What You Can Expect

Bonnet Island Wildlife Cruise from Strahan

Cruise to Bonnet Island

Your tour starts in Strahan, where you’ll hop aboard your boat for the quick cruise to Bonnet Island, which lies near the entrance to Macquerie Harbour. Listen to narration about the island and its resident little penguins, and then disembark on the island for a walk with your guide.

Go in search of the penguins, treading carefully across the island’s rocky shores, accompanied by your guide’s special light that doesn’t disturb the birds. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch sight of the penguins as they waddle to their nests to spend the night after their day of fishing in the sea. Then return to the boat for a gourmet snack of fruit, cheese and beverages while you admire a view of the Bonnet Island lighthouse. Hear stories about lighthouse keepers, who have lived on this secluded island with their families, helping to prevent ships from crashing in treacherous conditions. Your cruise ends with return to Strahan.

Please note: Make sure to wear sturdy, closed-toe walking shoes and warm clothes, such as a hat, gloves, fleece jacket and waterproof outer jacket.

The weather was chilly and cold as it was in winter. The tour was interesting and we managed to observe a few penguins returning home to Bonnet Island. It will be wonderful if there was a toilet facility onboard the boat
