What You Can Expect

Pingxi and Jiufen Day Trip From Taipei with Sky Lantern Experience

Pingxi Day Trip From Taipei: Old Pingxi Railway Line and Sky Lantern Experience

Start your day trip to Jiufen and Pingxi with hotel pickup in Taipei, and settle into luxurious comfort aboard your vehicle. Driving along Taiwan’s northern coast, your guide makes a scenic stop for postcard views of the two-toned Yin-Yang Sea. Visit the Golden Waterfall, where the water's yellowish hue is formed from copper and iron deposits from old mines. Take in amazing views of the ocean and surrounding landscapes while getting taught about the area’s history from a local man who worked in Jinguashi’s mining industry for over 60 years.

On arrival in historical Jiufen, stroll the narrow, cobbled streets and learn about the town's inspiration for films such as the Oscar-winning animation Spirited Away. Bring your own lunch or purchase a meal at a local eatery, followed by a relaxing stop at a teahouse (own expense).
In Pingxi District, follow your guide on foot down Shifen Old Street, lined with shops selling miniature sky lanterns. Whether or not you arrive for the Sky Lantern Festival, when up to 200,000 luminous lanterns are released into the sky, you’ll have the opportunity to make your own rice paper lantern and write wishes on it (one lantern per 2 participants), light a candle at its base and watch it take flight.

After the decline of the mining industry, the area these three towns are located in was revived as a popular tourist attraction and a center of history and culture. Just a stone’s throw away from bustling Taipei, this tour will allow you to bask in the old-town atmosphere, take in beautiful scenery, and learn a thing or two about the area’s cultural heritage and you’ll transfer to your vehicle for the return drive to your hotel.

Our guide, VIvian, was organized, was like a mother hen getting us ponchos so we would enjoy the day in the narrow streets, watching out for us, giving suggestions as to where to eat, helping with our lanterns and even taking photos of the big event. Couldn't have asked for a better experience...not to mention the setting off of the lanterns was very exciting!

Our tour guide Amanda gave us very nice suggestions. The Jiufen town is antique with yum food. The waterfall is grand and the experience with Sky Lanterns in Pingxi is amazing. Highly recommended.

I loved the small group tour. It was a unique experience and highly recommended. Our guide, Victoria, was really nice and accommodating. She even brought her camera to take photos of our group. It was really beneficial to us because my family doesn't take great pictures. She was also very patient with our pace, specifically me carrying a 30 lbs toddler.

The tour requires a lot of walking. I don't mind the walk however, there was one lady in the group who complained about walking on the side streets and not getting picked up where we were dropped off. They weren't wearing comfortable walking shoes. In addition, her mother had bad knees and a slow walker. She even called the driver lazy uncalled for for not picking us up at the exact exit of Jiufen. Although the reminder e-mail mentioned about wearing comfortable walking shoes, maybe viator or the booking agency should also get the tourists to sign off on the level of activity easy, moderate, hard. In that way, they can decide whether they can take the tour. Just my two cents.

All places we went are amazing, able to land me a lot of cultural and historical background of this place. Jessica is very adorable and passionate, giving us chances to explore places that few people have been to.

My first time booking via Viator. Very glad I did cos I am happy with an English speaking guide in Taiwan. It's not easy not knowing Chinese in Taiwan, but tour guide Claire is very good and efficient in translating and explaining things along the way. Our driver Tom was efficient and safe driver ! Credits to both of them.

Really enjoyed Pingxi where we learn to make our own sky lantern. Hope our wishes be true !

Jiufen is definitely worth the trip. Despite being crowded, there are so many snacks to buy and try. Would have preferred a little more free time to walk and see things. I wouldn't recommend having meals in the teahouse. The service in the teahouse was slow and majority of our time was waiting for our food to be served....so wasted our precious time in Jiufen.

Overall , will definitely consider Viator for my other free and easy travels.

So much fun! Our tour guide, Jessica, was so helpful and informative. She was very sweet, always offering to take pictures for us, very patient, never made us feel rushed, and spoke great English. The entire day was full of great scenic sites and learning more about culture and traditions. Though it's difficult to narrow down the day to one favorite activity, I would have to say creating and flying the sky lantern was my favorite part of the day...but that's a tough call, because I enjoyed every single stop. I actually slipped and fell and sprained my ankle during one of the morning stops, and still refused to give up on the day. I limped around all day, and the group was very patient with me and my slow pace and even though I was injured and in considerable pain, it ended up being one of my favorite days in Taiwan. Would highly recommend this tour!
