What You Can Expect

Port Stephens Day Tour with Dolphin Watching, Sandboarding, and Australian Wildlife

Australian Reptile Park
© Viator

Get an early start with a morning pickup from hotels in central Sydney, and then head north in a comfortable climate-controlled coach, leaving the city via Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Stop at the Australian Reptile Park, located about an hour outside of Sydney. Walk through informative displays that showcase a variety of species, including Australian native animals, such as Tasmanian devils, platypus, wallabies, and wombats.

After approximately 45 minutes at the park, continue your scenic drive to Port Stephens, stopping in Nelson Bay where you have about one hour on your own for lunch (own expense) before taking your afternoon dolphin cruise.

Enjoy a 1.5-hour afternoon dolphin-watching cruise that takes you directly to the best spots for sighting wild bottlenose dolphins. Learn about these playful creatures from your onboard guide, and enjoy fantastic views of the Tomaree and Yacaaba headlands as well. Your cruise also provides complimentary tea, coffee, and biscuits.

Back on land, a 4WD-vehicle picks you up for an adventure at the Stockton Bight Sand Dunes. Ride off-road around the expansive landscape of dunes, which are part of Australia's biggest sand dune system, with some measuring more than 100 feet (30m) tall. You can also try sandboarding down the dunes.

Spend about one hour at the sand dunes, then reboard your coach for your return drive to Sydney. Arrive back at your hotel around 7 p.m.

This tour was very fun and you definitely get your money's worth. The park you go to is the Featherdale Wildlife Park. Included in this tour is a koala encounter, where you can pet and take photos with koalas in small groups. Here you can also feed and pet kangaroos, but watch out for the ostriches, they'll try to steal the food from you! The group is pretty large, so try to get to the koalas first, or you'll end up waiting in line for a long time, and then the kangaroos will be full and less interested when you feed them. The sandboarding was really fun as well. It is like sledding in the sand, and you have beautiful views of the coast and the dunes. Do expect to be with a large group for the day, and combine with other tours for the sand dunes. The crowds won't stop you from having a great experience though. Another tip: make sure to get a spot at the front of the boat for dolphin watching. This is where most of the dolphins will come up close to the boat, but it will get crowded once the dolphins appear, so go there as soon as you're on board to get the best view.

Great tour, got more than what we expected. The dolphin cruise was amazing, gotta see a few of them while on cruise. We also enjoyed the thrilling sand-boarding experience! Btw, the fish and chips @ Port Stephens is also very good! Lively and interesting commentary from our experienced coach driver, John.

the zoo was incredible with kangaroo snakes insects and usual ozies animals, but it was really great for the reptiles and arachnees compared to other wild life park we did visit in autralia then. and we wish to have spent more time in the zoo.,the dolphin was here in the water, but we hardly can see them, just shadows in the sea
the guide driver was incredible, he really gave a lot of informations during the trip. i believed i was the only one interested on his stories but it was really great
