What You Can Expect

Pingxi and Jiufen Day Trip From Taipei with Sky Lantern Experience

The spectacular Golden Waterfall

Start your day trip to Jiufen and Pingxi with hotel pickup in Taipei, and settle into luxurious comfort aboard your vehicle. Driving along Taiwan’s northern coast, your guide makes a scenic stop for postcard views of the two-toned Yin-Yang Sea. Visit the Golden Waterfall, where the water's yellowish hue is formed from copper and iron deposits from old mines. Take in amazing views of the ocean and surrounding landscapes while getting taught about the area’s history from a local man who worked in Jinguashi’s mining industry for over 60 years.

On arrival in historical Jiufen, stroll the narrow, cobbled streets and learn about the town's inspiration for films such as the Oscar-winning animation Spirited Away. Bring your own lunch or purchase a meal at a local eatery, followed by a relaxing stop at a teahouse (own expense).
In Pingxi District, follow your guide on foot down Shifen Old Street, lined with shops selling miniature sky lanterns. Whether or not you arrive for the Sky Lantern Festival, when up to 200,000 luminous lanterns are released into the sky, you’ll have the opportunity to make your own rice paper lantern and write wishes on it (one lantern per 4 participants), light a candle at its base and watch it take flight.

After the decline of the mining industry, the area these three towns are located in was revived as a popular tourist attraction and a center of history and culture. Just a stone’s throw away from bustling Taipei, this tour will allow you to bask in the old-town atmosphere, take in beautiful scenery, and learn a thing or two about the area’s cultural heritage and you’ll transfer to your vehicle for the return drive to your hotel.

We only had two full days in Taipei and we took this tour on our first day. We're glad we did - we were able to fully experience and enjoy the Taiwan countryside with the tour's well-planned itinerary and capable tour guide and driver. On our second day, we just made our way to the Taipei 101 area and just got lost among the shops, restaurants and attractions. And by late afternoon, we just walked to the Lin Jiang night market. Our Taiwan experience was complete!
If you only have enough time to take just one guided tour in Taipei, this is it!

Very good day spent outside of Taipei with an excellent guide, Phoebe. Good command of English. Does not scrimp on time.

Had a great time with a tour that turned out to be more personalized than originally supposed to be. Zoe and Claire were both super awesome and had lots of tidbits and facts to share with us the entire time. Jiufen was a really pretty town with lots to eat and see. If you've ever seen Spirited Away, you'll recognize it right away. It was super quaint and cute! The sky lantern experience was also a really cool experience that I would highly recommend. We got to make our own lanterns and write our wishes down and release them into the sky. Overall, a really great experience that was super fun!

It's our first time in Taipei and this is really a nice tour outside the city. We were picked-up from our AirBnB home so it was a big plus. Our tour guide Amanda has lots of things to share about the places we went, and even took beautiful pictures for our group. She brought us to a very nice and quiet lunch place with beautiful view. And of course the highlight was making sky lanterns from scratch. Highly recommended!

My daytrip to Jiufen and Pingxi was excellent! The tour guide, Jett, was professional, knowledgeable, and friendly. It was a very rainy weekday, so Jiufen was less crowded than usual, creating a much better atmosphere for us to explore slowly. The family-run lantern shop in Pingxi was also a nice stop. Even in the rain, the lanterns worked and flew off. I recommend doing this tour over trying to navigate these sites alone--I think you'd need a car.

Our guide, VIvian, was organized, was like a mother hen getting us ponchos so we would enjoy the day in the narrow streets, watching out for us, giving suggestions as to where to eat, helping with our lanterns and even taking photos of the big event. Couldn't have asked for a better experience...not to mention the setting off of the lanterns was very exciting!

Our tour guide Ken was amazing. He spoke very good English. He was very accommodating and knew a lot about Taiwan’s history. He gave us enough time to explore and eat during lunch time. Would highly recommend this tour.
