overshadowed the exhibits.
