What You Can Expect

Sydney Taronga Zoo's Australian Animals Tour

Taronga Zoo's five new Asian Elephants

Make your way across Sydney Harbour, then select one of two complimentary transport options — shuttle bus or Sky Safari cable car— to reach the zoo's main entrance, which is located at the top of the hill. The cable car flies above the animal enclosures, giving you a sneak preview of Asian elephants, big apes and other critters down below.

A zoo guide meets you at the designated time to start your 1.5-hour Australian Animals tour. Walking around the grounds with a zoo guide, you'll learn first-hand about the animals and zoo operations. Find out detailed information about the kangaroo, wallaby, echidna, koala, Australian birds and more during your tour, which also explores a replica of a sandstone gorge that is typical of those found in the Blue Mountains. Remember to bring your camera for great photo ops with the critters.

Get the VIP treatment as you visit off-limits areas of the zoo and enjoy face-to-fur interactions with the animals. Since your small-group numbers have a maximum of eight participants, you'll have an intimate and personalized experience with a knowledgeable zoo guide showing you around the zoo and its inner core. It's the perfect tour for animal lovers!

After your guided tour, enjoy the rest of the day to explore the zoo at your leisure. If you have worked up an appetite, there are several restaurant and cafe options available, with sit-down or casual dining choices that you can choose. Taronga Zoo also has many picnic areas. You are welcome to bring your own picnic to enjoy while soaking in spectacular views that overlook Sydney Harbour.

Absolutely amazing tour. We were the only 2 people on the tour and we had 2 fabulous tour guides with us so we could ask plenty of questions and got to go in to the koala paddock just us 2 and the tour guides which was amazing to get that close to the koalas and we could take lots of photos. We went behind the scenes and in the kitchens which was really interesting and got to feed the wallaby that was not on display. The tour guide offered to take plenty of photos on our phone so we have many memories of the tour. The tour is 1.5 hours to 2 hours but we were shown around 3 hours and then they walked us over to get an encounter and photo with the owl as were running short of time and they didn't want us to miss it. The 2 tour guides were lovely ladies and told us many amazing things.

This tour was amazing for many reasons: First off, our tour guides Pat and Annette were the best! Their love for the animals/birds was palpable. They provided fascinating information about the creatures we saw. It's the best education one can have. Secondly, we came up close to koalas, kangaroos, wallabys, and other animals/birds. Feeding a wallaby while it rested its paws on my knees was one of those special moments. We were taken to areas closed to the general public in order to get a closer view and sometimes touch the animals. Thirdly, Pat and Annette gave us time to observe and take our photos. They were so patient with us. They did not watch the clock and stayed with us longer than planned. And finally, the zoo itself is beautiful. The scenery from the cable car is spectacular. It flies over the zoo so one can see the animals below, as well as the Sydney skyline and harbor. This is a must for one visiting Sydney.

We thoroughly enjoyed this tour. Our guides Carolyn and Barbara were both knowledgeable and helpful. If you are going to the zoo, which you should of you are in Sydney, this tour is a bargain.

The weather was bad just before, so I was the only one on the tour. The personal attention was awesome.

One of the highlights of my trip to Sydney was this tour. It was fantastic! This was a great opportunity to learn more about the unique Australian animals and get a closer look at them--and I do mean a closer look! On this tour you get a lot of one-on-one time with various animals which is great for photos and videos. And the behind the scenes views of how the zoo operates makes you really appreciate everything zoos do to better the lives of animals in their care. I can't recommend this enough for those who want to know more about Australian animals!

loved this tour. yes we are Australian and we saw Australian animals.. but we loved it ESPECIALLY the close up contact with animals we rarely see like platypus and echidna. we got to go behind the scenes and see an animal kitchen and sit with an echidna. That was awesome. well worth the money and time.

The private tour of the zoo was the best. Jane was the best tour guide. The close up behind the scenes of the zoo was amazing.

We ate lunch just prior to starting the tour. Lunch was purchased right in front of the building where we were to start our tour. We ate out doorsweather was fine then! with the gorgeous scenery right in front of us.Tom was our tour guide and he was very informative and interesting! He gave us lots of behind the scenes experience. We got to feed a wallaby, and even pet a koala! There were only 4 in our group and Tom answered each question and made sure we got the most from the experience. It rained the whole time but that didn't stop Tom nor us as we followed him gladly every step of the way. The whole group would highly recommend this tour for adults and children altho the 4 of us were all adults.
