What You Can Expect

Canberra Explorer: Australia's Capital City Tour from Sydney

Australian War Memorial, Canberra

Canberra is located 175 miles (282 km) southwest of Sydney, about a 3-hour drive in your comfortable climate-controlled coach. Start early with morning pickup from select Sydney hotels, then settle in and enjoy the scenery along the route. Your guide provides informative commentary about the sights throughout your tour.

Stop in Berrima to stretch your legs and perhaps purchase morning tea, then pass through Goulburn, one of Australia's premier sheep and wool regions. From the summit of Mt Ainslie, take in sweeping views over the handsome city and its surroundings.

On your full-day tour of the national capital, expect to take a guided tour of the National Museum of Australia and a driving tour to see the Captain Cook Memorial Jet (fountain), National Library of Australia, National Carillon bell tower and Commonwealth Park.

Learn about Australian governance during a private guided tour of Parliament House, which features innovative buildings designed with rooftop gardens and city views. If Parliament is in session, you can view the upper or lower Houses of Parliament.

Drive by The Lodge, which is the official residence of the Prime Minister. Then continue past the High Court of Australia and tree-shaded boulevards where many foreign embassies are located.

Have about an hour to visit the Australian War Memorial, a monumental museum that details Australia’s participation in major 20th-century wars with moving exhibits. You’ll also take in ANZAC Parade, a boulevard built in honor of the ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) troops.

Your coach leaves Canberra in the late afternoon, stopping for a short dinner break during your return drive to Sydney. Your tour ends in the evening when you are returned to your starting point in Sydney around 9pm.

The day was long, but the tour was great! I do not think there is enough to see in Canberra for a dedicated visit of several days there, but it is a must see destination and the day trip I took provided a comprehensive overview of the city. If you are an art buff and want to spend hours at a time gazing at pictures you might want to book several days in the city, but the day long tour from Sydney was sufficient for me when my time in Australia was so limited.

Our tour driver Darryl was very knowledgeable and shared lots of stories of Australia. It made the time fly by on our journey. Our guide Bernie was a treasure find - extremely insightful! Bernie showed us the War Memorial Museum, National Art Gallery, and Parliament. Just a great time! This is a must-see. You will value the history!

I thought the tour was excellent. It's a long day with the travel time but I found even the transfer time entertaining with informative commentary along the way. As an introduction to Canberra, I wasn't disappointed in the slightest. I would recommend this tour to anyone who has a spare day to get out of Sydney and see the nation's capital.

We found this trip to be absolutely fantastic although a little rushed. Perhaps on this trip we could suggest that one chooses if one would like to either go to the art museum or the war memorial but not both, just a suggestion as we really enjoyed this trip.

Excellent tour! Not only you get to know the city's views, but also get entertained with the coach driver who makes the long trip very entertaining.
