What You Can Expect

Opera on Sydney Harbour: Carmen

Opera on Sydney Harbour: Carmen

Make your own way to Handa Opera's stunning waterside venue at Mrs Macquarie's Point, within Sydney's picturesque Royal Botanic Gardens.

Be ready for a breathtaking performance of Bizet's classic opera 'Carmen' – which is set in Spain and acted out on a floating stage with world-class opera singers and the superb Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra providing the music. Admire elaborate set designs that have become a drawcard for this site, even in daylight. Then settle in for an enchanting tale of the sultry Carmen, as powerful voices sing famous Spanish tunes, filling the night air with Spanish rhythms and fiery passion. Soldiers patrol, factory girls seduce shamelessly, glittering bullfighters parade and dancers pirouette their way across the stage as the captivating Carmen walks fearlessly towards a fate written in the cards. Subtitles in English are provided during the show.

You can arrive as early as 5pm to enter the open-air complex. Water taxis provide a stylish ride to the venue, and other public transportation and shuttle buses run regularly (transport at own expense). Food and drinks are available for purchase at the on-site bar and sit-down restaurant, with tables that showcase stunning views of the sunset, and the illuminated Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge.

Have your choice of four seating sections when booking. Dress for the evening's weather conditions and the outdoor venue. The performance runs for a total of approximately 2.5 hours with intermission. Handa Opera promises a memorable evening out in Sydney.

This was the highlight of my trip! The seats in the 2nd row from the stage boasted magnificent views and audio of the Opera, as well as, the harbor with the Opera House as a picturesque background ( the Opera on the Harbor season was in full swing). Opera Turandot was simply superb in its entirety.

This was wonderful. Loved the amazing set, the Sydney Harbour background, and of course the immensely talented cast. Not even a rain shower could dampen everyone's enthusiasm, instead there was much hilarity involved with all the audience donning the free plastic capes. Of course, the cast didn't miss a beat through it all. Highly recommend this event.

one would assume that going to the opera in Sydney Aus. would naturally mean going to the Sydney Opera House; not so, but the best thing is seeing a great opera on the water with a view of both the opera house and the bridge...spectacular experience!
