What You Can Expect

Tauranga Shore Excursion: Lord of the Rings Hobbiton Movie Set Tour Including Rotorua Sightseeing

Lady Knox Geyser, Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley

Start your full-day shore excursion to Middle-earth and Rotorua with pickup from the Tauranga cruise port. Your coach follows a scenic route, crossing the Tauranga Harbour Bridge before departing the Bay of Plenty. After climbing the Kaimai mountain range, note the fertile farmlands of Waikato as you near the town of Matamata and the filming site used for the Hobbiton Movie Set.

Stroll with your guide past hobbit holes belonging to the likes of Bilbo and Frodo during a 2-hour tour of The Shire, an actual New Zealand sheep farm. You’ll recognize scenes from The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogies, including the party tree, the Mill and the Green Dragon Inn, where you can finish your Hobbiton tour with a mug of beer, cider or ginger beer (own expense).

Back on board the bus, continue into Rotorua via the Mamaku mountain range. After a stop for lunch (own expense) beside Lake Rotorua, you’re treated to a traditional welcome into the authentic Maori village of Whakarewarewa.

Accompanied by a Maori guide, witness the astounding thermal activity of Rotorua’s bubbling hot springs and mud pools, and watch Pohutu Geyser erupt. Learn how New Zealand’s indigenous people made use of the region, bathing in the hot springs and cooking over steam vents.

Step foot inside Whare Tupuna, a Maori meeting house designed with symbolic wood carvings. Hear songs, see dances and discover Maori customs during a demonstration of warlike fighting skills included in the haka dance.

Your driver takes a separate route on the return trip and, if time allows, stops for an impromptu photo shoot in a redwood forest. You can use provided hats, cloaks, staffs and swords to pose as Gandalf or your favorite hobbit from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit before drop-off at the cruise port.

Worry-free Shore Excursion:We will ensure your timely return to the Tauranga port for this activity. In the rare event your ship has departed, we will arrange for transportation to the next port-of call. If your ship is delayed and you are unable to attend this activity, your money will be refunded. Fantastic tour! Our tour guide Philip was amazing, going the extra mile to ensure we saw all the interesting things in the areas visited and sharing his knowledge along the way. Was great to see both locations as we were only in port for 1 day. Some very unique sights at Rotorua and Hobbiton is beautiful, you wouldn't even need to be a Lord of the Rings fan to enjoy it. I highly recommend this tour.

What a fantastic day we had ... we had a small bus with a cosy group of 14 which made it very friendly and Shona was a very helpful and happy guide. The highlights were numerous but I will say that Hobiton astounded me as it was so much more than I expected. Then Rotorua was amazing too. It was a tight timetable to fit everything in and yet we didn't feel we missed anything and the lunch was superb. Thanks so much for a wonderful day.

Cruising on the Ovation of the Seas on December 29, 2017 from Sydney to New Zealand, I booked a tour for our party of 19 to visit the Hobbiton Movie Set and Rotorua Sightseeing Tour, departing from Tauranga. Even though our ship was 2 hours late in docking than was scheduled, we were met in the rain by the lovely Shona. From there it was was straight to the Maori village of Whakarnewarewa where we were educated and entertained with the customs of the Maori people. With a visit to the geysers include at the site it was a great experience. With a lovely drive with fantastic commentary to the Lord of the Rings Hobbiton Movie Set next, we were a little rushed to meet our 1pm tour, but having made it, our tour guide Caleb did a wonderful job taking us sound the set. Even those in our party who hadn’t seen the movies or even read the books were enthralled. It even stopped raining! We all enjoyed a beverage at the end of the tour at the Green Dragon and enjoyed a little frivolity dressing up as Gandalf and a hobbit. One other plus was the snack pack provided to each of us on the bus-much appreciated. We even had time at the end of the day for a tour around the township at the dock which was terrific. Many thanks also to Aria L at Viator Group Bookings who helped me with the co-ordination of our tour from the other side of the world.

What a fantastic tour ,we had a wonderful tour guide a small group tour in mnii van with an 18 month old we were provided a car seat for her, mother who is 84 and walks with aid of walking frame easily was able to manage the whole movie set was steep in places but we had beautiful weather im sure if it had been wet she would of had trouble.Hobiton did not disapoint our expectations after seeing photos of the movie set but exceeded them scenery was awesome, guide very informative and even if you have never seen Lord of Rings and Hobbit movies you would still enjoy this tour .At end of tour you are given complementary beer ,cider or gingerbeer .Then onto Rotorua where we had time to purchase our lunch then tour the geysers, hot mud pools and learn from the guides all about this amazing place. We were treated to a traditional Maroi welcome and Show which was enjoyed by all.Another highly recommended tour.

Best tour of our visit to New Zealand. Small group tour well organized and guide most informative for the total tour. He had local knowledge and made the visits most enjoyable despite the morning rain to the geysers/Maori show at Te Puia .geyser.

Just received this review request from Viator today. We went on this tour almost 3 months ago! Anyway, our guide was great but I forgot his name as it was so long ago. Tour is as expected. Hobitton sells itself. Pretty commercialized, prices in the gift shop ! Rip off!!!
We did not expect lunch but we did partake . We also did not expect the non-Hobitton part of the tour to be so good great even.
Totally worth every penny.

This was a great excursion. It's easy for me to say that because I am a Hobbit and Lord of the Rings fanatic! It was everything I hoped it would be. Hobbiton / the Shire was exactly what I was hoping for - and it felt a little magical being there. I was totally impressed with how they managed to keep so many people moving through and still let each group feel not too rushed or crowded. They've set it all up brilliantly. The ginger beer at the Green Dragon was fantastic. We don't drink alcohol so we were really glad to see a non-alcoholic beverage available that was delicious and refreshing. The visit afterwards to Rotorua was delightful and interesting. Be ready to walk a LOT for this excursion and don't forget hats and sun screen. They had umbrellas available but we didn't need them. The countryside was beautiful as well. We were very impressed too with the company that took us around. Our little bus was having some power issues that the driver commented on but no worries, he called and they sent a new bus to take us back. All in all, this was my favorite day on our trip.

This tour was one of the best we have ever done. First off our tour guide was Grant and he was awesome. Our first destination of the geyser and mud springs at Rotorua started with a show from the Maori Poeple in their highly ornate wood carved meeting house. This show was very entertaining with excellent singing and dancing and lasted about an hour. Next we visited the geyser which was spouting pretty good and saw the surrounding thermal mud springs. This was very interesting but not nearly as spectacular as Lassen or Yellowstone National Parks in the States. After this we had lunch which included chicken and salmon with was smoked in a barrel. Lunch was excellent with the salmon being the best tasting we had ever had, it still makes my mouth water thinking about it. After lunch they took us to a dark building where we got a up close look at a Kiwi bird they are nocturnal. We next traveled to Hobbiton which is the village set for the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies. This tour was very complete showing so much of the village seen in the movies. There must have been at least 25 buildings built into the hills which gave us excellent picture opportunities. Even before the movie set was built there you could see how beautiful the ranch was. I think I got over 100 pictures by the time I was done.
